@Shaleyra Aqui te voy a decir lo q trate de decirte pero solo te envuelves en tener ono dinero. Si quieres ayudar puedes hacerlo aunque tengas 17. Ponte en contacto con el cuartel de policia mas cercano y pide que te comunique n con la oficina de servicios a la comunidad. Ahi puedes reportar casos de maltrato q veas, como por ejemplo un caballo desnutrido en la carretera amarrado. Llama al albergue mas cercano y preguntas si necesitan voluntarios de lo q sea. Muchos refujios no ponen menores...
@tytania3545 ya lo hice, y tb tengo un grupito pa limpiar playas pero no hemos podido pq hay q esperar a tener carro para transportacion, estoy estudiando Grooming Profecional y donare mi tiempo en preparar y limpiar bn a los perritos para q los adopten y todo lo q necesiten q este en mi alcance. @Shaleyra Te voy a dar el mismo consejo que le doy a mis sobrinos q tienen tu edad, tienes q controlar tus emociones y la forma que te expresas. A tu edad aprendi q tenia q hablar mejor q los adultos para vencerlos a su propio juego, desde entonces hablo como hablo, orita me dijiste q uso palabras grandes, si supieras q las uso desde que tenia mas o menos tu edad y CREEME funciona. @Shaleyra a trabajar directamente con los animales por los riesgos legales pero si necesitan personas q limpien los kennels y orienten a las personas q van. Tambien puedes orientar a personas q conoces cuando veas un perro o gato deshidratado. Tambien si esta animico: primero verificas si tiene garrapatas o pulgas y entonces lan encias, la colorocion es blancuzca y no rosacea, el animal necesita ayuda de emergencia, si el dueno no quiere cooperar llama a Humane Society en Guaynabo.

El perro esta mejor en el shelter q con tu hermana, lo q debes hacer es hablar con ella para q no vuelva a tener perro, la proximavez q ella diga q quiere un perro recuerdale lo mal q la paso con el otro. Es mejor q personas q no se van a comprometer con el animal (especialmente ENTRENARLO) no los tengan, el animal sufre. easier said than done. Unfortunately even if you offer to spay and neuter pets in PR people here are not well informed of the benefits of doing so. You have no idea how many times I've encounter people to which I've asked "do you plan to neuter your dog?" to which almost every time the answer will be "No, I havent considered that as an option. Why would I want to do that?!" Combating the symptoms (putting the dogs to sleep) is not the solution, EDUCATION is the key.
Es una rehalidad lo que aqui se ve ; el gobierno no hace nada para ayudar a que la poblacion animal sea atendida con un minimo de misericordia, no asignan fondos solo para matarlos y de forma poco piadosa y las personas que se envuelven en ayudar sin recibir ningun sueldo no reciben ni el apoyo de la policia de hecho muchos de ellos son los primeros que son crueles con los animales eso habla mucho de nosotros a nivel internacional FORTUñO SENADORES LEGISLEN AFAVOR DE LOS QUE DAN FIDELIDAD A NOS.
The other problem is education, people think "oh I like that breed" but don't study it before getting it, then they don't train them, and the let's say dog, becomes a nuisance barking all night jumping on guest, the person blemes the uneducated "DOG" and abandons it somewhere because it's to much of a hasttle to find it a good home beacause the dog is no longer a puppy and is not properly trained. Sorry for the rant guys, just had to take that off my chest!!! whew!!!
Registering an animal makes the person be even more responsible, beacause if they can't take care fo it anymore they HAVE to take it to a shelter or find it a new home, it they ABANDON it they will have consecuences. If you don't have $20 to pay for a fee, then how are you going to feed, vaccinated and other type of care. People think (and this goes for every country) taht animals are another household accesory and when not playing with them they put them on a crate or tie them in the yard.
I have taken about 4 dogs and 7 cats to the Guaynabo shelter and have given in each ocasion a "donation" I don't have ANYproblems with that. But controling the population is key, also putting responsabilities on the present owners of animals. A few months ago a congresswoman (I can't remember which) proposed to have the animals registerd and have the owners pay a $20 registraion fee, this is reasonable! But everyone got outraged that they had to pay!!! Carajo, mano, q nos pasa!!!

