I was watching the Derby last year and recall the announcer saying "The most exciting 2:00 you'll ever see!" and in my head I laughed. "Secretariat made the greatest 1:59 I have ever seen."
Whats amazing was the size of this horse's heart... And no I'm not talking the intangible kind of heart. It was estimated at 22 lbs!!!! Thats 2.75 times the size of the normal horse heart.
He is not only the symbol of success but he is also the symbol of persistence. There is no other horse which knows he is racing and he has to win but Secretariat. He has ongoing sprint which never ends till the ending post. He rips off the pack he is in knowing he is on home stretch. As a jokey in Turkey i always dreamed to ride a horse like him. I would never ever need to worry about being stuck in the pack trying to find a way out for him. He does it by himself without the jokey's attempt
I gotta show some love for Sham. Ran that race bleeding from the mouth, having lost two teeth in the gate (banged his head on the gate). They don't time anyone other than the winner, but when you consider that Secretariat's time still stands as race/track record, where Sham was when Secretariat finished, and only 2 other horses (Northern Dancer and Monarchos) at or below the 2:00 mark, Sham likely ran the 2nd to 4th fastest race in Derby history, bleeding from the mouth.
@slappymcgroundout Sham's place in history is assured. but you have to wonder if he would have collapsed the same way he did against Sec at Belmont if Sec wasn't in that race? Just wondering.
Yes there are very sad and tragic and shameful aspects to horse racing, and for any sport involving animals. However, there are horses that truly LOVE to run. and to race, and its a magical and majestic thing to witness that aspect of it. I love HORSES, not just horse racing, which I do find enjoyable. I'm far from rich or "elitist" and I enjoy going to the track just to watch the horses run. Betting is just something of an aside when Im at the track. Im really there to watch the horses.
@1:54 the rest of the horses suddenly slow down from a run to a trot in the straight. Either that or Secretariat and Sham are two of the fastest horses in history!
So many racing fan's only seem to remember Secretariat's romp in the 73' Belmont Stakes. But many people forget, Secretariat also set new stakes records in the 73' Kentucky Derby and the 73' Preakness, also. He was the first horse to ever finish the 10f of the Kentucky Derby in under 2:00. Secretariat ran the final 1/4 mile of this Derby in 23 seconds. He ran each of five 1/4 miles faster than the one before in this race!! That's incredible!!
@GBeret83 truly the rarest and probably greatest distinction between Sec and any other horse, even Man O War was the running faster each 1/4.
Side note and just my opinion but Sec literally broke Sham's poor heart, who never raced again after the Belmont. My bet is that he couldn't physically because he tried to run with a God on a day when He felt like running.
For people not familiar with horse's, it's very hard to make a horse run if they don't want to. There is a bad side to racing but what I watch is the incredible heart and spirit of the horses. While Secretariat might be the greatest race horse ever I really come to see the amount of heart and heartbreak with 8 bells. I have mixed feeling about horse racing but no question about these beautiful animals. They were born to run. And some just don't like being second.
Any other year and Sham win's the Triple Crown. I was 10 years old and fell in love With Secretariat and Sham. Sham was a fantastic horse, very fast but he did not have the lungs of Secretariat. Any other year i believe he wins.
@natureboy1313 It wasn't the lungs but the heart. But yes, Sham was the second best horse that year, and if Secretariat hadn't been around, Sham would have been champion.
ppl do forget about sham. had secretariat been born one year later i feel that we would had sham as the triple crown winner in 1973. im not taking anything away from big red, cuz he was the man!!!! my favorite horse ever. just trying to give props to another great horse of 1973.
hopefully we get a horse like secretariat to FINALLY WIN the triple crown. its been what 32-33 years now without a triple crown winner, how sad. :/ in my life time i have never seen the triple crown won.
Can you imagine what Secretariat's time might have been if he got a better start? Despite coming from dead last, at the beginning of the Derby, Secretariat still broke the record at 159.2 Unbelievable!
You know, it may very well be an elitist sport, but that in NO WAY takes away from the awe and wonder this horse inspired. I am a 50 year old woman and one of my most vivid childhood memories is watching these three races. I still tear up watching Secretariet in the Belmont Stakes.
@naomi650 I agree. If anything, giving Sham his due credit only makes Secretariat's accomplishments all the more remarkable because he wasn't just beating up on weak competition a la Big Brown in '08. On the contrary, Sham just might possibly have been the 2nd greatest race horse ever. Just look at his times in the Derby & Preakness.
my horse Tango (his racing name was Shnaps Turn) was related to Secretariat, and Bold Ruler & War Admirl were all in his family too, sadly Tango died July 1, 2009 and i miss him so much theres not a day that goes by without me thinking about these 2 horsies :) <3 I MISS YOU TANGO! love you!! <3 im sad now :(

