I dont see what was wrong with the question, it clearly stated "Which Vegetable". Tomatos can't be the right answer because Tomatos are actually fruit.
The 16K questions were always inordinately difficult it seems. Well... sometimes at least... in this case and in a few other cases I can think of. Rick Rosner really got shafted. I'd love to see his run.
The story actually goes that the study in question was conducted in Scotland, not England. Toutant also contacted an Oxford (English University) professor and got the professor to send him literature on a study he had conducted on glowing tomatoes. Toutant wrote a letter to the show about all of that, and they invited him back on.
Botanically, a tomato is the ovary, together with its seeds, of a flowering plant: therefore it is a fruit. However, tomatoes are not as sweet as those foodstuffs usually called fruits and, from a culinary standpoint, it is typically served as part of a salad or main course of a meal, as are vegetables, rather than at dessert in the case of most fruits. The term vegetable has no botanical meaning and is purely a culinary term.
it was 1.8 million because every episode they were adding 10,000 if someone did not win the million, the day he was playing, that's how much was accumulated
Part I: About the question regarding glowing vegetables, Ed did a little research and found out that the glowing potatoes were being researched in Scotland, not England. I think the writers wrote "England" to mistakenly refer to all of Great Britain.
Part II: If the writers had written "Britain" instead, there might have still been some protest, but WWTBAM could have gotten away with it because it would be correct, as England and Scotland are part of Britain. But as it is, the glowing tomato research was in fact done in England. Most of the audience
it's pretty simple. the programmers made a mistake. It was actually tomatoes in the news, they most likely knew it, but through some bizzare thinking, they decided to program potatoes as the correct answer.
accordin 2 what he said on grand slam there were "maybe 2 correct answers" in that question put this in the search box: Grand Slam - Ed Toutant vs. Leszek Pawlowicz - Intros
a tomato is a vegetable, and is also a fruit. There is no reason it can't be both.
from Websters: 2. A plant used or cultivated for food for man or domestic animals, as the cabbage, turnip, potato, bean, dandelion, etc.; also, the edible part of such a plant, as prepared for market or the table.

Right now, they're airing the shows during their progressive jackpot, which should be at $1.89 million on tonight's rerun. If they ever air it, I'll try and get it for ya, but I can't make any guarantees.

Vegetable is not a scientific term. It just refers to plants that human beings eat.
Fruit is a scientific term referring to a specific part of a flowering plant.
Fruit and vegetable are not mutually exclusive terms.
A tomato is definitely a fruit by scientific guidelines, but it can also be considered a vegetable.

@Jasondh22
The same reason why your dad invited your mom back for a second night. He needed a little bit of excitement for one night.

But as it is, the glowing tomato research was in fact done in England. Most of the audience
was aware of this, since 63% picked the tomato.

Part III: Ed notified WWTBAM about his research, agreed with Ed, and invited him back to resume his run at the million-plus dollars.

Tomatoes are fruits. You can't argue.
pivotdude8675309 2 years ago 2
read the definition I posted from Websters. Cultivated fruits are by definition also vegetables, much the same way that a square is also a rectangle.
