@GregStir The hatred of Americans is not irrational. You are statistically less intelligent as a nation, you are statistically more obeise as a nation and statistics also show that you are a bunch of fuck-wits.
@ChanelBankierPerry It's hilarious to me that you misspelled "obese" in your tirade, yet you criticize Americans for not being intelligent. And, the Jaguar was going straight down the crapper until Ford turned it around.
@ChanelBankierPerry Not a very extensive, or even witty response. But what else would I expect? The only thing New Zealand ever exported was the scenery from The Lord of the Rings.

@jmhale25 Lol, I've never heard any British person use the word "transmission", I don't know how much Top Gear you watch but they refer to it as a gear box. You've been watching too many American movies, it's not good for you.
@ThePyramis So few of us drive stick shifts that its sort of become a novelty. (Not saying we need videos like this though, lol) If you were to go to a car lot in my area, maybe only about 1 in 75 cars is a stick shift. Its difficult to find a car with a manual transmission in the US, even if you really want one. It took me forever to find mine and they had to send it in from way out of town.
@brainburrito Wow really?! I had no idea. Manual is the only way to drive, it makes driving more fun, you have more control of the vehicle. Saying that, with todays vehicles having abs etc, it actually makes it abit easier as you dont have to slow the car down by shifting down anymore. You can be in 5th, stop, then change to first, so I really hope America embrasses manual transmission!
@ThePyramis I agree. My first car was an automatic and it was so sluggish accelerating and sluggish going up hills that it was an actual safety hazard. Not to mention it had all kinds of expensive transmission problems. Now I have a dinky korean economy car with a smaller engine but since its a manual, it accelerates better, gets better gas mileage and is more fun to drive AND more reliable.
@brainburrito Where the hell do you live? Saying it's difficult to find a manual transmission car in the US is ridiculous. Yeah 4 out of 5 cars sold in the US are autos, but that 20% of manuals is still a LOT of cars. Furthermore, the cars worth having a manual trans; the WRX's, the mazdas, anything small and quick; they're usually pretty easy to find with a manual. I live in Vermont; New England might be the outlier, but most kids at my high school drive stick.
@eskimo810 I live between two autoparks in the San Francisco bay area. I am ensconced in dealerships. A few months ago when I went around looking for a car I would step right on the lot and ask if they had any manuals. The dozen or so dealerships I visited each had 0 - 2 manuals. When I settled on a car, they had to drive it in from 70 miles out of town. I'd say high schoolers are more likely to drive manuals since it's their first car, so it's going to be something old and cheap.

@eskimo810 I am not sure about the "4 out of 5 cars sold" statistic. I would speculate that saying "4 out of 5 cars sold" is not the same as saying "4 out of 5 cars". My car is a manual and has been sold 4 times, my dad's car is an manual and has been sold twice, my mom's is an auto and has been sold once. Between the three of us, 6 out of 7 cars sold is a manual. Manuals tend to be older so maybe each manual has been sold more times on average than each auto. Just guessing though. :)