My dad actually did get to meet Ron Turcotte!! He used to work at the Saratoga Race Course while Secretariat was racing!! He said he was very nice :) Wish i could have met him!!
It was so great to see a movie made of this horse. I've never really been a racing fan (go to the track about twice a year to make my contribution), I was that year.... I'm glad I was alive then to see it, and especially the Belmont. It's incredible that his Derby record still stands almost 40 years later. And the Belmont record? They'll have to scientifically create a horse out of a test tube to break that sucker... To Secretariat, who was something more than a horse that year.

I wish I was alive when he was!!!!! I can't believe any of this!!! I want to actually see pictures of Penny and Secretariat together. It's so sad that he eventually died. :'( but you know, nothing could live forever!!! PRASE TO THE AMAZING, TALENTED,FANTASTIC,LEDGED, SECRETARIAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best horse who ever lived in history :D
There will never be a horse that loved to run as much as "Big Red"... I've always admired the heart of this horse and his love for racing. Although I live in Ky, I've never been a fan of horse racing - I would rather see a horse running free... But, Secretariat loved it! I'm so glad that a movie was made to honor this great athlete. He is truly one of the world's greatest athletes ever. RIP - Secretariat "Big Red"
I just bought the movie and the book, I'm so glad they decided to make a movie so that everyone, even those not into horse racing, could get to know this amazing athlete. What a champion. He is truly inspiring, and always will me.
i just saw the movie of the winner here.Said he sired 600 foals so why was not another traind so well as his sire? One of them could been as good.I would recorn.but he shure was great this horse.
That horse was amazing. He could go from last place to sprinting in front of all the horses. He is still one of the greatest athletes and my greatest hero of all time.
This was my 1st and only Derby. The infield was wall-to-wall party.Stood in line for almost 1 hour to place my $2 wager on him.Watched him from the finish line rail.Another 1 hour to collect $2.20...LOL
@MARKSIBLEYMD You should've saved your ticket! It would be worth who-knows-how-much now as memorabilia; you could've framed it - LOL. You're so lucky, to have seen this great horse run!
Thank you so much for this great video.....I am reading the book and now to watch him win the Kentucky gosh what a thrill.......in every sport there is good and bad people but horse racing is to me the best sport there is.........I just love horses but I never went to see them run. thank you again and happy new year.
I worked at a breeding farm this summer. I watched some sales, and even saw some training. Yes there is a sad side to all aspects of the horse racing industry but its the same with all aspects of the horse world. Yeah horses get hurt and sometimes they recover, other times they dont, but that doesnt mean that the sport itself cant be enjoyed because there are still those moments where everything is good....
I am so longing for a triple crown year again. Think I read that Secretariat's heart was nearly x3 of normal and Sham's nearly x2. Hard to beat genetics like that. Hate any animal abuse, and yes it does happen around racing as well as elsewhere. Hope everyone has watched Curlin take the Dubai World Cup in 2008, also an awesome race.
thank you so much for posting this :) my mom told me about him i finally got to see him in action and not from that disney movie version though they some parts correct :) any ways THANK YOU!!!!!
I really do miss that shot of the classic Churchill Downs. I hate the fact that the spires are now overshadowed on both sides by those hideous expansions.
@RCTPatriot75 I didn't know just how Downs wld look. Too bad the expansions overshadow the twin spires. I'd have thought they wld've tried to avoid that.
Secretariat is the horse whose looks, character and performance captured the heart of a nation as easily as he captured records on a race track. The Perfect Storm of looks, charisma, machismo, endurance, speed and grace, there will never be another like the one and only SUPERHORSE.
The secretariat movie was tepid at best, it did not capture the essence of the big horse and the whole premise of the movie was fiction. Read William Nack's book, its so much better !
