@ladev1988 it is an ink, not a powder, because the ink is UV cured by a mercury lamp on the printer head itself which fixes and dries the ink almost instantly there is no need for solvents or anything else meaning prints from this machine are long last and more environmentally friendly. Also because there is no solvent the ink heads don't jam and don't need to be cleaned, it is more expensive to run but colour density and image quality are significantly better than normal wide format printers,
@JaredPolin, Excellent, they use an Océ Arizona the same as the one we have at work (does help that I work for Océ lol) which are awesome :) Always enjoy putting my prints through it :) We've even printed on doors as you say, paper, canvas (on frame or on roller) steel, glass, acrylic, mdf, tiles and our show piece is an electric guitar we took apart and printed on.... And it prints WHITE ink too!! :)
@helthuismartin The Océ Arizona 350GT (which is the model in my office, not sure about theirs) has variable droplet sizes from 6 to 42 picoliters so prints of 1,440 DPI are possible. Text at 6pt is perfectly readable. In quality mode it will print 15.2 square meters an hour and being UV ink is dry to touch as soon as the UV lamp has finished its path, weather resistant and very long lasting with minimal colour and definition fall off
Great door art piece idea, thought very much the same piece for years now. Was excited to hear you bring it up. Made me think Hmm ! Then the light bulb went off!
Thanks, I'll keep the inner thought to myself, since we both know to be unique (BIG) in thought is to be different and different sells BIG! Thanks BRO! FRO ! and
Mr. Taylor, nice work appreciate your efforts to help us lowly photographers!
I used to sell graphic design and print.. we had a Titan printer which would print onto anything under 2" thick. The quality wasn't up to the same standard.. but the first thing we did.. was print onto a door... BOOYA! Seems great minds think alike. Keep up the awesome videos :)
Hey Jared! I was looking at my D3s raw file and noticed that the image size is 4256x2832 pixels. I converted the pixels to inches and came up 17.733x11.8 inches.. so Im guessing that means printing images that are 17.733x11.8 inches will be using the image to its fullest potential?? I would imagine anything larger than that size would start to suffer in sharpness and potentially be fuzzy…
@HaRdCoRePhAn9i6 I have never printed such big sizes such as 30x45s, so I would like to know if a print that size shows any sign of muddiness or fuzziness?
Hey Jared, I live in South Australia, Australia, do you know of anywhere in Australia that has something like this, wasnt sure if you have heard anything, cheers great work lovin you YT
Hey Jared, Wich body would you advise me to buy between the D7000 and D300s, considering I'm startingmaking money with photography and here in canada, D300s is $ 70 more expensive Than The D7000. Thanks a lot and continue your great work!
@JaredPolin I must dis-agree with you there Jared, with all due respect, sometimes you miss a bunch of shots waiting out for a camera, I know I missed a lot when I was waiting to get my D5000
@JaredPolin I can't wait for the D300s replacement because I must get out of the crapy sony a200... So between the D7000 and the D300s, wich one is the best (especially with low light situations) Thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot for the info, would love to see the video when they print your door, the actual printing and then the look when your fix it back in your house, that a really cool idea...very curious to see how it looks.
Wow you go all the way up to Princeton to get prints made, they must be good. I live just across the bridge from you in NJ. I think I'll pay them a visit soon to get my actual film developed.
@sharkman0616 it can print on glass too :) the only think i can't really print on is a mirror as the mercury UV curing lamp shortens it life span when reflected back on itself and they aren't cheap to replace
@JaredPolin jared, i've been recommending the d3100 to all i know who wants to buy a dslr since you always use it in you video and because of your reviews. i have a d5000 right now, i want to know what's your views on this unit.
It would be great if you could dedicate a video (or series) to color management. There are so many factors like color profiles, RGB/CMYK limitations, monitor and device calibration, and how different file formats affect color information. I think this topic is overlooked by a lot of photographers but it's very important to know! Thanks!
Hey nice video, any chance you could do a video going into a bit more details about prints, do you have your own smaller machine at home to do work on or do you always go through someone else. I have just started get some decent stuff and would like to try and start selling prints.
So, Jared...Greg actually explained something but I want to get it one more time :P
I shoot RAW and I edit in Lightroom my RAW file. I shoot with a Nikon D60 (10MP) and I get a RAW file of about 10 MB. After I edit it I save it as the origin file format so it is the same size. But I have to edit some photos in Photoshop too, but I can`t save the files under the same format,I have to save them as PSD. But they take to much space. How do you do it?
don't know if you noticed, but your subscribers got over 10,000 guys !
and that was a kick ass video, new subject, many informations and out there in the field !!! great Jared, now I know where "big ass" prints are made !!
@JaredPolin The contrast range is reduced compared to the monitor, thus reducing contrast of the image. Anyway, this is what I've been able to understand on the subject. I don't calibrate (yet) either, jst because I'm against the fact that to have a well calibrated screen, you need to buy expensive software. Any chance Greg can do a video on this? Thanks ;)
You asked why. The answer to that question is exactly what I posted. Something in the conditions of the shoot dictated that within the combination of the 3 things we can adjust, the iso needed to be that high to guarantee he got the shot.
@jameslcr click over to the video about that photo and it will explain that it was late in the day and i needed to freeze the motion. So 4000 iso to let me get 400th of a second so I could freeze the motion.
@JaredPolin you can freeze that kind of action at lowers shutter speeds than that they were just standing with minimal movement its not like you were trying to capture an f22 raptor flying at 100ft breaking the speed of sound
@JaredPolin It seems to me though that, like shooting in manual mode or in RAW, monitor calibration and ICC profiles are another way of keepin control over the the from start to finish. If your monitor calibration is off, the color could be a little off it's pretty much working against any editing you've done before that.
Also ICC profiles convert the image to the printer color space. This is important because the printer is capable of producing blacks as 'black' as your monitor can.
will they send to germany?

why would you shoot 4000 iso outside daytime?
jameslcr 1 year ago
Not Jared, but let me take a stab at this...
Overcast day means limited light.
3 things we can adjust to expose this shot correctly. Shutter speed, Aperture, ISO.
1) Shutter Speed - Group was moving so need fast enough shutter speed to freeze them.
2) Aperture - Need everyone in focus so cant go too crazy with aperture due to variation in depth from front of group to back of group.
Only thing left to adjust is iso.
justmeemtsuj 1 year ago
@justmeemtsuj im not stupid but ive shot pictures inside in low light and shot them no where near iso 4000 thats extreme
jameslcr 1 year ago
@jameslcr Didn't say you were stupid. :)
You asked why. The answer to that question is exactly what I posted. Something in the conditions of the shoot dictated that within the combination of the 3 things we can adjust, the iso needed to be that high to guarantee he got the shot.
And looking at the shot I'd say he did just that.

When editing, do you soft proof using a specific ICC profile for there printer to ensure exact color reproduction?
Also, how do you calibrate your monitor?
max7164 1 year ago
@max7164 I dont color calibrate my monitor, greg does his, I edit and they print i keep it simple.
JaredPolin 1 year ago
@JaredPolin It seems to me though that, like shooting in manual mode or in RAW, monitor calibration and ICC profiles are another way of keepin control over the the from start to finish. If your monitor calibration is off, the color could be a little off it's pretty much working against any editing you've done before that.
Also ICC profiles convert the image to the printer color space. This is important because the printer is capable of producing blacks as 'black' as your monitor can.
