  • @Cougar545x39 dude, Chieftain was expected to be used pretty defensively. Line up on a hill, fire a few rounds as the sovs approach, back up and repeat, similar to a Tiger.

  • @redreaper2020 Well, if people learned anything about tank warfare in WWII, then it is that a tank needs good mobility. A battle tank is an offensive vehicle in the first place. For defence you rather use AT-teams with light AT-equipment (and some light vehicles).

  • @Cougar545x39 Well, we expected to have hordes of soviet tanks and infantry coming at us in waves, according to their doctrine and our own. We needed something very heavily armored and able to make short, effective counterattacks. The US M60 and the Chieftain were both very well armored and able to shoot at long range while hull-down, as well as make short, brutal counterattacks to retake any lost ground.

  • @redreaper2020 Agree, but you have to admit, that the tank could use at least another 400hp. With only ca. 14hp/t the tank is not agile enough. And when the enemy got a lot more tanks, you need to move fast to get out of pockets. When we look at the leopard 1 with nearly 20hp/t it becomes obvious. To win tank battles, good first hit probability and good mobility is more important than armour. Russians and germans understood that better, as they experienced a lot more big scale tank battles.

  • @Cougar545x39 Centurion was like 11hp/t. Rolling resistance, steering efficiency, and engine powerbands are more important than just pure horsepower.

    Also, Leopard 1, like the AMX-30, had no real armor. 80mm frontal armor is insufficient against anything more than autocannons; the 2A42 could punch holes in it and the 2A46 popped it like a toy. AMX30s (which are very similar to the Leo1) fared about 1:2 against T-55s, where Abrams went ~1:300+

  • @Cougar545x39 mobility is important in offensive operations, but we expected WW3 to be mostly defensive until the end, bleeding the Russians dry until we had a decisive advantage. I'd agree that it's important, but this is also in light of experience of WW2, where the allies were often undergunned, and because we had estimated Soviet armor as being much better than it actually was.

    Also chieftain had a big advantage: even at 14hp/t, its steering was regenerative--better engine power use

  • @scottishrailways Hiya, yer, this was a lucky catch - an amazing thing to see. Unfortunately, due to my kackhandedness I missed the best bit where the entire tank disappeared in a cloud of diesel fumes. Not every day you get to see a bit of tank-clag!

  • @scottishrailways For those uniniciated 4B means that this is the tank of the D Squadron, Second in Commands tank, A Captain in rank. Usually an upper class wanker who could not fight his way out of a paper bag!

  • @janandrobin nah mate, nothing to do with the engine. That was just a first class example of how NOT to drive a Chieftain. To see how they should be driven see my vid '4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards'.

  • @Hanglands As an ex-chieftain crewman it saddens me deeply that such a great piece of kit is in the hands of such a knobhead driving that tank. The whole point of Chieftain was it's ability to blow away all opposition on the move with special APDS ammunition. What you see on this film clip was a special beast being paraded around and tormented in my view! like an animal at the Royal Show!

  • @Zapata935 As being ex R.E.M.E as an A mech with 4RTR in the Eighties i spent all my time on Chieftain and I comply completely to your Comments, this Chieftain doesnt sound all too good towards the end of the Video. It was an awesome sound, loved those things. Apparently the Exhaust system was speicifically designed to produce this sound for the scare factor ( Phsychological warfare )

  • @Stewatyou Alright mate, I was in 1RTR. I've watched this vid a few times and from a Dvr Mechs point of view, I'd love to batter the driver for his outrageous gear changing. Poor tank.