I just think that it's funny that Disney actually thinks that they can recreate that. I don't mean that in an offensive way, but when there's a horse that just loves to run like Secretariat, the movie version can't hold a candle to it. Also, I realize that some people believe that "a horse can't love to run" and "horse racing is abuse" and ect., but they have their thoughts and I have mine. I just think of it like other equestrian sports; some people are abusive, some aren't.
horse racing is an elitist sport for foolish rich people who gamble at the expense of the horses and poor workers. long ago it wasnt like this...but it is now. people who support it should be ashamed.
@bradford71us That is solely your opinion, even though it's shared by others. To paint everyone who enjoys watching horses run as foolish or rich is foolish of you, and deeming the sport as elitist is narrow-minded of you. There are plenty of people who get into the sport for money, yes, but there are also those who enjoy it for the thrill of the horses, too. I'm no gambler, and I watch it for the horse racing action alone. You should be ashamed stereotyping people like that. Don't come back.
@cf1970 i work with horses, and im a native kentuckian....so i kinda DO know what im talking about. you clearly have no clue how this stuff works or what horses endure when FORCED to race....or how the political rich people in kentucky are tied in through horse racing (drugs, plain and simple.). you probably dont know any illegal immigrants forced to work in the industry either....
@bradford71us Look, I apologize for any offense I may have caused you. I have my own experience with horse racing, so I don't appreciate you putting words in my mouth. Yes, I DO know about the sad side of racing. My point was that the POSITIVE side of racing is very enjoyable, but I am not going to ignore the very valid points that you make; it is tragic the bad things that happen away from the glare of the cameras and crowds; there's no denying that they need to be fixed, and right NOW.
@cf1970 my original statement was my perspective only. i understand your love, especially of horses. hopefully people like yourself are the elements of change, because those of us that work with horses and live in kentucky cant make those changes. here, the wealthy control the industry and outside of outside influence there will be no change.
I agree with you. Of course there is a sad point to horse racing, but if we were to only see negative things and never enjoy what we are given, how would we live XD
Of course I've seen and heard things about horse racing, and I thought it was horrible! But I love to watch horses run. My horse loves to run. Whether I ride him or not, he always wants to go faster, and I think it's beautiful to watch these horses run! Well, when they are happy with it.
@bradford71us I agree with both of you...it has changed a lot since it first started. I enjoy watching it but at the same time I don't like it because my now 20 year old OTTB has extremely stocked up back legs that I have to watch out for due to having his legs shocked when he used to run.
cf1970 I figured you work with horses. I have some experience with that, too. I appeciate your comments and I have mixed feelings about racing. I love the horses but I don't love the industry. There is nothing like a Thorobred.
@cf1970 Watching Zenyatta made me a fan of horse racing. too bad she lost but still winning 19 straight is awesome.
anyway I knew the magnitude of the race I turned it on and watched it. I also watched the races before it and I think I am going to start watching them more often, it was fun.
Word in the publishing world is that there's a stunning novel coming ... where Big Red has a moving presence. It's not about Secretariat, per se, but the story reverberates between the American Civil War and the end of the Vietnam War....1973...when ...well you can imagine the rest....I think the title is
dear cf1970, my wife's family live about 2 miles from Ron Turcotte. Your videos are all great, thank you very much for allowing all to see this great history.
@brucerigby Thank you for the nice comments. It's been a pleasure to share videos with everyone, and interacting with kind folks such as yourself. I'd really like to meet Mr. Turcotte someday and talk to him about some things; it'd be a thrill.