Si no tienes $20 para eso entonces no tienes dinero para ir al veterinario para vacunarlo y esterilizarlo. Es como las playas, me he ido a limpiar playas y justo al lado veo un puerco tirrando una bottella de cerveza al agua, le grite q era un puerco de mierda y le hice pasar la verguenza de su vida. @Shaleyra me acabo de fijar que solo tienes 17 anos y conoces muy poco de responsabilidades y como funciona la ley. Registrar un perro sirve la misma funcion q un registro demografico. Si TODOS los animales estan registrados crea mas responsabilidad en su dueno para con el animal. Por ende si una persona ABANDONA el perro o gato o lo que sea esto le facilita a las autoridades pertinentes encausar a esa persona. La GRAN MAYORIA de los animales en la calle han sido abandonados.

Tu lo q quieres es q se ayude a los q ya estan abandonados, y eso esta bien, yo lo he hecho en muchas ocaciones, pero yo quiero q se RESUELVA EL PROBLEMA. @Shaleyra a los demas animales en el albergue. No crees q SOY YO la q debo de ser RESPONSABLE por ellos!!! pero como no estan registrados no se puede hacer NADA. Si estuvieran registrados, la policia puede MULTARME (o hasta carcel) por abandono y maltrato de animales, brindando asi mas apoyo para los albergues de animales. For years I have visited PR on business and ended up rescuing animals. One in Isla Verde and another poor doberman outside of the municipal dump in Avenida Kennedy. I had to offer the pay the Humane Society to come and pick up this animal who was dying of renal failure in a parking lot in full view of EVERY bastardo cabron driving by! Alguna gente no tiene corazon.

What i do to help is that about 5 months i help a dog out by going to the landfill and taking some puppys that are all alone i found a pitbull mix last week it was so cute i had to grab it
what happens in puerto rico is that 90% of the people here cant afford to take care of a dog and everybody wants a dog but if you cant even pay your rent how you going to take care of a dog. and the goverment gives a shit about animals. al they want to do is kill them so they can take the money that was going to be used to take care of the animals
Each one of us has a share of responsability. We could all do our part by sterilizing our own pets, not giving pets as gifts (some like them as pups but when they face responsabilities they discard them like trash), and teaching our children how to care and love pets. For goodness sake, God gave us those creatures for we could share our love with them, the same way He shares His love with us. We love our oficial tiny mascot, the coquí, I'm sure there is enough space in our hearts for other pets.
In the States I have my La Pom ( a mix of pure bred Lhasa Apso and Pomeranian) registered with the county. She got a tag with number. At Pet Smart the Banfield offers a health care and she got all her vaccines and neutered. I vote republican since the age of 18 and I am 49 and never give up to get the statehood for Puerto Rico.
We need to make a change and get new leaders that could make a different, puerto rico vets are say they could do it but haven't complete they statement to making it to reality. Big chage will come i promise.

this video made me cry i am from puerto rico and were i lived there was dog being dump olmos every week by two or three and ill always cry and begged my mom intil she let me give them a home ones i had 13 dogs and 7 cats untill we moved here in philly and left them with my uncle and he did the same thing you see here dump them all the day my mom told me i cried all day and hated the day she dicided to move here i still can wait for the day i get to move back to puerto rico to help this animals
If you like so much animal, I personally invite to come a take all these dogs to main land USA. They need people like you to take care of them. We Puerto Ricans care about those dogs at home. All those animals are filth and they should be exterminated.
I am Salvadorian and Im going to Puerto in 2 weeks... I searched for videos to see what would it be like when I get there... and came across this video... I Love Animals... I have fought for the rights of elephants with the Ringling Brothers and I am literally crying right now observing this beautiful innocent animals being mistreated... I know Puerto Ricans are nice people... every nation loves animals... so whos to blame? I know this is not only in PR but common! Heartbreaking and senseless.
I adopted my dog, Wilma, from an organization called Animals in Need. She and her sister were from the garbage dump in P.R. We should tell all of our friends to adopt shelter dogs instead of buying from breeders. You can save an animals life. Many people agree that mutts are better than pure-bred dogs.
Excellent well-put video! I'm currently in Puerto Rico on my annual visit from Miami and I cannot stand to see all the dogs, cats, and even horses that are malnourished and mistreated. Every year it seems to get worse. Its heart-breaking!!

