  • never gets old

  • man I love this song...

  • Gord is no Quitter that is for sure.....;) Love his Music...

  • This song gives such chills being a sailor myself. Even in the most advanced, watertight warship a storm gone bad can sink a it in a blink of an eye. We ported in but the cruiser with us wasnt so lucky, she was making full power 30kts but was only making 7kts against the storm. After the storm we found she suffered severe hull fractures and lost her radar and radio antanna's.

  • What a fine song in honour of those who have "gone down to the sea in ships".

  • hey fuck u man they were just espressing their enthusiasm for a great artist and a great song

  • @crackerbox53 Your class is showing. It's happy hour somewhere.

  • I would hesitate to holler and whoop at such a sad song. lol

  • Sometimes when a song like this comes on,no matter wat the circumstance,U should have RESPECT,a word some of the people in our society does not have.

  • 22 people have no souls.

  • And let's take the artist out of the equation for a moment. You have to wonder how/where/in what hole in the ground these people were raised in who can scream right into someone's ear a foot away. What should happen is that the one screamer should be pounced on and beaten senseless by the half-deaf people surrounding him/her. In what other situation would a person DARE scream into someone else's ears? LOL think about it. It's totally disturbed behavior

  • Stupid (I assume drunk) idiots. I wonder how artists do it without stopping and saying "Hey, I'd like to sing for you but your ruining my music". "Shut up or I'll leave".

  • @rayb532 On the contrary, artists love all that hootin and hollering because they have sung the songs a million times.

  • Love the guy...And as far as a few 'whoos'...maybe the poor guy just doesn't get out very often. Bet you didn't think of that now did ya? okay okay yeah...after 10 whoo's. Gordon is a treasure!

  • This can't be Gordon Lightfoot...

  • I live near the shores of Lake Superior, and from what I hear from the fisherman, and amateur anglers, it's NO joke. It's basically , an inland sea.

  • It's still an nice song of a story of a ship in it's crew. Cool music from the 70's.

  • Wow!!! He gets me everytime!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think one can sing,

    Pretty much any old words,

To the mel o dy this song ex hibits

If you think I am kidding

    Just give it a try...

andYOU'll be amazed at the RE- sults.

  • Those feral idiots who are screaming and whistling in the crowd are absolutely disgraceful. Go see the 1979 crowd and see some class on youtube: Q0DqPSF2fyo

  • grissom said it all!

  • Grissom, i couldnt agree with you more.

  • God's speed to the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

  • I agree with you there. Need to be more respectful. Especially to a song like this one.

  • 50+ years this legend has been dedicating his life and craft to his fans. Enjoy him while he remains among us. He's hurting badly since Terry passed on and I don't think he'll be touring much longer. And I agree with the comment about how real fabs sat in respectful quiet while he played and didn't whoop and holler like fools. This isn't a song about bar-hopping, it's a testament to men who died doing what they did best.

  • Every SINGLE time I hear this song, I can't help but picture in my mind exactly what is transpiring, like a movie in my mind. Mr. Lightfoot tells one hell of a story

  • The best maritine ballard ever written ! Thanks Gord ! R.I.P. Red and Terry !!

  • @jrushmen agreed

gord is getting on now but still glad for better or worse he is still on the road

  • SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU BASTARDS ! ! !....YOUR MAKING ALL SOUTHERN LOOK/SOUND EVEN WORSE THAN WE ALREADY ARE ! ! !....

  • respect

  • In the 70s they didn't server alcohol during the shows except out in Las Vegas, and many of the concert goers back then would pass the joint until everyone in the house was high, and pretty much mellowed out, and ready for some good old fashioned Gordon Lightfoot.

  • Yo! 1938!...It's Never Too Late...All The Best Gordy!

  • I now live in texas but was born in st paul, mn then moved to eau claire wisc and have been to lake superior many times....it is to meloncoly...love this ballad

  • I agree totally with GrissomLovesSara, on such a somber ballad of a tragedy like the Fitz people should be riveted!!

  • I agree totally with GrissomLovesSara!!

