I remember picking this album up at Tower Records when it came out. I knew the personnel but hadn't heard much about this recording. Big surprise for me!
This is fantastic! I do however like Jerry Garcia's versions from 5-5-82 in Oregon Prison (acoustic) and the 2-6-72 electric version (harder to find) worth giving a listen to even if you've never been into Garcia/Grateful Dead.
@ncbloom A few years ago Kooper stunned the crowd in NYC at his birthday gig when he and Jimmy Vivino & band re-created this number note for note. Unbelievable
I first heard this gem back in 1983, when I moved in with a new dorm roommate who had a fantastic vinyl collection. One of the best that I've ever heard.
killer album, killer players. what a soulful blues guitar in mike bloomfield. sadly, the now long departed mike bloomfield. kooper's organ work, stills vocals. this is is a desert island album, if ever there was one. his holy modal.........oh shit, i could go and on. what a masterpiece !
this has to be one of the best Lps of all time.... was then and still is now....this was music at it's best ....words just can't describe ....put it in the player...says everything........
@chrisb1953 Harvey Brooks is the bassist and actually this is just Stephen Stills on this particular song. As you may or may not know, Mike Bloomfield, was in a pretty bad heroin addiction at this time and half way through the recording of this album, he split, leaving Al Kooper to make some calls for someone to fill in. I heard he originally tried to contact Hendrix but he couldn't or didn't want to so he called Stills up and the rest is history
Thanks, a very interesting back story. Probably just as well Hendrix couldn't make it otherwise Stills would have once again missed some well-deserved recognition.
yep, Harvey Brooks is the bassist here and he also contributed an instrumental tune titled 'Harvey's Tune' as the closing track of the album.
bty, yes indeed Bloomfield retired from the final gig for recording of their live album Live Adventures, took place in the Filmore West on September 1968, not because his drug addiction but due to his insomnia. of course, the recordings for the Super Session took place earlier than that.

Bob Dylan met a VN vet, as early as '65 (when he wrote this)?

@ferdinandthecrow from a timeline perspective,it's plausible. it would be early on in the war for sure.

Some great guitar riffs from Stills & Bloomfield.
But who plays those nice-sounding bass lines? Al Kooper?
