I would say that the general publics view on UFOs and aliens is that it all started during the second world war. However, if you dig deep into history you with find written and pictorial evidence/accounts that are thousands of years old. I don't remember the exact details, but there was one or more cave paintings found in Australia showing an oval/disc object that supposedly "descended from the heavens."