  • why bash the audience for making noise? i think every artist appreciates audience being alive and involved and not bored and indifferent... however, i have been next to a person who cheered way too much.. that can be irritating

  • @caltexjohn Do you know what this song is about? It's a tribute to the men who lost their lives. REAL PEOPLE. And this morons are whooping and hollering because they've seen other morons whoop and holler. Mindless drones who can't even listen to what he is singing about.

  • @caltexjohn Learn the Legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald. You will know why this is more like an opera or some songbird ballad.

  • Those whooping Atlantans are nothing, except f****** idiots.

  • SING SING I LOVE IT

  • Gordon Lightfoot is the most underrated performer of our time. Him and Neil Diamond.

  • @pebrooks123123 That may be true (in the 21st Century), but back in my time, THEY RULED!!!

  • I agree with you, Grissom and Cocolossal. I had to sit through a James Taylor concert with some stupid whistler/screamer behind me the whole concert. It ruins the experience for those of us that love the music for the music, and not for the attention we can get by screaming and whistling. Go NUTS after the song, but let the artist perform, for God's sake...........

  • hmmm

  • hmm

  • Absolute class act. I agree it's a shame the audience couldn't restrain themselves. How hard is it to just sit back, be silent and soak up the magic?

  • Nice Gibson 12 string.

  • Damnit, people in the audience just STFU. Honestly, just listen to this wonder you dumb drunks.

  • Wooooooooow.

  • anybody that says this song suck can go fuck themselves. I got an edmund fitzgerald shirt on right now. RIP to the 29 who didnt come back.

  • I remember my dad taking me down to the river and showing me the big fitz. I was young, lived in Oswego NY on lake ontario

  • He underwent surgery for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, and he remained in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Lightfoot endured a six-week coma and a tracheotomy, and he underwent four surgical operations.

  • cause I stumbled on it, and I'm a glutton for punishment. I do think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like it, so it's clearly my fault, not Gordon's. I can admit it.

  • This song makes me want to gouge my ears out. Just my opinion.

  • @flyoverangel then why are you listening to it?

  • This in not just entertainment. This was the only tribute to the 29 who died in the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It's similiar to what Americans used to call a prayer. A great era in American Music. Where's the next generation, what about the oil spill? This is one reason of many the country we live in is perseived as spoiled. There wasn't any nuturing of our old unique american art form. Just buy another Picasso that will show them we care?

  • @MrFalconford Gordon Lightfoot is Canadian sir. Would make that a great era in 'Canadian' music. There is a world outside the U.S. borders, no offense.

  • There is absolutely nothing glamorous about getting old.

  • @dalianreport88 Actually, you can get old with grace.

  • @mammanitsa as long as grace puts up with you.

  • @dalianreport88 That may be true but many people like Gordon carry dignity with them for the rest of their lives.

  • The Edmund Fitzgerald was a "Real Boat" & True Story for those who might not know & I myself didn't until a few years ago & I've heard this song many times, once U hear the story & listen to the song it's a touching tribute to those who were lost that day, read about it U will see....

  • Has anyone heard Van Dieman's Land, by Bobbie Sands? I think he must have based it on Gordon's song, because it's tune is identical.

  • RIP GORDON you will be missed

..hes so fucked up on coke right now omg

  • RIP GORDON you will be missed

  • @krinkles3productions Yikes. News must travel slow up your way.

  • Beautiful.

  • I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

  • Great talent, great song but I wish the idiot that keep oooing at the beginning of the song would shut the f**k up.

  • rip gordon lightfoot. U were one of the best!!

  • @AntaresInScorpius dude he's still alive

  • @AntaresInScorpius Dude your a moron he lives

  • nevermind the ship , he looks kinda wrecked himself!!

  • only singer to rival Louis Armstrong.

  • @nubetuber51 actually no only singer better then Louis Armstrong.

  • if you listen to the 70's version on youtube, the audience sits in respectful silence. No live music performance these days is allowed to be beautiful. Just screaming, hollering, whistling, whooping, shrieking. I don't understand it. I mean whoever whooo'd after 'crew and good captain well seasoned' should be escorted OUT. Since when is actually listening to a song not good enough. Applause is for AFTER the song

  • @GrissomLovesSara That's not true, in Japan the audience is stone silent throughout any show they watch - more so or less given the genre.