Hi, would somebody be so kind to answer me a little question? In Germany it is standard to get your drivers license on a manual transmission. If you get the license on an automatic transmission you are not allowed to drive "manuals".
Whats is it like in the USA? are you allowed to drive a "manual" on public roads without having made your license on one?
@DarkRefrain Yes, I am originally from germany so I feel your pain on such confusion sometimes!
In america a standard license covers both automatic and manual, in fact, even owners of manual transmission cars tend to take the test with automatic cars just so it can be a simpler test.
Hey this is random, but I got a 94 nissan sentra with a 2.0 swap, its missing a 3rd gear . . . can I just replace the synchromesh for the 3rd gear or do I have to replace the tranny ?
I would rather push a manual than drive an auto. Well, not really, but I won't buy an auto. Only manual for me. Also I think it does have a lot to do with laziness, but also the fact that almost anything but a semi is rare with a manual transmission. I think everyone should learn to drive a manual or stay off the road. Teach them in drivers ed, that would be better than talking about motorcycle safety, besides, what are you going to ride? A Hondamatic?
We don't drive manuals in America not because of laziness but because it's rare to find any car that isn't a sports car or heavy duty pickup truck that has a manual. We've been off the manual transmission for a while
Now and it sounds like you guys are the lazy ones. Too lazy to put automatics in ur cars. And anyway who the he'll wants a manual when u can have a manumatic.
automatic uses way too much fuel. i dont ever wanna have auto overtake my command...
"too lazy to put in auto" GOD DAMN your another example of nobrainers. i hope u use auto else u will crash cause of the effort it takes for you to put in the gears
Clutch wear only occurs when going from a standstill start (or if you ride the clutch) and there is no wear while the vehicle is moving if you change gears correctly.
The clutches he shows all appear to have a little life in them, even the last one has a way to go before the rivets are flush with the friction surface. The 260z probably has a tallish first gear and if you want to get away fast it probably wants a bit of revs.... this will wear the clutch faster than a relatively torquey engine and a low first gear being accelerated gently.... this is hardly rocket science. If you have a fast car you don't want to spoil the fun by worrying about clutch wear.
I have rarely driven automatic transmission cars, my last two manual cars both had their original clutches at 120,000+ miles when they were traded in, these cars both spent a lot of time in London traffic which is very much stop start. My current car has done a little over 40,000 miles in the first year, I expect the clutch to last for the 3 or 4 years I will have the car. I do know of a youngster who ruined a clutch in under 2000 miles in a turbo nutter version of my car.
@taxmonkey123@taxmonkey123 Well, it depends what you are doing with it. For someone who is really into drag racing, they will probably go with an automatic, seeing as you cannot "out-shift" an automatic. However, there are a few 8 second cars with manual transmissions. Manuals can be more fun on the street, because a stalled automatic is worthless unless its stalled up off the line. But, that's just my 2 cents. I drive an 06 GTO... T-56!!
@taxmonkey123 I don't know, I'd say only the fearful. It's not good to learn how to drive a standard on a 2010 v8 Camaro. That's scary lol. Not only are you afraid of ruining the clutch, but wow that car has some serious tork.
clutches wear out wether your an expert driver or some clueless moron, the only factor that you have control over is the actual length of clutchlife depending on your driving habits and conditions such as steep hills
another fail from expert village... worn out clutches are a result of clutch slippage. to simply say too much gas totals a clutch is a useless statement...
@dougaholic Sure power shifting isn't great on clutches. But a clutch and flywheel that are meant for it are going to be ok. Clutches get worn out over time and the biggest thing that kills them off are fast activations. Yes that happens from power shifting but it also comes from inexperienced drivers who aren't smooth with their shifts. I see 1-2 shifts where the whole car jumps all the time and it's hilarious.
Oh it's so cool to eat/be on the phone while driving, because the responsibility of moving a 2 tonne potential killing machine is definately not enough, lets increase that chance very cool indeed.
@dougaholic wow don't us Australians lazy lol have a bit of national pride the correct term is laid back we worked hard to get the whole laid back thing going dont ruin it by telling them what we're really like lol. Going by population percentages heaps more Aussies know how to drive manual than Americans I been there noone knows how to do it.
its totally because we are real men in europe I think :D
No, just kidding, I like both but manual transmission gives you more freedome while driving a sportscar. In a Escalade or a S-Class you need comfort so you go with the auto transmission... thats it thats all.
@dougaholic todays automatic transmition have 5 or 6 gears sequential, but oldest had like 3 or 4 so in fact it didnt save fuel altought is more confortable to drive in city with automatic, but I still prefer manual is like the way I learn to brush my teeth :D. Aussies like Madmax are cool!
@CharlyFiasco but like every highway has high speed limits, your lucky to go 120 kmph in America so manual isnt as fun because you never use all your gears
@CharlyFiasco EUROPE IS BADAZZ... I live in the U.S.A. & i say majority of us are lazy azzez but i drive manual trans. I just sold my car which was manual & i been looking for a nice car. i find them but they are automatic. IT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS!!!!!!!! >:/ i will never buy an automatic!!!
@delsultano south america too, only stupid lazy americans, they cant shift and bite on their hamburger at the same time thats why most cars driven in america are auto!
