As far as relibilty the toyota is much better, but the landrover has a much stronger undercarriage.
If you could cet a landrover with toyota engine, gearbox axles and electrics, while keeping the landrover chassis, suspension axlehousings, steering. Now that would make a beast of a offroader.
The toytas are quite capable, but the landrovers have some advantages.
i have 13 Land Cruisers 2 of which are 100 series and they are extremly capable, in all of my experience rovers are trash, they arent as capable as the cruisers, and nothing compares to the reliability and capability of the Land cruisers, also the cruiser has many more factory options(snorkle, PTO winch, lockers,SB disconnects, bull bar, sliders ect...) not sold in US though, nor is the 105 which has a solid axle in front and lockers ect...
If you look closely it looks like a tow strap which are made to stretch a bit and create a "slingshot" effect so that is the best way to use it. Where as if it was a chain then what you say would be correct.