  • @GrissomLovesSara I'm with you, it's so disrespectful. Particularly on this song.

  • @dougww1ectebow Atlanta has a bunch of stupid hillbillies, drunks clueless people and ranks pretty low in education. I live about an hour away and try to stay away from Atlanta as much as possible. Garrison Keillor came to Atlanta to do his radio show and was harrassed by drunks at Chastain, he said he would never come back to Atlanta.

  • @Lockemeister I guess thats what happens when brothers an sisters mate..I also now live not far from Atlanta and education is poor.

  • @Renegade4860 yes, and then they drink booze...

  • @Lockemeister There are no "hillbillies" in Atlanta. They moved out ages ago and live about an hour out of town. No hillbilly ventures inside 285 after dark. Yes. Atlanta ranks very low in education. This rating is principally due to the minorities that make up most of the population. If you rank the education of those who live an hour away it is above average. Chastain is a horrible venue. Horrible. Fun place but the limit placed on decibels allowed is ridiculous.

  • @GrissomLovesSara I agree with you ,except as disrespectful as the timing was I think the hootin' and hollerin is for the singing legend himself. I don't think it was meant in a fouled sense for the Big Fitz and her crew. May they Rest In Peace.

  • @GrissomLovesSara i agree with you. those that think its ok to do those things should be told to leave its the same in theaters when pple talk durring a movie or play.

  • @GrissomLovesSara Right on!!!

  • @GrissomLovesSara Couldn't agree more.

  • @GrissomLovesSara Stupid southerners have no respect...

  • @GrissomLovesSara i agree u with man

  • @GrissomLovesSara english audiances are like that. they sht the fk up until its their turn. i have a recording of a Led Zeppellin show at the Royal Albert hall where after black dog it was total silence for about 5 seconds and then an eruption of clapping not a bunch of hollering and whistling and generally making assess of themselves like they do here. they show respect. audiances here are a mob of dumb asses. save that shit for the Motly crue shows.

  • @GrissomLovesSara

Amen, ask Terry Clements if this is not so. People have changed, the rudeness and feeling of entitlement have made going to concerts unpleasant. Serving of alcohol has made it worse.

This same phenomenon is present in the people standing on golf tees during tournaments who are hollering and screaming a millisecond before the club hits the ball and then shouts "Go in the hole". How stupid.

  • @GrissomLovesSara

Amen, my friend. I'm glad there are others who realize this as well.

  • @GrissomLovesSara you are so right

  • @GrissomLovesSara I could not agree more. We (me, principally) have given up on live concerts because the crowds are such assholes. How could anyone think it is okay to talk all the while the guy I spent my money to hear and see is singing. It has gotten way out of hand. The rudeness and hooray-for-me-and-fuck you attitude has made for a miserable atmosphere for those of us who came to hear the singer.

  • @GrissomLovesSara If the majority of ppl were more older at this concert there probably wouldve been a bigger show of respect. But it sounds to me like all of the ppl shouting are stupid unrespectful drunk younger ppl. Probably in their late 20's.

  • @GrissomLovesSara Great comment Sara - I really despair of people who attend concerts of great lyricists and clearly do not have the slightest understanding of the song......

  • @GrissomLovesSara I hear you...I get it...but unfortunately the times they are changing-- as they always have been as we go about our daily lives....they are slow and steady and alas they creep upon us ...stick with what you know and love and leave the rest behind...we can't control the masses

  • @nochannel123 Some changes should be objected to. I've stopped going to concerts because they are a completely torturous experience. Imagine paying $100 to have someone deafen you in one or both ears! I'm sure there are artists who don't like the screaming - there was one who actually said as much, can't remember who - but, sadly, not enough object to make a difference. Ah well, thankfully, concerts are not mandatory so I can save my money and my hearing!

