@SunsetSix Yeah Right ! Blacks & Whites got along GREAT during this period in Time ? Racism was Rampant & the Norm during the 40's. Dorothy Dandridge wasnt even ALLOWED to eat or Sleep where Whites were Allowed ! It was against the Law for a NEGRO to drink water from a WHITES ONLY Water Fountain ! Black Servicemen were being Lynched & Burned in the South JUST FOR WEARING THE UNIFORM ! Who was it that gave you such a great insight into race relations during the 1940"s ?
@SunsetSix Most whites back then treat blacks terribly! Blacks were separated from whites, treated like 3rd class citizens, and portraited badly in films! I enjoy music and films of the 40s too but if it's one thing I hate (and hope and pray never returns) back then is the mindless, senseless racism that was rampant!
@MarvelettesDude2 yea, it's from the movie," Orchestra wives" in 1942. It pops up on TCM once in awhile. If you like the performance, you will probably enjoy the rest of the movie too.
@RennyGd Actually, this is from Glenn Miller's first movie "Sun Valley Serenade" (1941). This is the second half of the original version of "Chattanooga Choo Choo" which was debuted in this movie. You never hear the full version of the song except in the movie or on the movie soundtrack album.
@hp2ie8 Thanks for the info. I just remember seeing it in "Orchestra Wives". A great performance in any case. I'll have to check out"Sun Valley Serenade" when it comes up on TMC.
@hoehawk99 Congratulations for your good taste, Btw. Did you know, that "Bieber" is the German name for beaver?. He should down trees for the cold winter and nothing else ...
Wow! The guys dancing, especially the last 22 seconds of this clip, are awesome! This is stuff that even Gene Kelly didn't do, although Donald O'Conner did a good flip off a wall in the movie "Singing In The Rain".
Were these two dancers still working in the 60s? I remember a couple guys with similar style to The Nicholas Bros dancing on stage at the London Palladium. They sang and danced and did just about any trick you can think of.
I thought of that. It does really, it's just nowadays you have to dig for it. There are songs with meaning, there are films with a powerful messages. Years will pass, and people will remember this days with nostalgia.
My Grandmother used to sing this to me when I was young. Of course I always found it special because my name is Caroline, and the lyric "dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer, than you have your ham & eggs in Carolina" seemed meant for me!
I sure hope when I get older that I don't complain as much as "today's music" like some of you people do. It's sad. What will going to Youtube complaining about "today's music" and "rap crap" solve? I personally categorize music by its quality and not by its age. If today's music bothers you so much don't listen to it--there are plenty of ways to listen to the music that you love. Or how about promoting the artists today who actually DO make great music but are struggling for some recognition?
For those who pontificate about which art is better or "crap", this or Rap, please re-assume your well worn back seat and keep following. Let those who have powered American musical and dance culture lead the way as usual. That innate rhythmic craftsmanship is surely not understood by outsiders but whose products are globally enjoyed and copied, spawned from African drums, Negro spirituals via Jazz and Rock to Rap today, each iteration scoffed at but always proved ahead of the curve. lol
@gcpropertymanagement I agree, I remember when I first picked up a tap shoes and saw the bottom I was like OMG. I have full respect for them, it is like dancing on Ice.
Excuse me. I want to know the lyrics of end section of singing, about "When you hear the ______ blowing eight to the bar", "______ all the coal in". Please. THX.
@KosaiAvonej The average person that would be searching for this video would already know that, those that ended up here by mistake more than likely don't care.
@singingsmithy Sure you can. I saw one of them (not sure which) live as a headliner at one of the big downtown theaters in San Francisco in the nineties (or was it the eighties?). As I remember one of the brothers died but the other one toured America. This isn't my kind of music but the Nicolas Brothers were special.