Man, what the fuck are you talking about... London, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Barcelona, Berlin... and so on... big cities with lots of traffic , and I mean *LOTS*, during peak hours... and a vast majority of people drive manual. Get your facts.
@alfonsmc And what about stop and accelerate on every corner in the avenues and boulevards? U never lived nor been to states before, because u wouldn't put such a comparison between driving in U.S. major cities and Europes.
Sure, I've just come back from the RSNA congress (Chicago) tree weeks ago. For that matter, I find no difference between driving in Chicago and a major city in Europe. Do you really think you don't stop and go on every corner in Europe when traffic is high? In fact, it can be actually quite easier in the USA where you have plenty of infrastructure "car-oriented" such big highways and wide streets. In Europe, you can get in the middle of bus, bicycle, tram lanes...
yes depending on you gear ratios like my truck has 4 gears but you only use 1st for pulling i use 2nd and 3rd for city driveing and over drive for high way if im going over 50 my truck also happens to have the wrong gear shifter knob its supposed to say low 1st 2nd over drive OD
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well obviously you dont know jack shit about gearboxes, you can easily start in 2 if you want, doesnt matter, i dont even know what you mean with ''pressure on the gearbox'' because thats just fucking stupid
Yes you technically can start in second, but you never need to. Also for newbies it is better to start in first because its such a low ratio, they are less likely so stall.
Yes you can do that, but you wont have take off power! This should be done only if you want to avoid spinning the wheels on slippery road for example.
yup.. you can also start a manual tranny car even if its battery is dead just by pushing it... you're f@#$ed if your battery dies on an auto tranny... haha :P
im irish and i grew up using a manual and i think if americans grew up using 1 they would find it easy to use a manual aswell and be able to do all the normal eatin and on the phone things while driving and i have drivin both manual and auto cars and i prefer manual simply because i like drivin fast and manual is way better for doing so espeically on the roads we have here and i have had many cars and i have never ever gone true a gear box but the auto i had the gearbox went within a year
One problem about AUTO is that they tend to have this "jerk" each time it shifts. Its more worst during the up-shifts than the down-shifts. Does the current-generation of auto transmission have this fixed?
Does anyone here know of, or has anyone heard of an elderly person buying a manual transmission vehicle? I love Manual transmissions. I dont think Ive ever seen an older person driving one. Maybe in Europe?
maybe I was fueled by this guy not knowing what he is looking at. I am 29yo and have been a.s.e. certified transmission mechanic. Manuals DO have more control than an auto, but you have more to control. My personals are Full Manual VBs which are essentaly what youd find in an indy or latest Acura
Not only am I a certified trasmission mechanic, I am also a trucker. So, if there is ANYBODY who knows anything about transmissions, its me. Im not going to waste my time defending myself to you.
What are you, a 16yo? Manuals suck to drive across town. They also provide more breakage and lunging. My built auto provides as much more control than your manual. IF you even have a car.
You can tell you actually know nothing... what a shame, another retard bites the dust you idiot... manuel will ALWAYS be better than auto, theres no discussion about it... everyone knows already...
Not every vehicle would benefit from a manual gear box. Can you imaging a soccer mom trying to talk on her cell phone, drink her coffee, shut up the kids and be trying to shift!?!?! It's bad enough as it is. I agree manuals are nice for playing, but even the Lamborgini has an Automatic mode on the newer models for when you're not racing.
why the hell should she drive, drink coffee and answer her cell phone at one time?
1) in our country using phone while driving is prohibited (i understand it) except the hands-free device
2) i have never driven while eating or drinking and i think its dangerous enough to not doing it
3) my mother managed to shut up me and my sister while driving to school or kindergarten, on old car (was about 15 years ago), with manual transmission
They do all of this while driving because they are generally work-a-holics. I'm not saying it's smart or right to do it. I was only making a point that enough people have trouble keeping out of wrecks with autos without having to worry about clutching and shifting. Also an automatic transmission, is always going to be less harsh on the drivetrain no matter how good of a driver you are, and you won't need to replace the clutch after 50,000 - 70,000 miles.
if most people (except america) managed to drive manual gearbox until now, they will manage to do it in the future
if auto or manual is less harsh it depends only on your skill,
and yes, you have to replace the clutch (if driving normally about 100,000km) BUT you have to replace brakes more often, because with auto you cant brake with engine (which saves the brakes a lot!!) probably theyll last twice as long
and even DSG gearbox (the one with 2 clutches) can shift more promptly and confortably than manual, BUT (again) cannot undergear very promptly which is usually necessary when need to go faster (when overtaking (? the right word?) someone)
i think everyone would benefit from it, when youre using manual, you can undergear (brake with engine), you are changing gear more promptly and also saving fuel... you can undergear when want to have more power faster and so on
i prefer the concept that all drivers around have enough control under their vehicle, not just racing drivers. manual gear with classic clutch provides as much control as car can
Personally I prefer and drive a car with a manual transmission, but as I have stated before some people just would not be able to handle it. There are applications in which automatics accel and there are others where manuals accel.
what does he mean by "using too much gas and not enough clutch" ?? does that unclude going full throttle at lower rpm ?