Thank you for posting this. I've been to Puerto Rico several times and the stray dog epidemic seems to have gotten worse lately - possibly because of the economic downturn. Ghandi said that you can tell a lot about a country in the way it treats it's animals. Puerto Rico's response has been shameful.

Este fin de semana rescatamos un sato en Salinas, ahora vive en Caguas con mejor amiga, ya esta vacunado y desparasitado. Creo que el gobierno tiene gran culpa de este mal social ya que no crea campañas dirigidas a educar a la población acerca de la sobrepoblación animal. De hecho tengo una perrita que quiero esterilizar, pero aun tengo que esperar a despues de su primer celo, si alguien sabe de algun programa que no cobre mucho para esta operacion que me deje saber ya que estoy desempleado.
I lived in Puerto Rico and I had the opportunity to save a stray. Its all so sad and frustrating that these beautiful and loving animals are in such terrible circumstances. I wish that something be done about this situation and so that there will be no more strays like my beloved dog "Bonita" was before I saved her.

I grow up in PR and I saw how a lot of people where trying to help out these dogs but if the government doesn't take action, it's so hard to care for so many homeless animals in the island..And people need to take responsibility when getting an animal THESE POOR ANIMALS SUFFER YOU KNOW....Bendito!

She would never support cockfighting as far as I know, she is a devoted fierce animal activist of many years standing, it wouldn't strike a nerve to her at all ,she would see it as something to be gotten rid of too, but this documentary is about the animal crisis on the island of cats and dogs. There are myriad issues here in PR, including the one of cockfighting, one person cannot focus on everything.
glenv, out of curiousity i went to a cockfight there in PR and was repulsed by the savagery of the "game". i would have thought that Jane Velez would tackle that issue first.

I think we have to make more awareness programs and the cost of maintaining a pet. The government has to stay away from our loving pets. Perhaps the Church can help. My Church has an pet awareness program, we contribute to the humane society, and we even have a service to pray for our loving pets once a year. My dog even has pet insurance for regular visits to the vet. I am a Humanitarian Puerto Rican. I care .
The government cares more about the power and money, they don't care about the people at all. So they don't give a shit about what happens with dogs and cats.
Yes, raising a family pet cost money so if you don't think you will have the time and money to keep your pet healthy and happy then don't have one.
There are people in PR and US trying to help like Save a Sato, Island Dog, PAWS, Santuario Canita, Santuario San Francisco de Asis, among others. Also the SPCA in Connecticut recently had an adoption drive with a lot of stray dogs from PR.
If you are thinking about adopting pets please don't neglect them by having them tied up in the backyard or throw them away because your pet is not behaving properly or you don't longer want it. If you throw them, YOU are being part of the problem abandoning another pet in the streets. Please have patience and give your pet the time it needs to be trained and loved.
We have to educate the people so they can spay and neuter their pets to control the overpopulation of stray animals. Also people need to understand that having a pet is not like buying a t shirt that you get and then throw away when you don't longer want it. Having a pet is having a living creature that will depend on his/her owner to have a healthy and happy life.

@Shaleyra Aqui te voy a decir lo q trate de decirte pero solo te envuelves en tener ono dinero. Si quieres ayudar puedes hacerlo aunque tengas 17. Ponte en contacto con el cuartel de policia mas cercano y pide que te comunique n con la oficina de servicios a la comunidad. Ahi puedes reportar casos de maltrato q veas, como por ejemplo un caballo desnutrido en la carretera amarrado. Llama al albergue mas cercano y preguntas si necesitan voluntarios de lo q sea. Muchos refujios no ponen menores...

@Shaleyra a trabajar directamente con los animales por los riesgos legales pero si necesitan personas q limpien los kennels y orienten a las personas q van. Tambien puedes orientar a personas q conoces cuando veas un perro o gato deshidratado. Tambien si esta animico: primero verificas si tiene garrapatas o pulgas y entonces lan encias, la colorocion es blancuzca y no rosacea, el animal necesita ayuda de emergencia, si el dueno no quiere cooperar llama a Humane Society en Guaynabo.

