Lad, the BEST way to end its misery is to gouge and then slash at the fat upper baggy region just below its tubular sphincter...prepare for a lengthy clean-up... it eets haggis
This beautiful song reminds me of just before Mel Gibson kicks Archibald Cunningham's ass in the duel. Or, maybe just before Jessica Lange gets boffed by a non-husband character, for the umpteenth time in the moovee...
hey is there any books you can recommend for learning the pipes i live in Newfoundland (the most Irish place outside of Ireland) and I don't think there are any teachers around so if i were to pick it up I would be on my own
Heather Clarke's New Approach to Uilleann Piping is a great book and it comes with a CD. The teaching videos from na piobaire uilleann are worthwhile as well. Remember, this is an aural tradition, so learning by ear, not books is the best way to go. And having other pipers to help you is recommended. Where in the province are you based? I wouldn't be surprised if there are pipers near you.
@pinkfloydn1fan i agree with legertymusic its better to learn by ear and get tips from other pipers on things like ornamentation and good piping is all about ornamentation it would help if you had previous experience with a tin whistle too i tried once to teach someone who had no experience and it was a nightmare and as said before i am sure there must be piper near you if the japanese have them they must be everywhere and good luck with learning i hope you have lots of fun
@LunasCraincloud everyone here is an irish descendant. and the culture is very similar still. look up some pictures you ll be surprised how similar it looks
Uilleann pipes are based around D ("concert pitch") or in "flat-pitch" sets which range from C#, C, B and occasionally down to Bb. A would be extremely low and very long for a chanter and probably be extremely hard to play. I don't know that anyone has ever built a set in A. You can play in A major on the concert pitch pipes if you have a G# key. Alternately get a set of Scottish smallpipes or Scottish border pipes in A. Much smaller range, though.
ha...thanx for the answer, i was asking this a while back when i didnt know music theory and though the only way to get certain pitches was to tune down, im not so arrogant anymore so...NOW, i can write basically anything i want, but thank you for your reply, im thinking about picking this shit up though, i play 7 instruments, whats another? lol
Hey Guitarman....there's a piper in Derry, N.Ireland (who is also a sargeant in Irish Army/ who could help you. His name ids Gaybrial Fitzgerard...check him out.....(Good piper but a total alcoholic bollox)
love these pipes... most people dont know that literally like 80% of the bagpipes they hear in movies and music that are portrayed as Great Highlands are actually these, wonderful sound, as a GH piper i am so jealous of it haha
I have been playing the Highland Pipes for some time now...about 6 years. I am very competitive. I would like to step it down a notch and learn the Uilleann pipes. The fingering looks different. I heard there is a chanter out there for the Uilleann pipes. I think I might buy one soon and get a jump start.
I have a friend with two of Bruce's full sets, a D and a B. Very nice sets, great quality. The B chanter is especially sweet. Are you planning to order a new set? Because I believe his current lead time is around two years for a full set.
His current lead time is about a year and two months or so for a full set.
I've got save up for a year or two to make the $6000 I need for his set - I'm just a teenager and my family doesn't have much money, so I'm going to get a part time job at a restaurant or my vet's office and work the maximum number of hours per week - that should give me enough. Then, I'll just start the long wait ! :) I love the pipes enough. The two-three years needed will go by in a blink of the eye. I love the pipes.
hey pal, i finally got a practice set. My uncle had a spare set sitting around and old set from the 60's. He got them from an Irish piper he knew when he had bagpiping competitions over in Irland and so he sent them for me for nothing. Whats the best way to start when learning yourself ill see if i can get a video let ya see them and hear them to. let me know that would be great... thanks
that was freakin rad. i got some scottish pipes for christmas last year but havent been able to play cuz im in the service.. its kind of a pain to read and learn out of a book. but yea that was rad!
Thanks, Mordred. The uilleann pipes have 8 holes on the chanter but as they are a dry air source they can be overblown giving two octaves (slightly more on some chanters) plus metal keys for a fully chromatic range.
Hi Nightwish, I am 26, so thanks for the compliment;) I have been playing off and on for around 10 years. If you need any advice on finding a set or playing, please feel free to drop me an e-mail. Good luck!
Absolutely beautiful. I love the uilleann pipes. I play highland pipes myself, but I have considered taking up uilleanns. May I ask where you got your set?
My set is a hybrid set of drones and chanter by Kirk Lynch of Weston, MO and regulators by Tim Britton of Iowa. I got the various parts over the years from several different folks.
hey Zac great playing, nice touch w/the regulators. Can u tell me why my chanter sounds like a saxaphone when i pump the bellows. is it the reed. thanx. Tom
omg music from heaven! I love those pipes they have such a...not ring....like a singing rythm to them I just adore them! if I ever have an oportunity to learn to play them I will! Loved it!
