The orange colour usually indicates poisonous animal. When it's a baby it may very well be an easy target to predators - that way it indicates to them "I'm not eatable".
They are colored to mimick a local poisonous snake (In Panama and Costa Rica) then since they're mostly nocturnal and when adults (as one of the biggest milk snakes) they use the black to absorb sun (its relatively cool there) and hide at night, since they mostly just overpower things for food. i just got my leo a month or so ago and the tail was white in some spots but now its a light purple its really cool how the colours change so quick cant wait till a year i want to c its colours then

Hey brian, I have a 6 month old honduran milksnake and it hasnt fed for about a month. It usally eats frozen/thawed w/o a problem but now it just isnt interested. I dont mind feeding live (I already do with my ball python) But the store I buy from doesnt sell live fuzzies or pinkies. I've searched but cant find any stores that do. I believe the colour change in Bismark ringed pythons is aposematism. Aposematism is where animals sport bright colours to do deter predators, like ladybugs, butterflies and coral snakes. The animals may become more dull as they reach adult size because not many animals are gonna mess with an adult python! Great show guys, keep it up.

As for snake colours, the babies are so vibrant to prevent predators from eating them, like most poisonous caterpillars and frogs! As they are older they fade to become camouflage, being big enough to potentially fight.

My weirdest Xmas present was a few years ago when I was still married to my ex. We went to my ex wife's grandma's house for Christmas with her side of the family. So many adults are scared of reptiles, but watching little kids do what they themselves are scared of sometimes has a big effect. ~ Anyway, I never thought about snakes changing colors. I think the bright striping on that banded orange and black baby snake is just a defense sort of thing, to try and look like it might be poisonous, and to seem un-tasty. Also, the end of that Xmas skit was... special. Josh might just outcreep chewy with those nipple-thingers.
What about how scarlet kingsnakes have white rings when they're born and they change to yellow as they mature??? It doesn't seem like it would make much of a difference.
I must say like a few others have already said. I think that when they are young they are bright colored because it is too scare away predators, in the wild when something is of very bright color it usually means that it is bad to eat! When they are adults, they are much bigger and can defend themselves much better! That is in my opinion why they go through such massive color changes!

I think some reptiles are brightly colored as babies to appear posionous to predators like birds.They loose that color as adults when they are larger and higher up the food chain.
The reason why Bismark ring pythons are bright orange/black is to probably fool predators into thinking they're poisonous or venomous. If they're in an environment where it's more beneficial to move around a lot in search of food, it would make sense for them to try and fool predators into thinking they're toxic in some way, so they can go about their business without too much worry.
@seeya205 yeah BHB does an awesome job, i recently got a female pastel ball from them, and shes awesome, still tweeking the temps and humidity a bit but shes active and eating so i think im on the right path. cant wait for summer when she goes to the warm side instead of the cool side more

Milk snakes are not venomous, and the ones I've owned don't bite much to begin with. Coral snakes are venomous, though. The milk snake has a similar color pattern to the coral snake, which helps to deter animals that may want to eat it. You can tell the difference by their banding pattern. "Red to yellow, kill a fellow. Red to black, venom lack." I would suggest you study more about snakes in general before you buy one. For example, poison is different than venom.
Ine time i had a dwarf hamster then i got another he was diferent from the start and i walk in and one hamster had eaten the other ones head of and the hamster looked like the joker and by the way i my dad got a touch activated electric peper shaker from my grandma

Not really wierd.. But I gave my brother an Xbox 360 for x-mas one here. But it was actually only the box with a bottle of Tequila inside wrapped in towels so it wouldn't shake around. I found the bottle of Tequila was about the same weight as an Xbox 360 so it had a good affect. He was still happy in the end.

QOFW: One year my friends and I got our friend various sizes of underwear. Starting with XXXXXL panties, going down the different types ending with a gstring. She took it in good humour and tried all of them on over her pants. We were all in stitches from laughing so hard.
As for snake colours, the babies are so vibrant to prevent predators from eating them, like most poisonous caterpillars and frogs! As they are older they fade to become camouflage, being big enough to potentially fight.

My weirdest Xmas present was a few years ago when I was still married to my ex. We went to my ex wife's grandma's house for Christmas with her side of the family. We were newly-weds so all eyes were on us...especially we opened the gift from her grandmother (68 years old at the time) and found both a gift card to Victoria's Secret, and also a local "novelty" store....I can't describe how embarrassed I was in front of all my new inlaws...

I think it would be neat to see an episode that features children who are used to handling snakes. So many adults are scared of reptiles, but watching little kids do what they themselves are scared of sometimes has a big effect. ~ Anyway, I never thought about snakes changing colors. That was really interesting. And I laughed all the way through the second half of this episode. I can always count on you guys to make me smile. Thank you for that, the smile that is.

Good topic! Hope you will also do one on the different Ball Python morphs. I've been reading a little about how someof those get lighter or darker as the snakes get older; especially the ones with yellow in them.

I think the bright striping on that banded orange and black baby snake is just a defense sort of thing, to try and look like it might be poisonous, and to seem un-tasty. Also, the end of that Xmas skit was... special. Josh might just outcreep chewy with those nipple-thingers.

I must say like a few others have already said. I think that when they are young they are bright colored because it is too scare away predators, in the wild when something is of very bright color it usually means that it is bad to eat! When they are adults, they are much bigger and can defend themselves much better! That is in my opinion why they go through such massive color changes!

I think some reptiles are brightly colored as babies to appear posionous to predators like birds.They loose that color as adults when they are larger and higher up the food chain.

The reason why Bismark ring pythons are bright orange/black is to probably fool predators into thinking they're poisonous or venomous. If they're in an environment where it's more beneficial to move around a lot in search of food, it would make sense for them to try and fool predators into thinking they're toxic in some way, so they can go about their business without too much worry.

Milk snakes are not venomous, and the ones I've owned don't bite much to begin with. Coral snakes are venomous, though. The milk snake has a similar color pattern to the coral snake, which helps to deter animals that may want to eat it. You can tell the difference by their banding pattern. "Red to yellow, kill a fellow. Red to black, venom lack." I would suggest you study more about snakes in general before you buy one. For example, poison is different than venom.

Not really wierd.. But I gave my brother an Xbox 360 for x-mas one here. But it was actually only the box with a bottle of Tequila inside wrapped in towels so it wouldn't shake around. I found the bottle of Tequila was about the same weight as an Xbox 360 so it had a good affect. He was still happy in the end.
