Hi Clem, I really enjoy this piece you are playing. My wife bought me a sitar. Your work with Magic Carpet helped inspired me to play the instrument. What a great album! I hope my local record shop up here in Cleveland, Ohio starts to carry the second Magic Carpet album. Thanks alot and take care. Jason.
Wonderful Clem- I just listened to your Ahir Bhairav- You are one of the greatest sitar players ever who is seldom heard- I'm still studying your book five years on now.... your meends are to live for and your deep soul for the Ragas of India is what I suspect all we sitar students strive for... I could listen to this 24/7 easy... bless you for posting and bless you Clem.... brilliant....
Dear Clemda - very sweet beautiful touch. Our world is a better place with your music. your playing is an inspiration to me. Your have done your guru proud. Love and blessings!
Thanks a lot for this posting...if i wasn't seeing you at your room, i'd easily think atht you are an indian sitarist hahaha... I don't know you, but hearing this beautiful rendering of Charukeshi, full of pathos, i am sure you had a great sitar Guru.. Keep on posting, please..God bless you..
Hi Clem- I have your book as well- what a great book it is!!... love the Charukeshi- you are great inspiration for all of us.... many Blessings- Namaste
Raga Charukeshi is a south Indian (Karntik) Raga that has been adopted into north Indian Raga Sangeet.
The ascending and decending is the same 7 notes that is Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha kommal (flat) and Ni kommal.
The first half of the scale is Bilawal and second half like Bhairavi.
if you take C as tonic then it is C D E F G A flat B flat. It is difficult to place a time on it as the time system is not so pronounced in the south but I usually play it evening. It has a very distinct character.
Hi ! I tried so hard to find the Samay for this Raag. The time of the day, the season. What specific time ? what are the Komal notes called in Western Notation, please ?
Um, excuse me? So anybody who plays sitar is a hippy socialist? What crap. Typical stereotyping asshole. This man is actually very skilled, much more so than you probably. So shut your hole.
Am I hearing Pt Nikhil Banerjee?. His style is more similar to the late Pandit Nikhil. Very beautiful. Post more clips of him please. Bravo!!!! 10 out of 10. Keep up the good work. Very soothing. heavenly music
In my reply to FretlessSix I did say that the western scale is evenly tempered as fixed by the piano but Raga sangeet is not. However there is approximation as ragha88 states. The western scale however does not catch the auti Kommal Re of Raga Marwa or the Kommal Ghandar or Darbari. The shruti (microtonal) link between notes is also not present in western music.
the temperament on western music is the same as indian music. We do have simalar scales to western music but much more.Bilawal or shankarabaram indian scales are equivalent to the major scale and keerwani is equvilent to minor scale.
I've never even laid my hands on a sitar before so what i say may be quite obvious to you people who know how to play it: so how does it work? do you play a lead and pluck all the other strings open?
I'm curious as to what tune set tonic and number of tarafs you have on your sitar. I'd like to try this tonic. Would you know the western notes they're tuned to?I'd be interested to try this tonic.
Awesome playing! I've heard a lot about you from Manjit. Hope we can hook up at some point and have a jam - electric gtr and sitar will make a great combination...
I have a Hiren Roy, too. How come my playing doesn't sound as beautiful as yours does? Did you teach yourself or with a teacher? Anyway, I'll keep practising...
I studied with late Pandit Sachindra Nath Saha, principal of the Midnapore Music College W. Bengal, India in 1968 and until his death about two years back.
Lovely, Clem! xx

Hello Clem - I have your book that I bought back in 2007.
Are you still giving recitals around UK.
It is so refreshing to hear a sitarya of your calibre. Your riyaz is at least 2 candles worth according to Late Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib.
Keep on playing. I enjoy your style.