@Shaleyra ella tiene el de ella TODO EL DIA Y NOCHE EN EL PATIO, se le olvida darle comida asi qu lo hago yo, a el perro no le operaron la 5ta pesuna y la de la patita trasera esta lastimada, el perro esta comenzando a tener un problema en los ojos, ya le avise de TODO esto, tu crees q le importa, nada q ver. I saw my cousins beating a dog. and I fought with them to stop. and they told me "it doesn't hurt the dog, Animals don't feel pain like people."

easier said than done. Unfortunately even if you offer to spay and neuter pets in PR people here are not well informed of the benefits of doing so. You have no idea how many times I've encounter people to which I've asked "do you plan to neuter your dog?" to which almost every time the answer will be "No, I havent considered that as an option. Why would I want to do that?!" Combating the symptoms (putting the dogs to sleep) is not the solution, EDUCATION is the key.

The other problem is education, people think "oh I like that breed" but don't study it before getting it, then they don't train them, and the let's say dog, becomes a nuisance barking all night jumping on guest, the person blemes the uneducated "DOG" and abandons it somewhere because it's to much of a hasttle to find it a good home beacause the dog is no longer a puppy and is not properly trained. Sorry for the rant guys, just had to take that off my chest!!! whew!!!

Registering an animal makes the person be even more responsible, beacause if they can't take care fo it anymore they HAVE to take it to a shelter or find it a new home, it they ABANDON it they will have consecuences. If you don't have $20 to pay for a fee, then how are you going to feed, vaccinated and other type of care. People think (and this goes for every country) taht animals are another household accesory and when not playing with them they put them on a crate or tie them in the yard.

I have taken about 4 dogs and 7 cats to the Guaynabo shelter and have given in each ocasion a "donation" I don't have ANYproblems with that. But controling the population is key, also putting responsabilities on the present owners of animals. A few months ago a congresswoman (I can't remember which) proposed to have the animals registerd and have the owners pay a $20 registraion fee, this is reasonable! But everyone got outraged that they had to pay!!! Carajo, mano, q nos pasa!!!

Si TODOS los animales estan registrados crea mas responsabilidad en su dueno para con el animal. Por ende si una persona ABANDONA el perro o gato o lo que sea esto le facilita a las autoridades pertinentes encausar a esa persona. La GRAN MAYORIA de los animales en la calle han sido abandonados.

For years I have visited PR on business and ended up rescuing animals. One in Isla Verde and another poor doberman outside of the municipal dump in Avenida Kennedy. I had to offer the pay the Humane Society to come and pick up this animal who was dying of renal failure in a parking lot in full view of EVERY bastardo cabron driving by! Alguna gente no tiene corazon.

Each one of us has a share of responsability. We could all do our part by sterilizing our own pets, not giving pets as gifts (some like them as pups but when they face responsabilities they discard them like trash), and teaching our children how to care and love pets. For goodness sake, God gave us those creatures for we could share our love with them, the same way He shares His love with us. We love our oficial tiny mascot, the coquí, I'm sure there is enough space in our hearts for other pets.

In the States I have my La Pom ( a mix of pure bred Lhasa Apso and Pomeranian) registered with the county. She got a tag with number. At Pet Smart the Banfield offers a health care and she got all her vaccines and neutered. I vote republican since the age of 18 and I am 49 and never give up to get the statehood for Puerto Rico.

We need to make a change and get new leaders that could make a different, puerto rico vets are say they could do it but haven't complete they statement to making it to reality. Big chage will come i promise.

this video made me cry i am from puerto rico and were i lived there was dog being dump olmos every week by two or three and ill always cry and begged my mom intil she let me give them a home ones i had 13 dogs and 7 cats untill we moved here in philly and left them with my uncle and he did the same thing you see here dump them all the day my mom told me i cried all day and hated the day she dicided to move here i still can wait for the day i get to move back to puerto rico to help this animals

If you like so much animal, I personally invite to come a take all these dogs to main land USA. They need people like you to take care of them. We Puerto Ricans care about those dogs at home. All those animals are filth and they should be exterminated.

