If I was this bus driver, I’d be looking at a legal recourse against you. Don't get me wrong, what he did was unprofessional and stupid, but instead of posting this on you tube, you should have just notified STO and let them handle it internally. Do we really need to know what happens to him after? Poor driver, he no longer has a private life when he goes out into public, should someone recognise him. We were talking about this at work today. Sad to say, but often the fear of embarrassment is stronger than logic or reprimands from superiors. Hopefully everyone will drive better using this as an example. I see all kinds of drivers do off things. Canada's worst driver tv show is a great example.

@lsdisciples You do crosswords while driving? Than maybe you need to get a ticket. I hate seeing people in traffic on phones, texting or otherwise with divided attention. That is exactly how accidents happen. I agree banning smartphones on buses doesn't really help anything and seems like a cop-out regulation, but still, that doesn't validate distracted driving.
STO thinks the driver's "right to privacy" was violated by this video. How about extending this logic to everyday driver's? Red light cameras take pictures without consent, thus I can't speed through red lights. Police stop drivers and administer breathalyzers, thus I can't drink and drive. I'm sorry but public safety does outweigh "right to privacy" while in a public place.

According to CTV web site: "Transit officials in Gatineau say the bus driver has been disciplined, but they wouldn't specify what that disciplinary measure was. Officials add that the driver has a good record." So he won't be fired...wow!

Having kids of my own now, I really hope this driver gets what he deserves! I applaud you for putting this on. I know about complaints to the STO, and them NOT EVER being taken care of. After trying and trying, to no avail, this was a good route.... and with seeing this video, i found out that there are sooooooo many more that I had never saw. I am going back to work soon and will have to be traveling by way of the super STO, and am not excited one bit!
I'd like to share some further news. Producers from the Maury Povich show have contacted me and they would like to use this video in an upcoming Caught on Video show. I got the licensing papers and I agreed that I would receive NO PAYMENT from it. If this video creates awareness and possibly save some lives thats all the payment I need from being as some of you say "famous"

The way I see things. I did not make this driver look bad or any bus driver look bad. I think they are doing a good job at that all on their own as my video shows. I didn't ask him to put our lives in danger so maybe some of us need to direct our thoughts and opinions to the driver and not the one who happened to film it. Cameras are there for many reasons. I could claim "privacy rights" when i walk into a store. even some buses have cameras...public is not private...
@jaimisbb This is the reality in Gatineau STO bus driver, i record more then 2 weeks on a daily based what kind of infraction they can do, its amazing i record more then 15 videos of some very dangereous video, and missing more then 20, so imagine the amount of illegal stuf they do, i was just riding 30 min in the morning and 30 min at nigth...

Seeing this video with a commentary on the News is totally different because each party (e.g. STO) can respond and fill in on what they will do. "Deserves to be humliated"? A bit of humanity, please.
I myself agree the driver should be properly dealt with, I don't believe a illegal invasion of privacy is right. If the complaints aren't followed up escalate it to next level. Make sure you get the bus# date, time, location, and run. No response, go higher. it is a very taxing and challenging job. It is a job and the rules need to be followed. Reading a route description ocasionally must be allowed, or you get off track but distraction or impairment are the main cause of accidents.
This needs to stop.. These people make their money to drive a bus and do their best to keep passengers safe. This man is not only endangering himself and his passengers but everyone else on the road. His employment with STO should be terminated right away. People are charged for far less then what this guy is doing..

The funny thing is..is that his bus needed servicing so once we got to the rivermead stop he let us off and he got off to have a smoke...plenty of time to do his paper work

People who drive while distracted are not only risking their own lives, but their passengers' lives and the lives of complete strangers on the road. In BC it is illegal to drive and use hand held devices and still lots of people are doing it. When I catch people doing it, I let them know that I don't appreciate them putting my life at risk. I report people and have let them know in any way I can.
To those trying to justify this man's action and minimizing what he is doing is not as dangerous as talking or text-ing on the phone....are you serious??? There is a right time to everything...though I recognize that he is capable of multi-tasking, I'll bet that whatever he is doing will not take a lot of time to do when the bus is on stop or when his shift is done. Driver is a trained professional and should be respected. It might seem dangerous for some people that are unable to multitask, but given that there were no incidents or proof of the bus driver talking on a cellphone, this driver should be allowed to continue driving for STO. If you actually had proof of him talking on a cellphone, my opinion would have changed drastically. Too little, too late.
Jaimisbb, send this to the STO headquarters. This really needs to be brought to their attention. I take the STO buses when I work, and have found that it can be a rough ride too. This is ridiculous!!! I see why you posted it, not to get mega hits, just to bring it to peoples attention.

Initially I was going to bring this to the STO main office but considering it takes me 45 minutes just to bring my daughter to daycare then another 45 to get to work then all over again after work on a bus, so thats about 3 hrs of my day I really didn't have the time. I have made past complaints and they were not handled. Also, I was sucker punched in the back of my head on a bus and the drivers supervisor said to drop us off at the next stop to deal with it ourselves

I stopped taking the STO IDIOTS a long time ago, we were stopped at a light going down hill and when he picked up his cell he let go of the brakes, we got hit head on by a school bus. 33 of us made a complaint and he is still driving a bus today as we speak. I'm glad she filmed this.

I was on an OC Transpo bus in Ottawa, and the driver of that bus was on his cellphone, and was writing notes while driving down Chamberlain. I didn't have a video camera, but he was steering with his knee.

