@xxtheklonexx The tool and the technique are not the same thing. Even though an expert guitar player can make say, an old guitar sound great, he will still prefer a newer one or rather one that corresponds to his needs. This is a great mod if you want a stiffer, or more responsive stick thats all, no skill involved.
Guys dont use tape. Use a heat contraction tube 12.7 mm in diameter. You need to expand it a little with a bender from the inside so that it fits. You make it contract with a lighter and its much neater. I placed just one layer in the wider area of the actuator and 3 or 4 (matter of preference) layers, on the narrow area of the actuator and it rocks!
Here I am after a few months of using the sharpie cap method instead of tape for the actuator.Even the SHARPIE CAP comes off after a few weeks of play. I cannot recommend this mod to anyone, other than the extra spring for the stiffer stick. Making the actuator thicker requires MONTHLY maintenance. Do it if you don't mind opening up your stick every month. ALSO TO ADD:The sharpie slowly grinds into plastic dust which can get into your micro-switches.Been experimenting with this for a year.
@Wadarec That would be because the sharpie is now doing the job of the actuator, which while it will somewhat work, it wasn't meant to take that kind of abuse. I have never felt a need to modify a joystick, it the user doesn't like it, there are many other options to try.
so technically, the mod is to extend the physical parts of the switches so that it will require less throw. Simple yet effective I'd say. Allows you to readjust back to the original if needed.
Does adding tape change (shorten) the engage distance? I wish the Sanwa JLF had the engage of a Seimitsu LS-32... I like the other aspects of the JLF though.
WOW this is awesome man. I'm gonna do everything you've just shown here. this is gonna make my light dashing in tekken a whole lot faster. Thanks for sharing man.
I used the papers on the switches for increasing the sensibility works perfectly, but i didnt do the other stuff with the tapes since i like the restriction by default, for the spring i tried it but my motions were a little of with the new resistance of the spring so i removed it
@digitalshower Why to buy something new, if the "default" stick is great too. Just needs a little modding for someone who prefer very light and fast reaction. Comments like that one is just plain stupidity...
I like your tutorial I used plastic straps for cardboard box and I cut them in little squares and put them in the cherry switch and it increased the the movements in Tekken I did not try SSF4 yet.
No disrespect intended, but why are you doing this? I thought the reason people bought sanwa sticks is because they were already good to go. Is it just me or are people making something as simple as a stick, 4 micro-switches, and an actuator way too involved?
@00Doug00 well, the reason is, that people have not many choices of buying the stick. I live in Europe and import of Sanwa parts AS was still expensive as hell. 350 USDs with postage and so.
@WakizashiSabre google gremlin solutions, its UK shop with almost everything you need, or arcade shop de and mod it for yourself, or buy qanba q4rad from gremlins :)
@00Doug00 You sound like a relative of mine who said "All these joystick things are the same, you're being ripped off if you think ones better than another"..
@andy7666 That is not even close to what I stated. I understand the differences in the joysticks, but the matter being addressed in this video was further modifying what would seem to be a decent performing joystick. I enjoy seeing the innovation that people have and don't believe you are being ripped off. I bought two Madcatz SFIV TE sticks which I plan on modding one day. Although 1 of 2 was broken out of the box I still can use the broken one to mod.