Great playing Jerry. You must have invested a great deal of time in mastering these pipes! Fine to know that the youth is keeping the Irish Traditional music alive and kicking.
Thank you! I really need to get the pipes up and running well again so I can post some better piping videos. Many thanks for all the encouragement folks.
yes you do!! you have a huge tallent for playing these! if you made a CD I would probibly be first or second in line to buy one! Wonderfully done! And just....WOW... loved it!
Oh yea, and hats off. I've been trying to learn the tin whistle and I've lost two of them all ready. Maybe if they wern't so cheap I wouldn't lose them or maybe I'm just a jack ass. Probably the latter. later.
You outlaw. I want to be an outlaw. Where do I get lessons! ha ha. That is awesome man. I wonder how much a good set costs. Probably around $2000 huh?
Coo-ee. Well done. I'm rather jealous though, those drones give you a quite symphonic sound. Whenever I practice the fiddle it sounds horrid 'til I get a few mates in to round it out.
Wow. Your Stubbert's has something weird going on with the drone, but solid! And the second tune is AWESOME. Keep it up and good for you for passing on Jerry Holland info.
Excellent playing. Good, lively, tempo. People speak of the fiddle as being a hard instrument to play but it looks as though you need an extra set of hands to play the u-pipes. Good stuffl.
"The problem with the u-pipes is that they are so complicated and demand so much effort, the REST of your life becomes the hobby!;) "
Isn't that the truth! I play the Great Highland, Borders, and Uilleann pipes among other instruments. Haven't had an opportunity to try the Northumberland Bellows pipes, but need another set like a hole in the head.
Most people start with a practice set (chanter, bag, and bellows) and work up to a fullset (add three drones and three regulators). For a good, new practice set, you are looking at about $1,200-$1,500. A good, new fullset will put you back about $5,000-$7,000. Word of advice: Never buy a cheap, plastic practice set with plastic reeds. Ever.
haha yeah, i just read up about them, pretty intense i must say (and i thought my pipes were hard lol) anyways keep up the good work, I would love to see a "Zac Leger" CD come out!
this track is a literal example of the vast impact the great man that is Jerry has made on the world. Supreb playing... honorable tribute... and my profound thanx.
It's a Kirk Lynch set with Tim Britton regulators (the reeds of which are barely working at the moment so that's why the reg playing on this video is so crappy; only about three keys currently work;)
Kurt Lynch is due to send me a D half set anytime in the next few months (18 months have elapsed since ordering). I am playing a Brad Angus B set now.
My father, Jerry Holland is currently watching this video and is over-whelmed with all the support and wants to thank you. Jerry is now home, recovering. He did NOT go for Amputation after all, but they did remove the SECONDARY source of cancer from his Knee, and currently taking treatments. A Youtube Broadcast will be posted this week or early next week directly from Jerry himself.
Hi guys. Thanks for the comments. Last I heard, I had gotten a note from Jerry saying the amputation would occur sometime last week. If that has changed, that would be wonderful news. If anyone has heard anything new, please let me know, and please continue to spread the word and prayers for Jerry!
Yeah! It's great that you are bringing awareness to Jerry's situation. We are going to Cape Breton this summer and hope that he'll be better soon. Jerry Holland is an icon of Cape Breton fiddle and a great human being!
Hi, it's great that you're doing this! Last I heard was that Jerry's leg did not have be taken, but that he is still in hospital undergoing lots of tests. We are on Vancouver Island and we LOVE Jerry! :) We are praying he will make a full and speedy recovery! :)
Wherrrrre's yer feckin piper's apron??? Great job, looks like a dressing room backstage in some sort of park show??? Hope your well, got my pipes back from Nick, had a few little issues, all's well now. Call me sometime, love to hear from ye!

Great piping, Zac, good to see you in action. Thanks for the message about Jerry, Im passing along your video, to Sigean folks and our friends in the Tri-Cities and Knoxville,
Thank you for this...not only the music, but your message about Jerry and bringing awareness to it. He's one of the greats, and my wishes go out to him. It's great to see the community rallying around him and doing what they can to help him. Thank you.
Wonderful ! you are a great musician !

14752147521 2 years ago
A decent practice set is probably your best bet. Depends on your budget.
Legertymusic 2 years ago
hey whats the difference beetween a half uilliann set and a full?
14752147521 2 years ago
A half set is chanter, bag, bellows and drones. A 3/4 set adds tenor and baritone regulators and a full set adds a bass reg.
