@hutch356 the gear box in the starboard/right engine siezed which in turn stopped thrust to that side and the plane went in to a gradual spin from the thrust on the left side. hughes could've saved himself if he would have throttled down on the other side but he had no clue what had happened.
@hutch356 hughes thought that it will add more speed to the plane but in turn it was a very complicated little piece of machinery and after this crash another prototype was built with only one prop per engine the counter rotating prop idea back then was like alien technology so hughes built it i bet he regretted that idea later on in his life.

It does not have counter rotation props, because it is a replica of the second prototype, not the one that Mr. Hughes crashed in LA.
