The fact is Athanasius was very dark and very short. His enemies called him The Black Dwarf. There are icons of this great man in which he is shown properly but more commonly he is shows as European. Yes, it's racist but racism is historically and cross culturally the normal way of looking at things.
I do find it annoying that most images of him are totally inaccurate but you can't change the past.
The Egyptians were part of the conquest of Alexander the Great. The rulers of Egypt were predominantly Greek- sons of the descendants of of Alexander's children and their armies. He would be light skinned.
@mkristu - that's a very common thing to see in religious paintings. The painter chooses features that appeal to his audience. That's why so many of the paintings of Christ look European even though Christ was Middle Eastern. Same thing with St. Athanasius - although he was Egyptian and should look more Middle Eastern as well, the artists chose to present him with European features.
@apostleshipofprayer the funny thing is that in africa that paintingis still a white man so the christian who hasnt done their research would never know that there was one called the "black dwarf" who saved Christianity. Jesus is painted white too and most of my people now say that is a white man's God. the question is that how can that be solved?
Respond to this video... @apostleshipofprayer i agree that its ok to contextualize things like that but i would think the truth needs to be told to the african people that Christianity didnt just come to them from Europe it came from Africa to Europe 1st since Alexandria was the centre of education. that will motivate African Theologians to rise up and realise that they have a heritage and a voice in the church today. he was called the "black dwar
Africans are not all black. Athanasius was an Egyptian, and their descendants the Copts - who have not intermarried with Arabs or anyone else for 2000 years, are not black and some of them look 'white' even.

Athanasius was not called "the black dwarf." Making up lies for black racism is still racism.