@OttawaITGuru incorrect. In his jurisdiction, there are no laws against "distracted driving." At this point, distracted driving is a matter of opinion and while you feel it's okay to voice your opinion, you should not be posting information that is not correct which could affect this driver's reputation.

I am happy you took action by taking this video. If it had have been me...I personally may have felt unsafe/uncomfortable with the situation but I probablly wouldnt have felt like I could have any power over the situation. I would have just suffered silently. Its good you took action.

If I was this bus driver, I’d be looking at a legal recourse against you. Don't get me wrong, what he did was unprofessional and stupid, but instead of posting this on you tube, you should have just notified STO and let them handle it internally. Do we really need to know what happens to him after? Poor driver, he no longer has a private life when he goes out into public, should someone recognise him. With all these electronics devices, our private lives are becoming a thing of the past.

We were talking about this at work today. Sad to say, but often the fear of embarrassment is stronger than logic or reprimands from superiors. Hopefully everyone will drive better using this as an example. I see all kinds of drivers do off things. Canada's worst driver tv show is a great example.

STO thinks the driver's "right to privacy" was violated by this video. How about extending this logic to everyday driver's? Red light cameras take pictures without consent, thus I can't speed through red lights. Police stop drivers and administer breathalyzers, thus I can't drink and drive. Having kids of my own now, I really hope this driver gets what he deserves! I applaud you for putting this on. I know about complaints to the STO, and them NOT EVER being taken care of. After trying and trying, to no avail, this was a good route.... and with seeing this video, i found out that there are sooooooo many more that I had never saw. I am going back to work soon and will have to be traveling by way of the super STO, and am not excited one bit!

The way I see things. I did not make this driver look bad or any bus driver look bad. I think they are doing a good job at that all on their own as my video shows. I didn't ask him to put our lives in danger so maybe some of us need to direct our thoughts and opinions to the driver and not the one who happened to film it. Cameras are there for many reasons. I could claim "privacy rights" when i walk into a store. even some buses have cameras...public is not private...

I myself agree the driver should be properly dealt with, I don't believe a illegal invasion of privacy is right. If the complaints aren't followed up escalate it to next level. Make sure you get the bus# date, time, location, and run. No response, go higher. it is a very taxing and challenging job. It is a job and the rules need to be followed. Reading a route description ocasionally must be allowed, or you get off track but distraction or impairment are the main cause of accidents.

In BC it is illegal to drive and use hand held devices and still lots of people are doing it. When I catch people doing it, I let them know that I don't appreciate them putting my life at risk. Driver is a trained professional and should be respected. It might seem dangerous for some people that are unable to multitask, but given that there were no incidents or proof of the bus driver talking on a cellphone, this driver should be allowed to continue driving for STO. If you actually had proof of him talking on a cellphone, my opinion would have changed drastically. Too little, too late.

Initially I was going to bring this to the STO main office but considering it takes me 45 minutes just to bring my daughter to daycare then another 45 to get to work then all over again after work on a bus, so thats about 3 hrs of my day I really didn't have the time. I have made past complaints and they were not handled. Also, I was sucker punched in the back of my head on a bus and the drivers supervisor said to drop us off at the next stop to deal with it ourselves

Whenever an isolated case like this appears on the media, WE get the flak, regardless... Because all people get to see are stupid things like that, emphasized by media coverage. I get plenty of generalized comments to know what I'm talking about...

You are taking this way out of proportion by thinking everybody is too stupid to understand this is an isolated case. I sympathize for the crap you go through everyday because a lot of assholes suddenly think every bus driver is like that, but you have to stop accusing EVERYBODY for that! I don't suffer from any "disease", thank you for caring (and insulting, which I haven't done to you). Furthermore, I do NOT work for the STO. I said I was a bus driver, but I did not specify where. And for the last time: videos like these ARE causing damage to PROFESSIONNALS (yes: like me, and like the great majority of us). I'm NOT accusing anyone, I'm merely pointing out that fact.

If, after that, you feel that you've done the right thing instead of going to the proper channel (of lodging a formal complaint BY EMAIL - yes, it can be done that way too, no need to go to the office!), then you're beyond any attempt to make you realize what your reaction really creates... Instead of helping, you are causing more harm. Basically: revenge. Pure and simple. Which will get you nowhere in life.

@jodelle6 Il ne s'agit pas de "cacher" le fait, mais d'éviter de faire dans le sensationnel, ce qui est tout-à-fait le cas ici. Comme je le disais dans mon commentaire "imbécile", une plainte formelle avec preuve à l'appui provoquera À COUP SÛR (et je sais de quoi je parle) une convocation disciplinaire à laquelle le syndicat, si puissant soit-il, ne pourra RIEN opposer. Le responsable sera sévèrement réprimandé, voire licencié, et le tumulte public sera évité, justice sera rendue. En paix...

I was on an OC Transpo bus in Ottawa, and the driver of that bus was on his cellphone, and was writing notes while driving down Chamberlain. I didn't have a video camera, but he was steering with his knee.

At this point, distracted driving is a matter of opinion and while you feel it's okay to voice your opinion, you should not be posting information that is not correct which could affect this driver's reputation.

I am happy you took action by taking this video. If it had have been me...I personally may have felt unsafe/uncomfortable with the situation but I probablly wouldnt have felt like I could have any power over the situation. I would have just suffered silently. Its good you took action.

Et là, j'excuse pas la gaffe en question, je dis juste: arrêtez de généraliser, câlibwère! Des millions de kilomètres parcourus, des milliers de PROFESSIONNELS sur les routes, des centaines de milliers de personnes transportées chaque jour SANS INCIDENT! Mais qu'est-ce qu'on retient?