Hey so i assume the spring makes it spring back quicker? Also if i use the spring mod do i need the tape? I figured the tape was for less movement and quicker character reaction. I'm buying the spring and don't want to use any tape. Will that be fine without any problems?
Can someone please help me? I accidentally smudged some of the grease/lubricant off of the actuator and now the left button is a little less responsive; I have to push it harder for it to input any movement in games. What I'm asking is what kind of lubricant was used on the actuator, and where can I get it?
I have now been using this mod for about a year. The tape has too be replaced too often for it to be a practical mod.. I have to replace it every 2 months about. Using a piece of a sharpie cap is working MUCH better. Fits the actuator nicely, just cut the amount of cap you need with a hot knife.
I did this mod to Custom stick and it made my JLF (square gate) way better. Moves are much easier to pull off and can be done way faster. I used plastic post-its for the micro-switches, a Sharpie Ball Point pen cap for the actuator, and added the LS-33 spring. Overall a great mod.
If you are unsure about doing this mod, do not hesitate. Do it. It's so. Damn. Nice. And fun to do, too! The feel of the stick is night and day from what it used to be. Especially good if you're going for an octagonal gate (because of the generally reduced throw).
@genomyoshida Ya the spring gives it stronger resistance, so I guess it does feel closer to American arcade machines. Especially with the spring mod, I prefer to stick with the square gate. The stronger spring keeps me from bumping into corners when I want to do quick circular motions, but the corners are still there if I want to make sure I land on them.
I want to do this for my Mayflash piece of crap arcade stick. Can someone who's tried this on theirs tell me if it's a good idea or should I just throw it out the window?
I tried replacing the JLF spring with an LS-33 spring and I am very happy with the results. Reduced tension on the spring makes pivoting around a real pleasure. I also tried putting both a JLF and an LS-33 spring in but I couldn't live with the heavier tension.
this is a great mod. small deadzone = quicker moves, and less work. i used plastic bits for the switches, and cut a plastic ring from an empty (valvoline) bottle neck for the actuator, (make sure its a tight fit).
Heh, saw your cat at the end there. So basically you end up with a deadzone that's about the width of a hair with this? lol Looks crazy, need to try it on one of my sticks soon and see how it feels.
Just tried it out using cellotape wrapped generously (probably not as good as electrical tape, but it's all I had to hand) and some royal mail stamp packaging (i.e. roach cardboard) folded just once for the microswitch offset with some chewing to keep its shape.
Worked surprisingly well for a ghetto mod! Carved through online opponents immediately after!
You cant hit your corners because you used too much tape, making the actualtor too thick. I had this problem too at first. You have to really stop and look at what these mods are really doing for yourself, use logic, and modify to your own needs.
I just put a tiny piece of post it in there without folding. Any thicker makes the switches stick as if theyre being activated ALL THE TIME. This is why it "didnt respond". You can visually see them stick up.
Cant get the tape off? Come on man... did you crazy glue that shit?? Just cut it vertically with a box cutter and you can peel it off.