DarkRefrain 1 year ago
@DarkRefrain You can drive whatever you want in America, regardless of what you took the License test with.
83turbo280zx 1 year ago
@83turbo280zx Thanks for the quick answer!
DarkRefrain 1 year ago
@DarkRefrain Yes, I am originally from germany so I feel your pain on such confusion sometimes!
In america a standard license covers both automatic and manual, in fact, even owners of manual transmission cars tend to take the test with automatic cars just so it can be a simpler test.

ThatFenix 1 year ago
We don't drive manuals in America not because of laziness but because it's rare to find any car that isn't a sports car or heavy duty pickup truck that has a manual. We've been off the manual transmission for a while
Now and it sounds like you guys are the lazy ones. Too lazy to put automatics in ur cars. And anyway who the he'll wants a manual when u can have a manumatic.
xzadious 1 year ago
@xzadious dont talk bull...............
automatic uses way too much fuel. i dont ever wanna have auto overtake my command...
"too lazy to put in auto" GOD DAMN your another example of nobrainers. i hope u use auto else u will crash cause of the effort it takes for you to put in the gears
MrTiti 1 year ago 2
Clutch wear only occurs when going from a standstill start (or if you ride the clutch) and there is no wear while the vehicle is moving if you change gears correctly.

This teaches you nothing about how to drive a stick shift car. You should entitle the video: "what a clutch looks like when you use it too much"
ThaBR33D 1 year ago 4
The clutches he shows all appear to have a little life in them, even the last one has a way to go before the rivets are flush with the friction surface. The 260z probably has a tallish first gear and if you want to get away fast it probably wants a bit of revs.... this will wear the clutch faster than a relatively torquey engine and a low first gear being accelerated gently.... this is hardly rocket science. If you have a fast car you don't want to spoil the fun by worrying about clutch wear.
g0fvt 1 year ago
I have rarely driven automatic transmission cars, my last two manual cars both had their original clutches at 120,000+ miles when they were traded in, these cars both spent a lot of time in London traffic which is very much stop start. My current car has done a little over 40,000 miles in the first year, I expect the clutch to last for the 3 or 4 years I will have the car. I do know of a youngster who ruined a clutch in under 2000 miles in a turbo nutter version of my car.

taxmonkey123 1 year ago
@taxmonkey123 @taxmonkey123 Well, it depends what you are doing with it. T-56!!
caseboyed 1 year ago
@taxmonkey123 I don't know, I'd say only the fearful. It's not good to learn how to drive a standard on a 2010 v8 Camaro. That's scary lol. Not only are you afraid of ruining the clutch, but wow that car has some serious tork.
Spritizzle 1 year ago
clutches wear out wether your an expert driver or some clueless moron, the only factor that you have control over is the actual length of clutchlife depending on your driving habits and conditions such as steep hills
reap62 1 year ago 3
another fail from expert village... worn out clutches are a result of clutch slippage. to simply say too much gas totals a clutch is a useless statement...
DaBluedude100 1 year ago
@DaBluedude100 he might have meant too much acceleration when releasing the clutch, that's sure to do some damage.
dougaholic 1 year ago
@dougaholic Sure power shifting isn't great on clutches. But a clutch and flywheel that are meant for it are going to be ok. Clutches get worn out over time and the biggest thing that kills them off are fast activations. Yes that happens from power shifting but it also comes from inexperienced drivers who aren't smooth with their shifts. I see 1-2 shifts where the whole car jumps all the time and it's hilarious.
DaBluedude100 1 year ago
a worn clutch also happens from 20 years of use or when its old! DUH what an expert!

