I seriously cant image the Persians upkeeping 800,000+ soldiers on the move. There is no need for the much soldier and they would spread their troops out all over their empire, not just in that area. Why would they deploy millions on couple of thousands of Greeks? The modern estimate are 30,000-300,000.

And the Persians weren't stupid, but Xerxes was, he sent 300,000 to Thermopylae, and it was being defended by 300 Spartans + ~4,000-6,000 other soldiers. They probably would have kept throwing troops to the slaughter if it wasnt for Ephialtes telling Xerxes of the back path through the mountains.
