hi ed i'm a writer and i've been doing a few pieces with trombone lately, as part of a three horn group. i have a little functional knowledge of the instrument (positions and method of sound production) but i still would like to hear/read your thoughts on the instrument itself and how it unfolds within a group and on its own.
I think i have been playing with bad habits since i started to play the trombone which was nine years ago do you think that its possible to unlearn those bad habits?
Absolutely! But it's not a matter of unlearning the bad habits. What we can do is start learning and training with "good" habits and then over time replace the old bad habits with the new good habits. Also important is when you notice that you have reverted to an old bad habit, it's best to stop and begin again with the intention of only using the new preferred method. OK?
No, I stopped listening to other trombone players years ago, so that I would develop my own individual sound. Note, that this was after years of Really listening to other trombone players, especially the masters.
Ed, I don't think anyone should deny themselves the fine musicianship of any of the young trombone players on the scene or of the past, regardless of instrument.
Not sure what this means. I stopped listened to other trombonists so that I could better develop my own sound and approach, which I think I did. This was after years of checking out, listening to and transcribing everybody. No denying anything or anybody.
It starts in A minor actually, but in this case, I wasn't thinking about funtional harmony, just C major/A minor and free. With that said, there is a loose II V I at the end of the piece.

changing from an upstream player to a downstream player is not easy. I would not recommend changing unless you REALLY have a reason to change. Ed
