Can't remember the exact details but for some reason Freddie Green refused to play the gig but nothing to do with George playing guitar, completely different players, Freddie was a rhythm guitarist.. Tony Bennett and Joe Williams also performed.
Wow! Kicking ass and taking names ---GB is one of the greatest git men on the planet ----unbelievable talent--he plays so down to earth and bluesy--I just love him and wish I was him!
You're crazy, Benson is doing great and it fits nicely. Saying that is insulting Basie's taste. If it's good enough for Basie it's good enough for me.
@NicholasFruneaux You would do well to sit down with a couple Basie records to try and truly understand what he was about. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Benson. But this performance was a Capitally-motivated one, and artistically, the two players don't compliment each other. IMO (In my Opinion). You'd probably also do well not not call a complete stranger crazy...
@awfulguitarplucker I beg to differ. Any music is for any person. I personally think Basie would abhor the idea that his music 'is not for' a certain group of people. Hell, if a Bieber fan likes the sound of this music, all strength to them, they have a very broad range of musical taste. I think it's great that people into the more popular musical styles of this day and age can appreciate teh mastery of musicians such as Basie.
I love Basie, and I like Benson a lot, but I didn't much care for this... and why no Freddy Greene? Basie pre-deceased him, I believe, so where is he?
Just in case anyone ever wondered if the monicker "Bad Benson" was well deserved!!! Whoa, talk about swingin' ! What a wonderful combination - Basie and Benson. I was kind of waiting for George to play some single note type lines; but he soloed all the way through - as only he could do - with that unique approach to octaves(+) that is so cool. Loved it.
(Bonus - George with "fro" and flare bottom trousers. Ah, the good ole days!))
Hey Yall, please contact Ibanez so they can bring back this GB-20 model guitar back in blonde and in sunburst, and thank you george, please help it come back!!

honestly. this would be better without benson. he's in the way of basie. both great players, but IMO this is a poor matchup