I am Salvadorian and Im going to Puerto in 2 weeks... I searched for videos to see what would it be like when I get there... and came across this video... I Love Animals... I have fought for the rights of elephants with the Ringling Brothers and I am literally crying right now observing this beautiful innocent animals being mistreated... I know Puerto Ricans are nice people... every nation loves animals... so whos to blame? I know this is not only in PR but common! Heartbreaking and senseless.

I adopted my dog, Wilma, from an organization called Animals in Need. She and her sister were from the garbage dump in P.R. We should tell all of our friends to adopt shelter dogs instead of buying from breeders. You can save an animals life. Many people agree that mutts are better than pure-bred dogs.

Excellent well-put video! I'm currently in Puerto Rico on my annual visit from Miami and I cannot stand to see all the dogs, cats, and even horses that are malnourished and mistreated. Every year it seems to get worse. Its heart-breaking!!
I love Puerto Rico but I hate this problem. I really hope the word continues to spread and action is taken. I'm certainly not staying quiet!

Thank you for posting this. I've been to Puerto Rico several times and the stray dog epidemic seems to have gotten worse lately - possibly because of the economic downturn. Ghandi said that you can tell a lot about a country in the way it treats it's animals. Puerto Rico's response has been shameful.

most of puerto rican = dont care about dogs. they look it like birds theres alot everywhere but they let em be. :/ My opinion umm sure save animals but economy first were broke 25thousand unemployed this last months. After we get up from this problem then we can resolve dogs problems or civilians use their own money to save em. I didnt want to sound cruel but its true :(

Este fin de semana rescatamos un sato en Salinas, ahora vive en Caguas con mejor amiga, ya esta vacunado y desparasitado. Creo que el gobierno tiene gran culpa de este mal social ya que no crea campañas dirigidas a educar a la población acerca de la sobrepoblación animal. De hecho tengo una perrita que quiero esterilizar, pero aun tengo que esperar a despues de su primer celo, si alguien sabe de algun programa que no cobre mucho para esta operacion que me deje saber ya que estoy desempleado.

I lived in Puerto Rico and I had the opportunity to save a stray. Its all so sad and frustrating that these beautiful and loving animals are in such terrible circumstances. I wish that something be done about this situation and so that there will be no more strays like my beloved dog "Bonita" was before I saved her.

This breaks my heart... I grow up in PR and I saw how a lot of people where trying to help out these dogs but if the government doesn't take action, it's so hard to care for so many homeless animals in the island..And people need to take responsibility when getting an animal THESE POOR ANIMALS SUFFER YOU KNOW....Bendito!

You obviously do not know much about Jane Velez-Mitchell. She would never support cockfighting as far as I know, she is a devoted fierce animal activist of many years standing, it wouldn't strike a nerve to her at all ,she would see it as something to be gotten rid of too, but this documentary is about the animal crisis on the island of cats and dogs. There are myriad issues here in PR, including the one of cockfighting, one person cannot focus on everything.

I think we have to make more awareness programs and the cost of maintaining a pet. The government has to stay away from our loving pets. Perhaps the Church can help. My Church has an pet awareness program, we contribute to the humane society, and we even have a service to pray for our loving pets once a year. My dog even has pet insurance for regular visits to the vet. I am a Humanitarian Puerto Rican. I care .

Yes, raising a family pet cost money so if you don't think you will have the time and money to keep your pet healthy and happy then don't have one.
There are people in PR and US trying to help like Save a Sato, Island Dog, PAWS, Santuario Canita, Santuario San Francisco de Asis, among others. Also the SPCA in Connecticut recently had an adoption drive with a lot of stray dogs from PR.

If you are thinking about adopting pets please don't neglect them by having them tied up in the backyard or throw them away because your pet is not behaving properly or you don't longer want it. If you throw them, YOU are being part of the problem abandoning another pet in the streets. Please have patience and give your pet the time it needs to be trained and loved.

We have to educate the people so they can spay and neuter their pets to control the overpopulation of stray animals. Also people need to understand that having a pet is not like buying a t shirt that you get and then throw away when you don't longer want it. Having a pet is having a living creature that will depend on his/her owner to have a healthy and happy life.
