Ratamahatta is a word play close of manhatan of rats, thing that is close of the word play of Favela, biboca, maloca, bocada, Garagem. So its not a random giberrish , is just a inbuid in lots of cultural stuff, aswell as the clip culting the afro religion.

  • Awesome!

  • this has a soulfly sound.

  • Soulfly has a Sepultura sound. Guess why?

  • I'm just saying that this sounds like something Soulfly would have done. I love all three bands (Sepultura, Soulfly, CC), but Soulfly emphasised the tribal sound just a bit more.

  • Would have done? This came out before Soulfly even existed.

  • Yeah, I know. But before I found it was Sepultura, I thought this song was by Soulfly. I didn't hear "Ratamahatta" til about 2001 anyway...when Soulfly was around.

  • Cavalera....

  • unica musica boa mermo

  • This song made me love metal.

I think i was about 7 or 8 years old when my older brother passed me a tape with this song. Amazing.

    For Shureeeeeeee!

Sepultura, even without Max, remains as one of the best metal bands the has ever seen!

  • okay I have an open mind but I think that Sepultura without Max do not even exist ..Max voice is so unique ,this is why I say this...

On the other hand .. Soulfly DO exist ;-)

  • I agree Sepultura without Max SUX! Max was Sepultura! Soulfly kicks ass too =D

    very good this song

they sing like animals, just awesome!

    until the foreigners they like

  • Tudo se trata da cultura e do folclore popular brasileiros

  • "Ratamahatta !!!" - this is Jonathan davis?

  • no. this is Max Cavalera. This is Sepultura. Korn had only released their first album and this was out 2 years later, before they did too much with scat.

  • this is brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown

  • Oh yes, and Wikipedia has a lot of interesting details about these brazillian "folk heroes".

    Sepultura!

  • It does mean something!

The lyrics in this song are expressions from Brazillian dialects/slangs. So the song itself is a reference to brazillian regional culture.

The 1st part of song has slangs that refers to slums, their bars, alleys and drug dealing points; Then...

    >Ze do Caixao: Brazillian horror B movie director

    >Zumbi: started a revolution with afrodescendants back when they were slaves

    >Lampião: Feared leader of a militia/gang in the north of Brazil circa 1930.

    Hope it helped!

  • Muito boa a explicação!!!!

  • who sings the start of ratamahatta it sounds so cool

  • Sorry to ask but...what Ratamahatta means ?

  • nothing :D

  • literally nothing, or it doesnt mean anything?

  • doesn't mean anything

  • Ok,in Spain if you go to Galicia and you speak portuguese you're alright, but if you go to Catalunha it's totally diferent, they are in the same country but they speak completely diferent.

The Native tongue for this two languges is Latim that became later the Gallego-Portuguese and then for the comtemporary portuguese.

But anyway in my first comment i was talking about lyrics arragement and this is completely diferent.

    SEPULTURA ROCKS

I'm sorry for the off topic.

  • also, they are mutually inteligible (kinda)

i mean, almost anyone who speaks spanish natively can read portuguese and understand it, and almost anyone who speaks portugese as their native language can understand written and spoken spanish. you see a lot of that in the interviews to soccer players (reporters asking questions in spanish and players answering in portuguese).

  • Well, not really. I'm a native english speaker and I find portuguese impossible to understand.

I find italian and even french way easier to understand than portuguese, even if I know all of 'em come from latin.

Anyways, great song. Though, it kinda reminds me of a nu-ish style of music...

  • are you crazy italian and french are wicked languages lol i'm portuguese and i started learning english when i was 7, i also had 3 years of french and i don't remember anything lol

  • Well, I was born in Italy, and lived 3 years there, so I suppose the language somehow has stayed in the back of my mind all this time, lol. However, I cannot explain why I find french easy...but portuguese is insaneeeeee! It's an awesome language, but it confuses me to no end.

  • As everything in the world u retarded son of a biatch !!!

  • Zé do caixão, zumbi e lampião!!! heros of brazil!!

  • Spanish is a Latin based language that came from vulgar Latin—the Latin spoken in the late Western Roman Empire. English is a Germanic Language, a language whose origins came from the peoples of the British isles, such as Pagan Anglo and Saxons.

However, due to the Norman conquest of England in 1066, the English language was infiltrated and influenced by old French. So, there is Latin in there...considering French is a bastard language of old Roman Latin.

  • Dam don't get mad, my idea is that every language has it's own sapce it's own tune.

Portuguese of portugal it's miles away of the lyrics arragement of brazilian music.

    Anyway enjoy the music.

Ps."don't get your balls in a twist" LOL LOL LOL.

  • Amigo, discordo profundamente.

Ex. " Boas" = Tudo Legal LOL

  • Awesome videos

  • Of course portuguese is similar to spanish

  • melhor musica do sepultura

  • It's nothing similar to spanish

Hello uptown, Hello downtown, Hello midtown, Hello trenchtown

    Ratamahatta!!!

  • are those actual words? wat language is it?

  • Awsome song and video.

  • Yeah! Me too! I think this song is the keystone for people not liking this music. Kind of a simplified crosswords for dummies. The song is full of helps for understanding it. Isn't the rhythm a... samba???

  • xD Ratamahatta!

  • Fuck Yeah,I still love them!

  • This is some serious rhythmic awesomeness. I love the way the steel kettle drum is integrated in the mix.

  • This really isn't "nu metal"....

  • I agree, but even though this song sounds like nu-metal, the rest of the album isn't.

  • Hello downtown!!!!!

  • sick xD

  • Zé do Caixão is a crazy old man that makes trash films here in Brazil. He has enormous nails.Zumbi, like someone said, was a black slave that fought for freedom.Lampião was the leader of Cangaço,that was a movement of social banditry in the northeast of Brazil, the poorest region here. Finally, they were all important people of Brazil's history.

  • Great song...Sepultura kick asses!

  • somone should make a apocalyptico tribute video with this in the back ground

  • Grande MAAAAAAAAAAAXXXXXXXX!!!!!!!! sepultura senza te estão mortas

  • CHECK OUT THE VIDEO RESPONCE!

     :)

    IMAO

  • meu Deus..essa música é a melhor mano

  • brasil rocks;DD

  • x D

  • I can tell you just that :

    garagem = garage

    zumbi = zombie

lampião = its a kind of lantern so old...but its also the name of an historical man here...

favela = is like a suburb...

biboca = its a crazy name for a little store...

    porra = same as shit

'Ratamahatta', not a Portuguese word but a suggestive sound combo full of associations, as 'rata' means rat, 'Mahatta' cannot but evoke, given the song's themes

  • Zumbi was an important brasilian leader, he fight for liberty of black slaves in 1600! In november 20 is a national day when brasilians remember Zumbi and fight for liberty!

  • What is Ratamahatta ??? Can somebody translate this ???