  • god's gift gordon and celine to us all. just be nice

  • this so irish

  • I have to say that this song actually seems better when he sings it now as on old man! The voice fits the lyrics SO well like he's telling telling a story of long ago.

  • Gordon Lightfoot will be played in homes in Canada for eternity! How bout that, not too many other musicians can stand next to that!!!

  • Gordon Lightfoot will be played in homes in Canada for eternity! How bout that, not too many other musicians can stand next to that!!!

  • 11/17/10 Happy birthday Gordie!!

  • he just came to missouri not to long ago

  • RIP Crew of the Fitz.

  • God bless you Gordon! I finally heard you live in Utah about 10 years ago! I'd always wanted to hear you! Thanks!!

    35th Anniversary of the Edmund.

I'm from Traverse City...this song has always touched my heart. I've been in Lake Superior in July...freaking cold! Like ice!

I can't imagine those poor sailers--November...I hope it was peaceful after their passing...God bless them and their families! And God Bless Gordon Lightfoot for memorializing these men! And their experience.

  • @CayceHobie always good to see a fellow michigander on here.

  • he was such a strong looking man, funny to see what age does to all of us!

  • funny to see him how, being old....he was such a big strong man.........

  • Did you know...... that today is the anniversary of the Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald?

Memorialized in song, the ore ship Edmund Fitzgerald sank on this date in 1975 with all 29 of its crew. The ship vanished during a storm on Lake Superior.

  • @StLouisEarl yup, and easy to remember as well. The day before Veteran's Day.

  • no cotton candy here ladies and gentleman,MR.Lightfoot's music is still as relevant now as it was then,a true artist in every since of the word.

  • thanks gord, screw those bastards. they'll be seniors some day. we'll see what they sound like then, if they're even living.

  • Don't know how Gord kept his face straight with that drummer tryin' to bust his eardrum!

  • I GREW UP LISTENING TO GORGON LIGHTFOOT , ITS A MEMORY I HAVE OF MY FATHER AND I , TOGETHER....I LOVE GORDON AND ALL OF HIS BEAUTIFULLY HAUNTING SONGS , THE MAN IS A GENIUS AS WELL AS A LEGEND..I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANOTHER MAKE OR WRITE MUSIC LIKE THIS..SEMPER FI!! GORDON!!!MAY YOUR MUSIC REACH GENERATIONS!!

  • Gordon Lightfoot is Canada's gift to the world. Celine Dion is Canada's punishment to the world.

  • @enisorian HA! We keep giving her to Vegas and they keep sending the bitch back! Renee needs to keep his hands off the cocktail waitresses!

  • Not sure I like your 'post' or your version of the concert. I saw him in concert last year. It wasn't my first exposure. Gordon almost lost his life. We are fortunate to still his talent with us. I will not give your video a thumbs up because I think it does a great INJUSTICE to GORDON....and your 'explanation' is certainly lacking. SHAME ON YOU !! LONG LIVE GORDON. HE IS NOT WASTING AWAY.......perhaps we should say that about you and your 22 postings??

  • He's still kickin' :D

  • I remember when this happened...going to be 35 years come a few weeks

  • a beautiful, pure voice for all time.

  • LEGEND!

  • That was really good the way Gorden did this song in concert. Sounds just like the record. But I didn't hear anyone on synthezier this time.

  • awesome, this songs about my area, everybody in the sault knows this song

  • i'm the king for spotting his talent

  • Simply put.... Awesome!!!

  • God bless all sailors who have sailed those mighty freshwater seas!

  • i cant believe i missed out on $14 tickets in my town of Augusta......

  • Edmund Fitzgerald has such a lovely voice. I've always been a big fan.

  • I liked the song about the ghost better. LOL

  • Gordon Lightfoot certainly scored 1 of the 10 greatest musical ballads of any order with "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.

  • "jcsuperstar714

What is really great is Gordon stuck with musicians for the most part. The guys playing here still play with him and have been with him since about 1970".......the most notable exception of course is Jim Gordon. He had some rather severe emotional problems that ultimately led to him murdering his mother. As far as I know he's still in prison.