@elcash53 - this must be an amazing day, wish I was there, but I have just the videos and the reminding to the big red secretariat, beloved and never forget
I realize thoroughbred horse racing has a rich history and specific requirements, but my mind was thinking of how as a "rich man's" elitist sport how silly to have a designated jockey ride it - reminds me of how rich have in many instances have others fight their fights. I'd like to see the owners ride their own horses (haha) or wear different outfits. Say a poncho clad man with no name , a native american warrior, a mongel raider look etc... (kidding)
The movie was awesome. If you don't get a lump in your throat and tears in your eyes watching this horse, you're not human. Michael Jordan, nope...Babe Ruth, nope, Wayne Gretsky, nope...Michael Phelps, nope................SECRETARTIAT, YES!
They should definitely make a movie on Native Diver also! He broke records way beyond a 2-year-old. His story is incredible. He loved to race, is a Hall of Famer, and buried at the finish line at Hollywood Park. When he died, all mourned. What a beauty.
i have a feeling disney should not have been the team to take on this movie based on the limited reiews i have read from the few people who have already seen it. it's the right story to garner oscar attention if done correctly.
Sham was a great horse that happened to run at the wrong time. Had it not been for Big Red, he woulda' had the Triple Crown. Kinda like Ali and Frazier.
@roquey44 so true. sham WAS a great horse. his performance in every race in '73, he was always right with secretariat (till he would just turn it on) and way ahead of all the other boys. how does your own greatness shine when you've got the unfortunate circumstance to run against the greatest ever?
@aenemated If Sham would have been born on any other year than 1970, he would have been a triple crown winner for sure. You're right, he got unlucky being three in the same year as Secretariat. Because of it, he's horrible over-looked.
Wow is all i can say . What an amazing horse!! I heard about the movie and decided to do resourch on Secretariat and that is truly one amazing horse i wish i had one i love them so much!!
Such an amazing example of raw power and grace! I've seen this footage hundreds of times and know how it all ended up but every time I watch this, I STILL hold my breath and think "Go, Secretariat...come on...GO!" haha
What a raw deal Sham got! Any other year and he's a lock for the triple crown. Unfortunately for him he was the same age as the greatest horse of all time.
@Tampaslice yes, I was thinking the same thing. I feel for Sham's owner and trainers, any other year he would have been famous, now he is just forgotten.
When I was a kid i loved the horse Sham.Little did i know what a super horse Secretariat would become. It's a real sad that Sham wasn't remembered for being such a great horse that he was.
Shame on you. Don't deride Mrs. Tweedy with such crude names, or any names for that matter. Do some actual RESEARCH on the subject and you'll find that it was due to taxes owed on the family farm after her father's death that forced them to syndicate Secretariat. You can blame the the good ol' IRS for that travesty! It still ticks me off.
Like the old saying goes: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't anything at all." It works. You'll be a much happier person in the end, trust me.
@cf1970 I agree with you. Why is it that some people just have to find something bad in everything that is good. Secretariat was a great horse, and Mrs. Tweedy a wonderful person. Had to be to nurture such a great horse. At Belmont, Ron Turcotte said after the race, "the horse did it all my himself, I was just along for the ride."
@cf1970 You're absolutely right, but what do you expect from a person whose name is "Mydickitches1"? Thanks for posting all the great Secretariat races.
@Mydickitches1 You should be ashamed for saying such a thing about her. Ms. Chenery has been nothing but a LADY. She has been most generous with her money, time and support of horse racing. She still returns (and ronnie also) to the Derby and TC races and always has time for interviews and sign for fans. Even in her 80's with some health issues still runs his website and signs and anwsers questions from fans. It is her and her peers/generation that we owe so much to. Look what become of yours.