man you guys are fucking fags. I have no complaints with the JLF. If you don't like it at all, go buy an ls-32. Or just put cherry switches in that bitch fuck.
@ThreeSheets23 This actually works! Tried it yesterday. I actually added 1 layer of electrical tape to the actuator before putting the sharpie cap in, to make it fit more tightly.
the e-clip is enough to keep the cap attached to the actuator. i didn't add any electrical tape under it cause i want it to move freely with my octogate.
Thanks for the video. I ordered the spring, gty and also bat top for my hrap. This is just what i'm looking for. I want my jlf stick to be tighter like American sticks because i used them more then 12 years. I hope this make my stick just how i want it t be. Still great stick tough.
Well, y'all saved me some money, ya did. I'll have to try this very soon. The JLF on my TE stick feels too loose for my tastes. Too easy to accidentally hit a diagonal that I never meant to hit.
Okay did the mod yesterday. The part with the post its seems wrong.
I cant fold the paper more than twice and not have it constantly have the direction activated. Meaning folding a peice of post it 3 times is ALREADY TOO THICK. How did he do it so many times in the video?
I've only folded a little piece once, anything more than that will make the switches stick.
Overall, the stick feels alot better :] [I didn't do the spring mod.]
can you tell me the demensions of the seimitsu spring you put in as I dont want to order from lizardlick and wait 2 or 3 weeks for a 95 cent spring lol when I can just go to home depo
If you don't already have it Home Depot sell a box of 84 spring in the Buld. Supplies aisle. It cost $3.95 and will cost $2 less than the spring with shipping. There's several springs that fit awckwardly but get the job done. I ended up mashing three springs together to get a real heavy feel like a happ. Great for dashes!
great info homz a lot of these springs r totally useless but theres a set of three that really work well with the jlf stock spring and give you some kool options to work with thanx
Thanks. Just did this mod except I used all rubber(thin rubber tube cut and layered to fit and cut bits out of the leftovers for he micro switches) instead of tape and paper.
there's nothing in the diagonal to hit- diagonals are just hitting two switches at once- it works fine. Not sure what you mean by resistant in that case, but the tape has more texture than the plastic piece itself so- no, no problems there. Everything works or they wouldn't have posted the mod, haha. It just depends on how much dead zone/throw you want on your stick. this mod reduced both of those aspects, and increases throw resistance (the dual spring mod)
and for the update is that for the stick to react quicker as well??? and if so would the stick perform better if i only did the tape part and not put the post-it in the microswitches???
the tape around the stick is to make the microswitches depress with less throw (I think that is what is referred to as smaller deadzone, but not positive). The update part (tape around the shaft), makes it so the amount of space the stick can move AFTER the switch is already depressed is less... I'm not sure what that space is refered to. But basically it just makes the stick a lot tighter.
so all the tape basically makes the player use less force or movement in order to perform whatever move he wants??? therefore the stick is now extremely sensitive???
mm, not really..... the amount of force needed to move the stick is only affected by the spring (in this case they add another spring to it, so it actually takes MORE force with that mod, but that is unrelated to the tape). The tape around the actuator makes it so that the stick has to move LESS distance to activate the switches. The amount of movement the stick can take without activating a switch is called the "dead zone"- that mod decreases the dead zone.
ohhh i see thanks for explaining all this, so i wouldnt have to include every single mod right??? i could just do one. because im thinking about the spring mod. and also can i take out the spring again once i put it in??
the tape on the BOTTOM part reduces the amount of room the stick has to move overall. That is called the 'throw'. So taping up the bottom part reduces the throw. I did this mod but ended up undoing it because I personally didn't l ike it. I experimented a bit but ultimately it just wasn't for me. The switches were sticking and it just didn't feel good. I'd like to reduce the dead zone just a liiittle bit (and I did keep the spring for added stiffness), but otherwise stock is fine for me.
the point of this mod is to make it more like an LS-32, they're already more stiff like this (although doing the mod as suggested makes it a little stiffer I think). Doing this to an LS-32 would be overkill though I think
I guess that cherrys would make it worse, cause the Omron swtiches they activate as soon as you press them, and it doesn't have to be pressed all the way down to do so. But the cherrys they just activate when you reach the "bottom" of the micro, so you'd have to put the paper inside the cherrys too.
The JLF is designed to have a balanced neutral/throw ratio. Which is probably the best set-up. However its certainly worth trying since you can easily reverse the mod. You may find the shorter engagement, throw and stiffer resistance to your liking !
What spring would you use to make the JLF stiffer? I'm so used to Euro/IL Compeition sticks that my new JLF feels so loose that it almost feels like a broken Happ stick.
I like the accuracy of the JLF, but it's just too loose for my tastes. Any tips on stiffening it up?
awesome, just tried this on a couple sanwas. I skipped the tape, i just shimmed the inside of the swithces. My joysticks are much tighter now. thanks!
I did the entire mod thanks! I was just wondering could i use 400mm for the electrical tape around the actuator to have an even shorter throw :) or is that too much tape that it makes it go bad?
Great Mod there. I'm just curious in the positive and negative points on the JLF. If you connect them each with a wire and solder them on a PCB would it work or do you need the 5 pin cable to work?
This mod looks tight, but I was wondering, do you really need the extra spring in there? And is it do-able with a square gate as well? Thanks a lot for the vid, can't wait to try it out!
I did the mod with a GT-Y because I had it on at that time, if you look at the text in the video at 5.20 it says something about the square gate (GT-8F).
The extra spring is there to make it a little harder to move (more resistance) but if you are fine with what it feels like as an original then you don´t have to add the spring.
I have JLF-TP-8Y stick w/ squaregate, could you explain what is the purpose of this Ultimate MOD ? I am guessing it's for a shorter throw which is nice. I have been wanting to do that for a while now because I have trouble doing shoryuken motion on Player-1 side and I think it's cuz the position of my hand has to go farther on P1 side as opposed to P2 side where its just a quick whip of the wrist. Do you know if Sanwa makes a stick that feels like JLF-TP-8Y but comes naturally with short throw?
this is such a shitty mod. can't believe I wasted my time doing it.

