Y argue over which version is best? Obviously, the Smiths' version is definitive. Still, this cover gives it a West Coast flavor that appeals to my Cali Grl heart. I like Death Cab's too. In the 60s, did fans argue over which Proud Mary was better, CCR's or Ike & Tina's? Or which Respect ruled, Otis Redding's or Aretha's? Or which Watchtower, Dylan or Hendrix? Covering a song was a way to pay homage to an icon AND stake your own claim as an artist. "Can't we all just get along, people?"

@gogogunners Good point; The Smiths' version is the original and the benchmark, and nothing, IMO, replaces it, but to me, a good cover is one that puts an original and creative spin on a classic while remaining faithful to it, and as long as you can pull that off, more power to you. I think this version fits both criteria.

I'm sure that they did. I would have. And if this cover would have been released in the mid eighties, close to the original's release, I would raise hell. But the fact of the matter is that, like you implied, this cover is a tribute -an homage to the original song. No one can touch the definitive version, but this one in particular is pretty good.
