@ericsully22 Ah, yes. If we only had more government theft, i.e. taxes, then we would all be more wealthy. How did that go for the millions starving in the USSR?
@leftspank Is it a stretch to write a coherent sentence?
Please don't say are an indoctrinated commie... pleading for the theft of the poor and more control for the banksters. Maybe if you would read some informing books :D Socialism by Ludwig von Mises. or... Power and Market by Murray N. Rothbard.
I grew up listening to this song, thinking "i'm gonna get outta here someday". .. then i got out and realized the grass isn't any greener on the other side at all, just a different shade.
I remember being 15 sitting in my 1st car (old musty smelling 65 Impala) with my guitar and playing along with this song on my stereo...just dreaming about taking off into the great unknown. This song captures those feelings of youth; of being almost ready to break out on your own and feeling held back... I can't remember the person who said it but these words are so true "youth is wasted on the young" LOL
Most country today sings about the glories of small towns. That's okay but there is no soul in the songs. This has soul. Country music did once have soul.
You have to look for the lesser known artists - Rachel Brooke, Wayne Hancock, Jason Isbell, Elizabeth Cook, Jayke Orvis, Hayes Carll and Steve's son Justin Towens Earle are some names to check out.
One of the first songs i'd learnned on the guitar, and aslo one of my favorites. Reminds me of my hometown and the way i feel about it. I'm gonna get outa here someday.
This song reminds me of back home, where the only towns within 100miles have between 50-800 people. All the kids in high school want to leave and go to the big city, but most find their way back to the country to settle down.
somethimes i hear a song in movie and then surch for hearing the original. Also this time, i never get dissapointed. Awesome, how you can find one of the best songs just by watching a great movie.
On of the reasons too watch a good film, it has good music!!!
Steve Earle...Love ya Music...Not most of you politics...Followed you since CopperHead Rd...Stay Healthy and keep makin' good music brother...This song is one of my favorites...
My parents divorced when I was 7 years old, and every Tuesday night, I my mom would pick up my brother and I to drive us to her apartment. On the drive over, my mom would always play her Steve Earle CD. I couldn't stand Steve Earle back then, but over a decade later, I find that he allows me to reconnect to my childhood like nobody else.
he might be a communist possibly. but he's correct in what he said, and i agree with him every man has a right to respect even if it makes me vomit when i say it but fascist little scum bags too. world war 2 was fought to kill off the extreme right wing and if your gonna say that every vetran was wrong to go to give minorities rights then you need a reality check. and before you call me communist, i am. my political views don't affect you so get a grip.
My guess is that Steve would say he is a democratic socialist, not a communist, if you asked him to be more precise - but he does say he is a socialist. But yep - he is pretty much right about politics in my opinion. Sad we live in a country where people know so little they call Obama a socialist.
@nilradem cause our government is trash, and it probley always will be.. honestly we dont have as many rights as we used to and the government doesnt follow the constitution.. USA is becoming a wasteland
@sgbigsby1989 How can you say WWII was fought to "Kill off the extreme right wing"? Brother that was a fight to correct the subjugation of the PLANET. If we sat back and let things play out where do you think that story would have ended? I'll give a slight clue...in a VERY bad place.
I have to say , as a future doctoral student, this song represents everything I've felt about leaving my hometown. Fuck those who say Steve Earle isn't a good songwriter. Maybe they where born in too big of a town.
When I was out playing on the road I found this tape in one of those all night truck stops with the greasy chili dogs and the tired looking guy behind the counter. I bought the tape and put it in the casette player and drove all night and played it over and over again until the other guys in the band said "Hey...no more." Next night they were saying :Hey, put that tape in." Steve Earle's music is kinda like that. Still listen to the tape.
i first heats this song on bridge to terabithia and from there this was the first song i ever learned to play on the guitar...i owe it all to steve <3
@BigSexyKracker YES!!! He & Allison with John Henry are settin' the country on fire this summer, huh? Time fer a little more Guitar Town!!! HE IS THE SHIT!!!
I spent many a nite Hangin' with Steve at the Gold Rush in Elliston Place in Nashville. He is a really nice guy. I actually met my wife there 20 years ago. :)

