I feel bad for him too. The way his childhood is described in the books it's pretty obvious that his so called friends didn't even like him, just let him tag along to boost their egos. Of course, Peter totally went evil and took the easy way out...but if the Marauders had actually taken him half way seriously they might have prevented this or at least seen it coming.

That's a little bit unfair, I think. They might have in the back of their minds felt kind of sorry for him, but they weren't just friends to boost their egos. I think they really liked him. Besides which, Peter effectively KILLED Lily and James (and could've killed baby Harry, too). That's just not in the same category, and the fact that James didn't take him seriously enough, or whatever, doesn't even come close to being a valid excuse for that.
