  • Great video but the singer needs to leave Merle to Merle. He tries to hard on the lows (if it doesn't come natural, you're never gonna hit the note) and the worst part is; you can actually hear the yankee in his voice. Put a lil twang in it son!

  • for you beadles,outlaws

  • what a voice.........fantastic.....

  • listen and you will here the bass played thru out the song

  • Hey Matthew, It still sounds great !! I finally did something , check out youtube, type in Hoyt Patterson. I hope you like, Hoyt

  • Good job my friend

  • Great Job. Merle would be proud. Thanks Hoyt

  • Exellelent cover,i,m sure Merle would like it ,

  • what happened to peoples word being there bond great song *******************s

  • Nostalgia ain't what it used to be....

  • This is one of the best recordings (postings) I have ever heard! This is awesome and says sit back and let Merle wrestle with the song center of your brain. 5 *****

  • Could anyone confirm for me that the lowdown bass note at 3:05 (and other places) is in fact a bowed string bass through an octave shifter - or whatever they call it? Merle's own live recording of this not too long ago has the same very rich low note.

  • Good question. Here in my version...it is simply a keyboard brass sample at the appropriate low note. I thought it came closest. I can't tell you what Merle's producer used on the original cut.

  • I suspect your version is correct. Whatever, it adds a lot to a finely rendered vocal. Aloha.

  • sounds like a trombone to me

  • @olmusiclover The low note you hear is a bass trombone

  • great re-mix cant do many people really do ole haggards songs..

    good job!!!

  • good voice make another one GREAT ONE

  • lets get big HHHHEEELLLL YEA ,we need to just get along,, quiqt wasting good energy for the bad

  • Get well soon Merle,we love you.

  • Haggard and Buck made country music a place where you cpuld hear some hard living guys tell you the truth about life..We were damn lucky to have them sharing those songs with us..it made my life easier somehow

could have gone back to the hotel and smoked with Merle!!!!!

Thats why I always have weed now...

  • really pass the bong

  • What you guys aren't doing is seeing out of your eyes, not watching the news and don't know what good times really are! And I really do appreciate the language you use. You eat out of that same mouth? Kiss your mother with that same mouth? I have seen more wars than I care too. Get some time behind your belt before you go talking about something you know nothing about! Punks!

  • great job keep it going strong. IT'S JUST US AMERICANS.

  • Good job!!!!!

  • great voice- equal to the task

    wonderful sound and great song

  • great job i love this song!

  • before microwave ovens when a girl could still cook, and still would. amen to that!

  • Nice job by Shelly.

  • Excellent cover by Matthew Shelly. I think he breathed some fresh air and, dusted off, a previously unanswered Masterpeace by Merle.

  • This guy sounds pretty good, but he's no Merle Haggard.

  • MY IDOL..AND FAVOURITE

  • can you tell me the link for the song "always wanting you" from this singer

  • Your voice reminds me of a very young Kris Kristofferson.

  • That`s not Merle Haggard singing.

Not a bad cover, but definitely NOT the Hag.

  • Thank you! Hadn't heard this song in over 20 yrs.. Couldn't remember exactly how it went. You did a great job.

  • I'm looking for Naturaly High with Merle and Janie Fricke. Does anyone know where I can get a copy?

  • LONG live the voice of true country music .Thanks Merle

  • I haven't heard anyone who can sing it exactly like Merle, but you do an excellent job. Keep up the good work! :)

  • hey this is no easy song to cover and that was a beautiful rendition! ya done "the Hag"proud laddie 5/5

  • Look idiots, I am VERY liberal. And Merle is Definitely against Iraq. He has said repeatedly that he wrote "Okie" when he was young and stupid. But lets use his own words to defend his views. "Let's get out of Iraq, get us back on track, and lets rebuild America First!"

  • Singincowboy

A few day's ago the NY Times ran a article that we might actually be winning the war. My husband has been there and he says we are winning the war. The only place we are loosing the war is with the Liberal Press because the stories are written by Arabs.

  • Here's the thing

    WE WON THE WAR.

    We lost the peace

  • i like very much. he's right.

  • Good video man, I prefer Merle singing it but still good job.

  • "before microwave ovens, when a girl could still cook and still would" awesome!

  • this song sucks

  • then u don't know good music when u hear it!

  • This mother fucker sings like Mr. Rogers!! I was raised on this music and fuck all of you who don't appreciate it! I even appreciate this school teacher sounding fuck singing it!!

  • you fucking asshole its Haggard get it right. And ever herd of Okie From Muskogee you dumb mother fucker. Just because you're a traitor doesn't mean you can just go and label people as unpatriotic you fucking prick

  • These back and forth comments are america. problem? only time will tell.

  • merle IS against the current malfunction of a gov't, (iraq, bush, & any other catastrophe therin) and i think his anthems would stand well today if any of the "current crap "country" music stations would get real & play some real music.

i love merle's new anti-war song. it rocks, & i wish it was played far & wide.

"are the good times really over" is a GREAT song & literally, and inadvertantly, a theme song of these times...

  • merle haggard a truel legend of the working man

  • One - Haggard, not Harrard.

Two - He's from California, not the South.

Three - "Okie From Muskogee" (the predominant anti-hippie anthem) and "Fighting Side of Me" (threatening violence against anyone who insulted America) were two of his most famous songs.

    Very informed opinion otherwise, though.

*gives the silly Lib a pat on the head*

  • this song is a classic and it hits home

  • Good Cover. Sounds a bit like Haggard. "C"

  • Merle haggard has produced a song that is second to the national anthem--Right on to the greatest country singer in history-The hag has done it all for 40 years-None of these clowns singing today cant last 10 years-All country music needs is a young Merle Haggard to come along today and get this trash called country music back on the right track.

  • Thats not the Hag. Its good But its not Haggard singing. "C"

  • Hey dumbass (the person who left this comment) Its Haggard, not Harrard. Merle is more American than you will ever be you Liberal. He would be proud of this video. Good job to who made it. My wife is Haggards 2nd cousin, and I know he would like it. So think about what Being American really is, and leave your dumb comments to yourself.

  • Im not sayin he wouldnt be proud of it, but I think Hag is against the Iraq war.