Is the update supposed to be an alternate method of getting to hit the switches with less throw? or... what?

can you tell me the demensions of the seimitsu spring you put in as I dont want to order from lizardlick and wait 2 or 3 weeks for a 95 cent spring lol when I can just go to home depo

^^ What this guy said.
Hayzeuszilla 2 years ago
If you don't already have it Home Depot sell a box of 84 spring in the Buld. Supplies aisle. It cost $3.95 and will cost $2 less than the spring with shipping. There's several springs that fit awckwardly but get the job done. I ended up mashing three springs together to get a real heavy feel like a happ. Great for dashes!
FoxZero666 2 years ago
great info homz a lot of these springs r totally useless but theres a set of three that really work well with the jlf stock spring and give you some kool options to work with thanx
jjthorn13 2 years ago
Thanks. Just did this mod except I used all rubber(thin rubber tube cut and layered to fit and cut bits out of the leftovers for he micro switches) instead of tape and paper.
ryanmeursing 2 years ago
Interesting.
With all that electrical tape, if I have a square restrictor, will I hit diagonals?
And another question: the electrical tape is enough resistant?
haggar123456789 2 years ago
there's nothing in the diagonal to hit- diagonals are just hitting two switches at once- it works fine. Not sure what you mean by resistant in that case, but the tape has more texture than the plastic piece itself so- no, no problems there. Everything works or they wouldn't have posted the mod, haha. It just depends on how much dead zone/throw you want on your stick. this mod reduced both of those aspects, and increases throw resistance (the dual spring mod)
ryoaska1 2 years ago
whats the taping around the edge part for???
and for the update is that for the stick to react quicker as well??? and if so would the stick perform better if i only did the tape part and not put the post-it in the microswitches???
tuber52 2 years ago
the tape around the stick is to make the microswitches depress with less throw (I think that is what is referred to as smaller deadzone, but not positive). The update part (tape around the shaft), makes it so the amount of space the stick can move AFTER the switch is already depressed is less... I'm not sure what that space is refered to. But basically it just makes the stick a lot tighter.
ryoaska1 2 years ago
so all the tape basically makes the player use less force or movement in order to perform whatever move he wants??? therefore the stick is now extremely sensitive???
tuber52 2 years ago
mm, not really..... the amount of force needed to move the stick is only affected by the spring (in this case they add another spring to it, so it actually takes MORE force with that mod, but that is unrelated to the tape). The tape around the actuator makes it so that the stick has to move LESS distance to activate the switches. The amount of movement the stick can take without activating a switch is called the "dead zone"- that mod decreases the dead zone.
ryoaska1 2 years ago
ohhh i see thanks for explaining all this, so i wouldnt have to include every single mod right??? i could just do one. because im thinking about the spring mod. and also can i take out the spring again once i put it in??
tuber52 2 years ago
the tape on the BOTTOM part reduces the amount of room the stick has to move overall. That is called the 'throw'. So taping up the bottom part reduces the throw. I did this mod but ended up undoing it because I personally didn't l ike it. I experimented a bit but ultimately it just wasn't for me. The switches were sticking and it just didn't feel good. I'd like to reduce the dead zone just a liiittle bit (and I did keep the spring for added stiffness), but otherwise stock is fine for me.
ryoaska1 2 years ago
EXACTLY what I needed. I need to tighten up my stick!!! Don't got Sanwa, but it should work just about the same. Thanks!