RIP - Secretariat "Big Red"
maryleamiller 11 months ago
I just bought the movie and the book, I'm so glad they decided to make a movie so that everyone, even those not into horse racing, could get to know this amazing athlete. What a champion. He is truly inspiring, and always will me.

i just saw the movie of the winner here.Said he sired 600 foals so why was not another traind so well as his sire? One of them could been as good.I would recorn.but he shure was great this horse.

RAV52 1 year ago
The secretariat movie was tepid at best, it did not capture the essence of the big horse and the whole premise of the movie was fiction. Read William Nack's book, its so much better !
imaliberal 1 year ago
I just think that it's funny that Disney actually thinks that they can recreate that. I don't mean that in an offensive way, but when there's a horse that just loves to run like Secretariat, the movie version can't hold a candle to it. Also, I realize that some people believe that "a horse can't love to run" and "horse racing is abuse" and ect., but they have their thoughts and I have mine. I just think of it like other equestrian sports; some people are abusive, some aren't.
Princeshelby 1 year ago
horse racing is an elitist sport for foolish rich people who gamble at the expense of the horses and poor workers. long ago it wasnt like this...but it is now. people who support it should be ashamed.
bradford71us 1 year ago
@bradford71us That is solely your opinion, even though it's shared by others. To paint everyone who enjoys watching horses run as foolish or rich is foolish of you, and deeming the sport as elitist is narrow-minded of you. There are plenty of people who get into the sport for money, yes, but there are also those who enjoy it for the thrill of the horses, too. I'm no gambler, and I watch it for the horse racing action alone. You should be ashamed stereotyping people like that. Don't come back.
cf1970 1 year ago
@cf1970 i work with horses, and im a native kentuckian....so i kinda DO know what im talking about. you clearly have no clue how this stuff works or what horses endure when FORCED to race....or how the political rich people in kentucky are tied in through horse racing (drugs, plain and simple.). you probably dont know any illegal immigrants forced to work in the industry either....
bradford71us 1 year ago
@bradford71us Look, I apologize for any offense I may have caused you. I have my own experience with horse racing, so I don't appreciate you putting words in my mouth. Yes, I DO know about the sad side of racing. My point was that the POSITIVE side of racing is very enjoyable, but I am not going to ignore the very valid points that you make; it is tragic the bad things that happen away from the glare of the cameras and crowds; there's no denying that they need to be fixed, and right NOW.
Peace.
cf1970 1 year ago
@cf1970 my original statement was my perspective only. i understand your love, especially of horses. hopefully people like yourself are the elements of change, because those of us that work with horses and live in kentucky cant make those changes. here, the wealthy control the industry and outside of outside influence there will be no change.
bradford71us 1 year ago
@cf1970
Naessly 8 months ago
@bradford71us I agree with both of you...it has changed a lot since it first started. I enjoy watching it but at the same time I don't like it because my now 20 year old OTTB has extremely stocked up back legs that I have to watch out for due to having his legs shocked when he used to run.
EquineEthic1 1 year ago
cf1970 I figured you work with horses. I have some experience with that, too. I appeciate your comments and I have mixed feelings about racing. I love the horses but I don't love the industry. There is nothing like a Thorobred.

Word in the publishing world is that there's a stunning novel coming ... where Big Red has a moving presence. Nice exciting race.
(kidding)
majik2hanz 1 year ago
gotta give the jockey a lot of credit for that ride, great strategy-

They should definitely make a movie on Native Diver also! He broke records way beyond a 2-year-old. His story is incredible. He loved to race, is a Hall of Famer, and buried at the finish line at Hollywood Park. When he died, all mourned. What a beauty.

Sham was a great horse that happened to run at the wrong time. Had it not been for Big Red, he woulda' had the Triple Crown. Kinda like Ali and Frazier.
roquey44 1 year ago
@roquey44 so true. sham WAS a great horse. his performance in every race in '73, he was always right with secretariat (till he would just turn it on) and way ahead of all the other boys. how does your own greatness shine when you've got the unfortunate circumstance to run against the greatest ever?
aenemated 1 year ago
@aenemated If Sham would have been born on any other year than 1970, he would have been a triple crown winner for sure. You're right, he got unlucky being three in the same year as Secretariat. Because of it, he's horrible over-looked.

Penny Tweedy was a moneywhore who should have run Secretariat as a four year old.
Mydickitches1 1 year ago
Shame on you. Don't deride Mrs. Tweedy with such crude names, or any names for that matter. Do some actual RESEARCH on the subject and you'll find that it was due to taxes owed on the family farm after her father's death that forced them to syndicate Secretariat. You can blame the the good ol' IRS for that travesty! It still ticks me off.
Like the old saying goes: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't anything at all." It works. You'll be a much happier person in the end, trust me.
cf1970 1 year ago
@cf1970 I agree with you. Why is it that some people just have to find something bad in everything that is good. Secretariat was a great horse, and Mrs. Tweedy a wonderful person. Had to be to nurture such a great horse. At Belmont, Ron Turcotte said after the race, "the horse did it all my himself, I was just along for the ride."