  • @3rdinfantrygrunt i would hope he got the death penalty

  • Excellent singing and playing. Thanks to God we've all been able to experience Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks for all of the great sound Gordon. Words cannot describe all of the feelings that this man has enabled thru the vehicle of his talents throughout the years. He is due respect and admiration. Once again. Thanks Gordon for all of the great sounds!

  • @Unquenchableone

As a kid growing up in Canada I could say this isn't just a great song by a legendary artist but something like a sound track to life, the very background music of my culture and my own journeys.

  • I've gotta see Gordon Lightfoot the next time he tours near Memphis. He's got so much more talent than those other musicians that recorded his songs.

  • sounds like christy moores back home derry anyone think

  • @johnfitz70 .You are right. The late Bobby Sands wrote Back home in Derry, and Christy Moore sang it.

  • In 1000 years this will still be a great song.

  • he's created an un-criticizeable tradtional song here....i mean like national anthems and 'amzing grace'...proud to be his contemporary. if you don't well up at this song, you've never been on the lakes or oceans with the knowledge that (cell phone reception or not) you're at the mercy of nature, and she cares not for you.

  • still sounds great after all these years....

  • A beautifully haunting masterpiece!

  • Gordon is Timeless !!! I saw him in 2005 in Torrington Ct @ the Warner Theatre,Had near front row seats,He started out rusty as and old ships hull but man at the end he was spot on..BIG RESPECT for the MAN !!@ Paladino SPOT ON !! after the show I waited outside and met him and he signed my Takamimi Cutaway,A truly great evening..and a truly GREAT man..

  • don't cut Gordy short,I'm sure he could write a good war anthem under the right circumstances

  • WHO DARES CRITIZE GORDY?

  • God inspired song

  • I wonder if it gets depressing to sing a sad song like this over and over.

  • @tryithere

I have been playing this song on my 12 string since fall of 1976, when the songbook to the record came out. It's generally the 2nd song I play when I drag the guitar out, rarely do I NOT play it and believe me, I enjoy it now much more than 34 yrs. ago. It never depresses me, in fact I feel a sense of pride that my favorite artist left this legacy to the lost men. They probably would be forgotten had it not been for this song, or just another shipwreck in the Great Lakes.

  • Gordon, we, in the USA are honored to be your neighbor. You have brought beauty and peace to this world.

    thank you

  • Despite that this is a good song, one of the best too, but I kind of prefer some other videos on Youtube with this song. I noticed the recording quality wasn't too good, but I still appreciate it.

  • I've been a hard rocker/blues guitarist since 75 (age 14) and I remember listening to "If you can read my mind" and "Sundown" in secret. I couldn't tell any of my party/guitarist friends. Hell no, they would have kicked my ass in. Through the years I've learned to write songs and Gordon has really helped me in the process. Thank you Gordon from the bottom of my heart! A real musician, song writer and person.

  • @ChicagoBoomBoom I could't agree more.I went through the same thing with my band mates.Cat Stevens was also a big infuence on me.

  • @ChicagoBoomBoom

Isn't cool! To see soimething that takes you for a loop... like this guy?

What? I'm a blues guy and rock with that scale...yet, I does this this

I know? It just takes you for loop?

  • How could anyone give this a thumbs down.

  • This is such a good song. THis is up there as my 2nd favorite song, behind Marty Robbin's Ballad of the Alamo.

  • i have the summertime dream album but love this live recording.a pity gordon will probably never tour australia again.the music legacy is fantastic though.

  • I totally agree with palidino444 he is awsome!

  • Gord is one of the most underatted lyricists ever. He is special!!!

  • yea gordy heavyarm he is really a good artist

  • A classic!!! God Bless Gordon!!!

  • He is looking old now, huh? Don't even recognize him here. But I echo Paladino's sentiments.

  • this song gives me goosebumps, its just so great

  • Excellent!!

  • Do you think he ever gets tired of singing this?

  • what a cool song

  • A classic!!! God Bless Gordon and the men on the Edmunds Fitzgerald!!!

  • looked like his fly was down

  • You were hoping?

  • My second-fave GL song, after Sundown. Good stuff.