This video has been very useful! I'm sure many others will make use of this. Thanks Akihabarashop :)
Has anyone done anything similar to a Seimitsu LS-32-01??
Moooyt 2 years ago
the point of this mod is to make it more like an LS-32, they're already more stiff like this (although doing the mod as suggested makes it a little stiffer I think). Doing this to an LS-32 would be overkill though I think
ryoaska1 2 years ago
Hey, result! I can stick with Sanwa for an easy time in putting the stick in but get that extra stiffness for my shmups! ^_^

what games would benefit this mod?
rawr215 2 years ago
My question is had you chose to put on cherry switches instead of putting paper in ur microswicthes would that have given it the same effect
jeffezy 2 years ago
I guess that cherrys would make it worse, cause the Omron swtiches they activate as soon as you press them, and it doesn't have to be pressed all the way down to do so. But the cherrys they just activate when you reach the "bottom" of the micro, so you'd have to put the paper inside the cherrys too.
deathcrusader 2 years ago
I dont know what cherrys you tried, but the ones i got are way too sensitive

This may not be to everyones liking.

Pasky1382 2 years ago
To make it stiffer, you can stretch the jlf spring. Stretch little by little until you find your desired stiffness.

add an ls-33 spring or ls-55

Will the paper stay in ther forever or will you have to constantly replace it? Also which is better octagonal or square gates?

Can this mod also be done on a Seimitsu LS-56?
I want to shorten the throw.
justin2273 3 years ago
It basically would work on any joystick even ur seimetsu LS-56.
bkmelendez 3 years ago
I did the entire mod thanks! I was just wondering could i use 400mm for the electrical tape around the actuator to have an even shorter throw :) or is that too much tape that it makes it go bad?
bkmelendez 3 years ago
What everybody should do is go with much tape from the beginning and take some off until you like the feeling of it.

Can we buy just the ls-33 spring from your store?
dogg1024 3 years ago
Ah Found it!
For others who may be having trouble too.
For each stick on the site there are two drop down listboxes. The left is for ball top colour selection, the right is for individual parts.
Go to the Seimitsu LS-33 and select #7 Spring.
Great video tutorial Akihabarashop man. :D

Great Mod there. I'm just curious in the positive and negative points on the JLF. If you connect them each with a wire and solder them on a PCB would it work or do you need the 5 pin cable to work?
rystool 3 years ago
very nice, where is the music from?
hugechicken 3 years ago
Ryu's theme from Street Fighter Alpha 3.
xSacredEdge 3 years ago
Why do this when you could just buy a LS-32 instead?
Vespene 3 years ago
One reason is that regular HRAP´s that only take JLF´s can make the joystick better.
Also, some people like Seimitsu and others like Sanwa.
Akihabarashopdotjp 3 years ago
This mod looks tight, but I was wondering, do you really need the extra spring in there? And is it do-able with a square gate as well? Thanks a lot for the vid, can't wait to try it out!
ThatOtherguyX 3 years ago
I did the mod with a GT-Y because I had it on at that time, if you look at the text in the video at 5.20 it says something about the square gate (GT-8F).
The extra spring is there to make it a little harder to move (more resistance) but if you are fine with what it feels like as an original then you don´t have to add the spring.

have a question, what type of stick do japanese street fighter 3 strike cabinet use? sanwa or seimitsu?
RobertMilesMusic 2 years ago
Don't think they started using Sanwa until SFIV, so chances are they used Seimitsu with SF3. I could be wrong, though.
Hayzeuszilla 2 years ago
I have JLF-TP-8Y stick w/ squaregate, could you explain what is the purpose of this Ultimate MOD ? I am guessing it's for a shorter throw which is nice. I have been wanting to do that for a while now because I have trouble doing shoryuken motion on Player-1 side and I think it's cuz the position of my hand has to go farther on P1 side as opposed to P2 side where its just a quick whip of the wrist. Do you know if Sanwa makes a stick that feels like JLF-TP-8Y but comes naturally with short throw?
