Ive always wondered this, and maybe nows a good time to get an answer, 1. why doesnt fdny use the federal qs, just a manual electronic siren? and 2. if they cant use them, why are there a few rigs (very very few) that have qs on them?
@bradabbottmusic 1. It causes "noise pollution" as it is too loud in the city so they dont want to use it. 2. The few rigs that do have Q's are usually bought from the members of that house and are drilled in the bumper. They're taken off if the truck that has it needs repairs and has to go to the shop since if the mechanics at the shop fun them, they confiscate it....and the guys who bought it don't get it back. Wonder what they do with the Q's they confiscate.

If I was FDNY Fire Commissioner I would have a REAL Q on every rig and I would order all companies to use ONLY the Q and use the electronic only when the Q doesn't work. If I have to pay a fine that's "fine" with me; it's a matter of life and death when responding to a call.

I was walking down 14th St. once and I saw a Seagrave Tower Ladder (I think T-35) going to a call with its Q going up and down PEAKING. No horn or electronic siren just the Q by itself, but people on the sidewalks were holding their ears and gritting their teeth. However ALL cars scattered out of its way like scared cockroaches!

I've been to this station, and I know for a fact that the Q siren works on both rigs. In fact, I've seen and heard both of them with the Q on. Tes, the 40 is cool.

Most of the trucks in the city dont have Q's any more because it is to loud and the sound bounces off of the buildings and can cause deffness.
