  • his seat is amazing...it takes such a steady hand to keep soft contact with the horse's mouth when teaching the horse how to stretch and accept the hand as he is doing. wow, his posture is unreal. very strong position.

  • The idea is that hands should always be above the bit, in order to give actions directly to the mouth, and not to the tongue. That's just what every equestrian masters have always done ...

Master Karl is a disciple of Baucher and his first goal is to have a relaxed jaw, in order to dispose of the whole horse. This can only be achieved by giving actions towards the mouth. Actions agains the tongue are aggressive and bring contractions.

  • It's a demi arret. The purpose is to get the horse's jaw relaxed and flexing. The process lasts a few seconds so I don't see your point. This is no more harsh than riding long and low or using a tight turn to check a bolt.

  • That's just nasty looking. I don't care who he is.

  • I suppose if you don't understand what he's doing.

  • I don't get it, this looks awful.

  • You don't get it. That's apparent.

  • Yup, that's what I said.

  • What ever that means.

  • Thank you for finding this terrific clip for me. Now i understand whar a rider i have to see every day is trying to achive. I am suffering on behalf of the poor horses that tries their best and get punishment for trying to relax their backs and find the harmony and confidence. A shame for the equestrian world.

  • i do not understand why he tries to keep the head of the horse up. that looks a little bit like the horse will get pain in his back. isn´t it the right way to activate the back hand and when this is carrying the weight the horses head will raise by itself? that was the way i teach and the i way ride my horses.

  • If you watch PK's and the horse's actions very carefully he only asks for the horse to raise it's neck when the horse inverts it's neck and goes above the bit. In order to get away from this irritating (not painful) upwards action the horse yields down, this movement is rewarded by PK by a gentle contious contact. In essence it's operant conditioning the horse to the hands. Seems a sound way to educate the horse to the hand. the alternative is ceaseless forward riding until the horse guesses?

  • as i mentioned before: i do not understand what he is trying to do. but if he was riding my horse like this i would get him off as soon as possible.

  • @1010nicole1010 , Would you prefer your horse to be above the bit and tense.

  • @1010nicole1010 ,

He's not trying to keep the head up, rather he's trying to get the horse to lower it's head.

  • I'm riding after PK since 2 years, and a lot of people dont understand his teachings, because the system of legerete is very sophisticated, u have to take a closer look to understand, plus most people are just very ignorant , to me he is an absolut master, like Olivera was , i 've seen him live and it was just amazing!!!!

  • Well said Piepslette !! Only one or two Masters appear each 100 years and Mestre Philippe Karl is one for this century. We are fortunate, indeed, to have him teach us.

  • It is not easy to correct a horse that was ridden behind the vertical on the forehand for years (like this one probably was). First correction steps may not look very good especially for people that think that a low head is everything.

I like this video because people should get see how it may look when you have to get a Horse back to raise his head. We only see deep heads, deep hands, crank nosebands and get used to it as if it were a natural thing.

    Totally needless comment lindaglinda!

  • Philippe Karl is absolutely amazing!
