renji's bankai and ikkaku's are mean weapons man...but then, Ichigo's dad said, captain class shinigami have to control the size of their zanpahkutos, so i guess, the looks and size are just for show, xD

Well, it depends on the person, for example Ichigos Bankai is compressed power, while Ikkakus is an outward show of that power, so Ichigo's actual abilities are increased but theres no major changes to his looks.

However Ikkakus or Renjis own abilities stay the same but they get something big to fight with them or something along those lines.
