It isn't random; They got down to their car, took off. Drove to Queen/Bathurst, about a minute away from Richmond street, got a call, drove back.

They were probably gone from the scene a whole 2 minutes, which means the killer was probably there before they left, which means that if it were random he would've got them right then and there before they left. But because they came back just 2 minutes later he must've known that they were gonna come back.
