Ever since the market went 'multiformat', there has been more and more confusion about what an cRPG is. This video proves it. I think it;s to do with so many games saying they have 'lite RPG elements' and games like Jade Empire and Mass Effect and Dragon Age calling themselves RPG's when they either don't have avatar stats/ attributes or they don't have an open world sandbox type gameworld, These surely are the three things that make a game a cRPG, avatar stats and a sandbox world. @peri2502 Exploration has always been in RPG's throughout history. Let me put it another way - if it's not open world, it must be linear, and since when have RPG's been linear? All the Elder Scrolls RPG's are open world, all the Wizardry RPG's are, all the Ultima RPG's are, all the Gothic's RPG's are, all the Fallout's RPG's are, etc. Only from 2005, when the 'multiformat' market has arrived have we started arguing that RPG's can be linear to support action-adventures like Mass Effect, etc!

@HardWarUK In my opinion RPG's have always been linear to a degree...which is required, if you want to tell a story. In games like Ultima, you just had the option to roam around as you wish until you pick the thread back up. And while I basically agree with your underlying criticism that modern RPG's don't offer much in terms of exploration anymore, I think that storytelling is a far more important factor in an RPG. For example, I think that the Mass Effect games are excellent RPG's...

@HardWarUK because they really sucked me into the world. Of course, it would have been nice to be able to explore the galaxy more, but there is always a trade off. If you look at a game like the Elder Scrolls series, you had a huge world to explore, but the main storyline really wasn't all that involving or gripping. Personally, I prefer a well told story to the ability to roam around freely.

@peri2502 Your so right, you can always tell a story better in a linear game than an open world game. Point and click adventures are the opitimy of this, with some of the best stories (The Longest Journey, Syberia, etc) and that is because the adventure genre was the most linear. So Mass Effect doesn have a great story, but that's because it's not an sandbox RPG, it is a fairly linear action adventure. You talk about story being most important, but EVERY game has a story, so it's a mute point.

@HardWarUK Every game has a story, but not every game tells it well. If you look at the archetypal pencil and paper RPG's you will see that they always were linear, although players had the option to deviate. But every roleplayer will emphasize that a good game session had a great and well told story, not that the DM left them to run around aimlessly. Making an RPG as a sandbox game is one way, but it is not the only way, and it certainly isn't the classical way.

Not a RPG, it's a FPS. FPS are RPG by definition, but there are so many FPS, and so many RPG that are not FPS, with huge differences in genre I.E. Multiplayer experience and single player experience, weapon choices, etc.

Freelancer came out in 2001...so its preety stupid to put it on a list of games from 2007+2008...and its not even an RPG,Devil may cry isent an RPG!!! its a hack and slash action game,just because you can upgrade shit dosent make it an RPG! Though they're not new, I'd recommend Fallout 1 and 2 or Planescape Torment.

While they CAN be played combat heavy, these games are also well known for being playable as a diplomatic character where you can talk your way through the game and have to use next to no violence. I dunno about Planescape Torments Vista compatibility though.
