I've heard some of the songs like restless heart syndrom, east jesus nowhere og american eulogy, and this album is clearly a mix between classic rock, added a good portion og punk rock and a lot of power rock! not power pop. And it also includes a very alternative sound, but still, i will define it as Punk Rock/alternative rock.
Billie certainly said he wanted to make a power pop record, but Know Your Enemy is not power pop and neither is the demo 21st Century Breakdown. Having said that, it's still good regardless of whatever lable you wish to put on it.
it's insane people bashing green day now for not doing all the albums like Dookie..without Green Day they would never be able to listen to Dookie so they have to be grateful to them liking american idiot or not.
I like it very much! And I cant really say the album I like best. Although their older albums have more emotion and portrait teenagers life they can be quite depressive. The new albums are more positive I think :D

Personally I would consider Warning to be old Green Day. It was almost 10 years ago and has a completely different sound to American Idiot. I don't really know, I would classify anything prior to International Superhits as old.
Either way I'm all happy to be hearing something new from them!

I can understand how you say Warning had a different sound to even older Green Day, but they don't even sound like that anymore (or at least with American Idiot, lets hear the new record before we really make judgment on that) and it was a very long time ago, hence my referring to it as old.
I love green day, but i never really grew up with their music. I know how falling in love with music and then having the band change their style from what you initially fell in love with feels like, but idk. my introduction to them was American idiot, then i got the older albums and was constantly saying to myself "wow, i didn't know it was them that sang THIS song". American idiot got me not just into green day, put into rock, so that's the sound i fell in love with.
it really all depends on how a band changes. in this case, greenday's new shit with the exception of american idiot sucked because it was too mainstream...you could tell that they were trying really hard to make radio friendly sugar coated pop punk in order to sell records, where as their old shit was about something and had emotion behind it. todays music sucks because everyone's just in it for the money...making music they think we want to hear rather than music that they really care about.
Well they can do what the want.I don't think they were ever against being bigger,and if they wanna put out more accesible music then that's their call. A bad has to change, what direction would you have wanted them to take? where else could you have went from their position? and if you were them would you really wanna stay in that position any longer? plus they were seen as washed up and past their sell by date,so they had to do something.

the reason they became "washed up" was because they fuckin sold out, or "became more accessible" if that's what you want to call it. when bands make music to get paid you normally will hear a change in their music...it sounds less natural and more forced. blink 182 borderlined on that sound on their toypaj album, but then turned it around on their last one. it really all depends how you choose to change as a band. listen to ataris welcome the night album, very different, but good.
you may not listen to music like i do. for me music is meant to be an artistic outlet, it reflects a persons emotions and thoughts. if you pay attention you can tell if the artist really believes what they're singing or if it's all an act. i could give two shits if greenday became a new age pan flute band..as long as they believed in what they were doing rather than just selling albums. haven't heard enough of this album to say if i like it or not but i'd like it to have the same vibe as dookie.
american idiot was a decent album, but i think that they should start moving away from the whole political scene and get over the whole rock opera concept album thing...its been done already. i think they should go back to more personal subject matter, they weren't meant to be a bad religion/anti flag. btw check out nofx's the decline.

well he wrote that song when he was in his mid 20's. besides thats what appeals to the masses, there isnt a single band in the world on a major label that does EXACTLY what they want with their music.

I kinda agree with you scissorhands, they didn't need to change to the extent they did with American Idiot, but if they were playing the same sound for 20 years, people wouldn't still be listening to them.
I can understand how you say Warning had a different sound to even older Green Day, but they don't even sound like that anymore (or at least with American Idiot, lets hear the new record before we really make judgment on that) and it was a very long time ago, hence my referring to it as old.

I love green day, but i never really grew up with their music. I know how falling in love with music and then having the band change their style from what you initially fell in love with feels like, but idk. my introduction to them was American idiot, then i got the older albums and was constantly saying to myself "wow, i didn't know it was them that sang THIS song". American idiot got me not just into green day, put into rock, so that's the sound i fell in love with.

it really all depends on how a band changes. in this case, greenday's new shit with the exception of american idiot sucked because it was too mainstream...you could tell that they were trying really hard to make radio friendly sugar coated pop punk in order to sell records, where as their old shit was about something and had emotion behind it. todays music sucks because everyone's just in it for the money...making music they think we want to hear rather than music that they really care about.

Well they can do what the want.I don't think they were ever against being bigger,and if they wanna put out more accesible music then that's their call. A bad has to change, what direction would you have wanted them to take? where else could you have went from their position? and if you were them would you really wanna stay in that position any longer? plus they were seen as washed up and past their sell by date,so they had to do something.

the reason they became "washed up" was because they fuckin sold out, or "became more accessible" if that's what you want to call it. when bands make music to get paid you normally will hear a change in their music...it sounds less natural and more forced. blink 182 borderlined on that sound on their toypaj album, but then turned it around on their last one. it really all depends how you choose to change as a band. listen to ataris welcome the night album, very different, but good.

you may not listen to music like i do. for me music is meant to be an artistic outlet, it reflects a persons emotions and thoughts. if you pay attention you can tell if the artist really believes what they're singing or if it's all an act. i could give two shits if greenday became a new age pan flute band..as long as they believed in what they were doing rather than just selling albums. haven't heard enough of this album to say if i like it or not but i'd like it to have the same vibe as dookie.

american idiot was a decent album, but i think that they should start moving away from the whole political scene and get over the whole rock opera concept album thing...its been done already. i think they should go back to more personal subject matter, they weren't meant to be a bad religion/anti flag. btw check out nofx's the decline.

There's this one article in a magazine where billie was saying that he and tre went to a church with a friend, and they were really disturbed what the priest was saying. they hate the idea of some of the religious shit the guy was saying and that it's somewhat brainwashing people to fear god and be good citizens.also, American idiot wasn't all political. it like a fuck you to bush, but also talking about how america is so brainwashed by the media.

i cant really tell anymore which ones i think could of been on their old albums because his voice has changed so much over the years and the guitar is so much more organized and in tune. but their always being criticized about their eyeliner and the way they dress. i dont get why they decided to put on eyeliner and wear all black i think if they dressed te way they used to people would consider them more punk. that sounds funny to say but the world is so materialized these days its true im 14btw
