So Zebtoonz, I am a 8th grader and when I grow up I want to become some type of artist having to do with the animation business, I have used a Intous4 Tablet (which was wonderful , until I lost it >.< ) and Since I am going to be saving up my own money for a device (my old tablet was a VERY generous gift from my parents and some type of my-money-when-I-turn-21 thing) Would you recommend me to save up for the BIG Cintiq like top notch pro so I'll start out with the "best" or a lesser $ version?
@DallasGreen123 That may be true, on the other hand I understand that the guarantee does not cover replacing the screen should it get scratched. If I did have some other problem with it I'd simply peel off the film, clean it up, send it in and no one would ever know there had been a protective film on it. Aside from that, the thing that bothers me is that Wacom sells a $999 product that scratches with normal use.
I see you are a user of this product im wondering if i can get your thoughts on the prouduct? I plan you buying one soon. Sence your a user you can shed some light on my purchase by giving me the pros and cons. Thank you for your time. Keith My email is kweldon@email.itt-tech.edu you can reach me there as well
@chuckkles22 I previously used an Intuos2 for several years so changing to a Cintiq was an improvement for me. It cut my production time considerably and I have been very happy with it. The biggest drawback was the small screen. After working on a 19" monitor, it took some getting used to. But overall, I have liked it and am just waiting for enough money to invest in the larger model Cintiq.
I have a 12WX as well. just be careful that you dont have a ring on when using the cintiq as your hand rests on the display surface and you can end up scratching the screen. a smudgeguard is recommended if youre working long hours on it.
@mechaart Thanks! I don't have any rings on my drawing hand (right) and I use a smudge guard glove. But scratches are no longer a problem with the Photodon screen protector. I only wish I had put one on the first day I got my tablet.
@Zebtoonz I also might add that I have the smudgeguard 2 and well I dont know how they are guarding against smudges when my hand sweats and passes through it to the tablet. is a smudgeguard supposed to be like that cause I thought it was "Perfect"
@mechaart Well, the glove doesn't prevent smudges--there are plenty created as you draw--but I hardly notice it. I clean off the screen every once in awhile with the cleaning stuff you can get from Photodon. The main thing is that you're not scratching the actual tablet screen which, if you do, means you feel them as you pass over each scratch while drawing.
@Zebtoonz ok. though I spoke to a representative at Wacom about a screen protector and they said not to put one on or it will void your 2 yr warranty (has to due with the glue of the screen protector sticking tightly to the lcd screen and can mess it up if you peel it off).
though is the photodon Wacom approved?
Ill go check out this photodon cleaner, cause I just use a damp microfiber cloth to clean myne after every use and dry it off with air or a fan (or let it dry off alone).
@mechaart I have no idea if Photodon is approved by Wacom. The bottom line is their screen scratches easily and is not covered in the warranty, so you've got to do something.
@HDaviator Seriously? Well, it was either that or having to live with a bunch of scratches on their scratch proof screen which, by the way, is NOT covered in the warranty. Really, I do not understand why Wacom doesn't provide a better screen when the price tag certainly warrants the very best materials.
@catha86 Nibs are fine! I'm still using the same one for a year now. The problem I had was with scratches on the screen. I did a search on YouTube to find a good screen protector and found the best one is the Photodon Crystal Clear made specifically for the 12WX. It works absolutely wonderfully! Your hand glides over the screen and no more scratches. If the film ever gets a scratch, get a new one for under $20. If I had it to do over again, as soon as I bought my tablet I'd put one on.
@catha86 I'd say I spend about 3 hours per day on my tablet. The rest of the time is doing rough pencil sketches on paper, animation and other work. Plus I usually don't use the pressure sensitivity features of the tablet so much as I use Xara's stroke shapes instead to get thick and thin lines.
@Zebtoonz thank you! you helped me a lot. I think I will buy the tablet. but after the summer though. hopefully Noteslate or ipad or something will be as good so I get more feature for the same price.
@catha86 You're welcome! If you're interested in an ipad, take a look at the blog thedennisjones.wordpress(dot)com. He uses one to do art. Quite impressive!
Zeb, thanks for the review. I would love to see more reviews, possibly on some of the software you use, which really help those of us just getting started.
@saprissa9 Yeah, it's happened to me too. There are some settings you can do to make it better. Check out the user manual under Troubleshooting/VGA problems and there is some counsel regarding flickering or ripples.
Bidon45, I'm not so sure I understand your comment that Wacom tablets aren't optimized for programs like Xara? I've used them for several years with Xara and they work just great together.
This was very informative, thanks for taking the time to do it. YouTube needs more of these "process" reviews and less of the self-indulgent speed paintings.

consider that the guarantee vanishes as soon as you put a protection film onto it

If the tablet has become unusable due to the scratches call Wacom and they should be able to replace the screen. It is merely glued on.

Is it portable towhere you can draw on it and hook it up to the computer later or does it have to be hooked to the computer to work?

@Penciltamer It has to be connected to a computer in order to work.
