Im surprised McCain didnt ask him if he drank grape soda, KFC or Popeyes, or asked him how is welfare treating ya. Im so glad I didnt vote for this guy.
I'm not saying this in support of McCain, because I personally will say that I did not vote for him, but... most of you are more racist than McCain by thinking his comment referred to the young man being black. I'm guessing McCain would have said this to a Caucasian man just the same if he was that tall. That is a typical thing you say to tall, young men.
Well... Most black people can outplay a white person in basketball, i mean look at the pros! like 70% are black or anything BUT white. and that kid was like freakishly tall anyways so it was a reasonable question to ask.
OMG people calm down! Anyone can see that this kid looks like he is 6' 4", thats why McCain asked if he was teams on the basketball not because he was black. Shit.....
Just because McCain didn't mean any harm by what he said, doesn't mean the exchange isn't revealing. In this day and age, the first thing out of your mouth when you meet a black man should never be "are you the basketball team?" And when he says no, your next response should certainly not be "well you should be." At a minimum, it shows he's old and out of touch. At worst, its subtle, yet thoughtless racism.
From the comments by whites it obvious how different the views are about what is racism. The avg black person does not "claim" racism every instance something happens, but they understand the tone. My white friends think it is gone, but we experience certain levels. I have a doctor friend who has, too often, to explain he is the doctor - people go to the orderly, male/female nurse before him. I meet clients who were great on the phone but then meet me and the conversation changes...it is subtle
To PRIDEVENTURES: I am a white guy, 55 years old, your white friends are "wrong" of course all kinds of racism still exists....but....things are a hell of alot better than it used to be. With all the famous black sports stars and black people virtually taking over television, sitcoms etc...whites are far more used to people of color now. As an average white person (not a Klansman, skinhead or nutcase) the only time I get uptight is when I see young blacks in "gang type cloths"..it scares me
You "wanna" know something funny "inkey2", most of my black friends feel the same way as you, (about young blacks in gang type clothes). LOL - If you ever heard the Chris Rock skit about blacks and ni***rs, then you see what blacks really think. The "avg" black person has just as much problems with "hoodlems" which are black, (or white), as white people. You are right, as people become accustomed to others they realize how alike we really are. You don't have a tail I don't have horns. LOL
I think we're all racist to some degree. McCain needs to realize that it doesn't matter how tall this kid is, asking him if he's on the basketball team is not an appropriate conversation starter to a young black man in 2008. Why not ask him if he's on the chess team?
dude you're an idiot; if you see a nearly 7 some foot kid are you more likely to assume hes a basketball player or on the chess team? and race has nothing to do with it. if he was white, hispanic, or asian but was that tall he still probably would have asked
Dude, just be quiet. If the kid was 7 feet tall and white or Hispanic or Asian he be asked the exact same thing. This sounds like your problem, not anyone else's.
Does McCain ask every tall kid he meets if he's on the basketball team? Maybe... but I doubt it. My gut tells me it has to do with a combination of his height and his race. And I'm not saying that this makes him a bad person, just that he doesn't possess 21st century social skills.
i think its just cuz of height. i dont understand why the chick in the background is laughing though lol. what a groupie

You guys are pathetic. Even I am black and I can tell that he made that comment not because of the guy's his race. It was because of his height.

seriously..the kid is huge...maybe the ones crying racism are the racists themselves....only a true racist would think color first