I wish I knew Steve Earle's address. I'd send him a video of my life since I heard this song. I'd show him how poor I was; I joined the military with one pair of pants (jeans that were almost white from washing them) and show him how hard I tried to make myself better.
I'd show him the day I was married, and then the miracle of my Daughter's birth. I'd show him a lot of things. Steve was with me whether he knew it or not...the whole way.
@Prometheus1st I know im way late on this, but all i have to say is your story is inspiring and best of luck to you. Incredible how Steve Earle never reached the top, one of the best american songwriters ever, sometimes he can be better than John Cougar Mellencamp or even Springsteen.
I used to listen to Essential Steve back in High School every day. Twelve years after graduation, and I wish I was back home instead of in Nashville, lol.
This song is from my dads generation of music but everytime I borrowed his vehicle this cd was already loaded, so I would just play this song over and over because it's just that good!
Yeah right I left home at 17 after 18 years I bought the house I grew up in. All you want to do is go back home. By the way I've never been happier!!!!
that elec chord that comes in at 42 seconds gotta be one of the coolest
things ever
fell outta luv w/ se (bromance style only ! ) years ago now but always'll admire the guy's artistry and man this song still bowls me over 25 years down the road
You cannot beat Steve Earle in so many ways. I saw him at Rockefeller's in Houston in the 1980s--SOLO--one of the most awesome performances I've ever seen. If you spend some time in his home town, Schertz, Texas, it might help some of you "get" it.
You cannot beat Steve Earle in so many ways. I saw him at Rockefeller's in Houston in the 1980s--SOLO--one of the most awesome performances I've ever seen.
@jaybee6264 Wish i grew up in the ear this song came out, i know it was hard, but alot of original memories came out of having the time of your life, when all you wanna do is leave home and make an name for yourself, then all you want is home. I lived on the rez all my life i am 24 now just finally left 4 months ago and i am on my own with two kids, and i just want to go home, but u gotta sacrifice in order to get ahead.
MzDevian can speak for herself... but the reservations remain in the US and Canada. Native groups still own and live on lands that were "given" to them (that is, were lands whites were willing to set aside.) On one hand, there is a significant level of self-governance and the ability to maintain culture. No one is legally forced to live there. On the other, many native peoples are impoverished and forced by economics to remain. The poorest counties in the US are reservations.
@nilradem And Yes we are not forced to live their but, home is where the heart is and i do wish i grew up in the city so i can get a headstart in life, but i am adjuting just fine, it's not like we are totally down and out and can't fend for our selves.
@iveybabyable Check out his son. Justin Townes Earle. He's awsome! "Maybe" as good or even better than his dad. But, you didn't hear me say it. Okay yeah, sure I'll own it.
Well though it's maybe gone for some, at least I can slam about 30 Cold Ones and have some cool ass memories as I met this Dude around '78-79 in So. Ill IIRC and he's a cool Bro and plays a mean Guitar for real! The kinda Bro that would just show up like Joe Blow and then well Blow 'em all away w/ some bad ass crazy cool music and leave before they knew what hit 'em...true story no bs...
I love the early Steve Earl stuff but I think he's going nuts now.

Hello Everyone! =)
Whereas millions of people have this same kind of dream, I'm trying to get help through YouTube to achieve it.
I've loved music and I just want other people to hear me.
Become a professional singer, it’s difficult but not impossible.
It’s my dream? To make it big and have people like and listen to my music.
I’d love if you just give me a chance and stop by my channel. Also if you could thumbs up this comment so other people can see it
Your view could do one big change.

You cannot beat Steve Earle in so many ways. I saw him at Rockefeller's in Houston in the 1980s--SOLO--one of the most awesome performances I've ever seen. If you spend some time in his home town, Schertz, Texas, it might help some of you "get" it.

Grew up on the REZ. This song brings back alot of memories of my boarding school days in Greaswood AZ. I'm from Klagetoh AZ. COWBOY UP...
jaybee6264 1 year ago
@jaybee6264 Wish i grew up in the ear this song came out, i know it was hard, but alot of original memories came out of having the time of your life, when all you wanna do is leave home and make an name for yourself, then all you want is home. I lived on the rez all my life i am 24 now just finally left 4 months ago and i am on my own with two kids, and i just want to go home, but u gotta sacrifice in order to get ahead.
MzDevian 1 year ago
@MzDevian Sorry but what do mean by "rez" surely you don't mean reservation?
as a Scot I find it hard to take in that the still exists in todays culture
]
ScotsLyon 1 year ago
@ScotsLyon
The poorest counties in the US are reservations.
nilradem 1 year ago
@nilradem And Yes we are not forced to live their but, home is where the heart is and i do wish i grew up in the city so i can get a headstart in life, but i am adjuting just fine, it's not like we are totally down and out and can't fend for our selves.
MzDevian 1 year ago
@ScotsLyon Umm By the "Rez" i meant reserve, thats what we call them in Canada, we don't call them reservations like USA does.

Ill IIRC and he's a cool Bro and plays a mean Guitar for real! The kinda Bro that would just show up like Joe Blow and then well Blow 'em all away w/ some bad ass crazy cool music and leave before they knew what hit 'em...true story no bs...
