I played a festival years ago in Logan Oh. Don was also there,he came on behind our group. He seen the banjo I was playing and wanted to see it.He invited me to come to his bus after his show. What a kind and humble man,sat and talked with him for about an hour. That is something I have never forgotten. Not only a kick ass musician, but also a great person.
Great video! Don Reno was as good as it gets on banjo --he was just as much of a trail blazer as Scruggs ( why try to say who is "best" that's just opinion). All the Reno brothers are great pickers like dad but Dale is something else. The sound he is getting out of mandolin is amazing -- first I thought it was a Boseman F5 but I wondering did he have a Loar ? But color not exactly right? Another thing look at the difference in height on those Reno boys -- amazing! I miss Don Reno!
I've heard about Don Reno almost since I started banjo about 8 months ago,but this is the first time I've heard him play...Guess I should have been more on top of it, because that single string style is some of the most off-beat, enjoyable banjo I've heard yet.
