Link is a lot like Lion-O in that he has an old body but the mind of a boy, and Saria is sort of like Wily-Kat. Kokiri are young forever, but Saria is actually much older than Link even when young, and also when old since she lived those years as a sage.
I think Link+Zelda fans are in the minority when considering OoT. Sure, the whole Sheik thing added some spice, along with the tower rescue, but Malon or Ruto or Saria are just much better.
Anyway, Saria was truly tragic. I felt she was sort of an older-sister figure to him initially, then they parted as equals after he saved Great Deku, and then... maybe something more when he awakes?
