Since first discovering this video a few weeks ago I have gone back and played it several times. I was always a big fan of the Pitney song and never thought it could be improved upon but Eddi's take on it and the visuals are incredible and the change in lyrics works in my book. Think of this as a kind of reimagining to a classic. Its a classic all its own.

This knocks the arse out of the original, I really like the ajusting of lyrics in this version. Gene Pitney version is kinda depressing, especially when you read about the film it was written for.

Actually I like both the original and this vid however I like Eddie Readers version more only because it is more modern, she sings it superbly and it is very very sexy. I also love Scottish women. Eddie Reader is a dynamite singer easily as good as American greats like Ronstadt etc.

Ok just did a little more research into this little Gaelic lady. Actually she is fantastic. A lot of depth back there with her Scottish heritage. Man I love this stuff. BTW this is the best version of Town I've heard. I love her vibrato.

Umm one of my favorite songs, I remember when it first came out when I was 13. Gene is awesome. This chick Eddi Reader is awesome. I've never heard of her and that's what's nice about youtube. Jbrew she goes flat when??? Who the frick cares?? What for a nanosecond. Everybody sings a little off jack it's the engineers in the studios that bring it back. Do you really know what yer talking about.

I changed some words in my arrogance because I wanted it to be less about a young couple in love but more about every single human being in this world born loving and putting up with the world and its shadows of violence, oppression, trauma and hate..... sorry Pitney fans for not sticking to the exact words. @jrdouglas This song is meant to be a gritty wail of angst, sung by a rebellious youth who feels the world is against him. This vapid version sucks the life right out of it. Showgirls? Vamping? Why? The lyric "We're like tigers in a cage" expresses the angst beautifully. Replacing it with the meaningless "We're like flowers in a cage" is an insult to intelligence.  You sing well, Eddi, but you've turned this classic into an insipid puff piece. It's AWFUL.

all due respect I have to totally disagree with you. the vampy sex is already inherent in Gene's original. What could be more visually appropriate during the instrumental break at 1:52?

the video story told here underscores the theme in the lyrics of a world of sleaze and power and gossip that sometimes ruins innocent people's lives.

anyhow you can't blame Eddi for the video itself which was probably conceived by someone else. I agree some of the word changes are not needed.

Fabulous video performance. Eddi Reader also made a great album/ cd of the songs of Robert Burns. Highly recommended. I saw Gene Ptney sing this a couple of years ago in Edinburgh and his 3 hour not perfect performance was breathtaking.