No, just kidding, I like both but manual transmission gives you more freedome while driving a sportscar. In a Escalade or a S-Class you need comfort so you go with the auto transmission... thats it thats all.
TeamChicken 1 year ago
@dougaholic todays automatic transmition have 5 or 6 gears sequential, but oldest had like 3 or 4 so in fact it didnt save fuel altought is more confortable to drive in city with automatic, but I still prefer manual is like the way I learn to brush my teeth :D. Aussies like Madmax are cool!

@alfonsmc And what about stop and accelerate on every corner in the avenues and boulevards? U never lived nor been to states before, because u wouldn't put such a comparison between driving in U.S. major cities and Europes.
DjMoTowNakaMikey 1 year ago
@DjMoTowNakaMikey

Yes you technically can start in second, but you never need to. Also for newbies it is better to start in first because its such a low ratio, they are less likely so stall.
retsnom92 2 years ago
Yes you can do that, but you wont have take off power! This should be done only if you want to avoid spinning the wheels on slippery road for example.

shortie0shaun 2 years ago 2
One problem about AUTO is that they tend to have this "jerk" each time it shifts. Its more worst during the up-shifts than the down-shifts. Does the current-generation of auto transmission have this fixed?
212809 2 years ago

maybe I was fueled by this guy not knowing what he is looking at. I am 29yo and have been a.s.e. certified transmission mechanic. Manuals DO have more control than an auto, but you have more to control. My personals are Full Manual VBs which are essentaly what youd find in an indy or latest Acura

Not every vehicle would benefit from a manual gear box. Can you imaging a soccer mom trying to talk on her cell phone, drink her coffee, shut up the kids and be trying to shift!?!?! It's bad enough as it is. I agree manuals are nice for playing, but even the Lamborgini has an Automatic mode on the newer models for when you're not racing.
roadtrip1098 2 years ago
why the hell should she drive, drink coffee and answer her cell phone at one time?
1) in our country using phone while driving is prohibited (i understand it) except the hands-free device
2) i have never driven while eating or drinking and i think its dangerous enough to not doing it
3) my mother managed to shut up me and my sister while driving to school or kindergarten, on old car (was about 15 years ago), with manual transmission
people are more and more lazy
Kokosiak1 2 years ago 3
They do all of this while driving because they are generally work-a-holics. I'm not saying it's smart or right to do it. I was only making a point that enough people have trouble keeping out of wrecks with autos without having to worry about clutching and shifting. Also an automatic transmission, is always going to be less harsh on the drivetrain no matter how good of a driver you are, and you won't need to replace the clutch after 50,000 - 70,000 miles.
roadtrip1098 2 years ago
i wouldnt project cars for stupid work-a-holics
if most people (except america) managed to drive manual gearbox until now, they will manage to do it in the future
if auto or manual is less harsh it depends only on your skill,
and yes, you have to replace the clutch (if driving normally about 100,000km) BUT you have to replace brakes more often, because with auto you cant brake with engine (which saves the brakes a lot!!) probably theyll last twice as long
Kokosiak1 2 years ago 2
and even DSG gearbox (the one with 2 clutches) can shift more promptly and confortably than manual, BUT (again) cannot undergear very promptly which is usually necessary when need to go faster (when overtaking (? the right word?) someone)
Kokosiak1 2 years ago
@Kokosiak1
btw DSG is based on the conventional manual principles.
It is two automated manual transmission with two clutches, in one housing.
And yes, in some situations DSG can jerk as well...
kapufa 1 year ago
i think everyone would benefit from it, when youre using manual, you can undergear (brake with engine), you are changing gear more promptly and also saving fuel... you can undergear when want to have more power faster and so on
i prefer the concept that all drivers around have enough control under their vehicle, not just racing drivers. manual gear with classic clutch provides as much control as car can
Kokosiak1 2 years ago
Personally I prefer and drive a car with a manual transmission, but as I have stated before some people just would not be able to handle it. There are applications in which automatics accel and there are others where manuals accel.
