Since first discovering this video a few weeks ago I have gone back and played it several times. I was always a big fan of the Pitney song and never thought it could be improved upon but Eddi's take on it and the visuals are incredible and the change in lyrics works in my book. Think of this as a kind of reimagining to a classic. Its a classic all its own.

Not bad cover. Perfect voice for the song - very sexy, like a young Gwen Stefani. Thanks for not butchering this song like many pop stars do with classics. It's much appreciated :-)
Very innovative video and stirring rendition Eddi. You have a great voice! I still listen to Angels and Electricity CD. I would buy more of yours if I had a job!
This knocks the arse out of the original, I really like the ajusting of lyrics in this version. Gene Pitney version is kinda depressing, especially when you read about the film it was written for.
This is great ! No need to compare with Gene Pitney, just take it as it is. The female version of this song. Eddi has the vixen-vamp Modonna thing going for her. It hot !
Actually I like both the original and this vid however I like Eddie Readers version more only because it is more modern, she sings it superbly and it is very very sexy. I also love Scottish women. Eddie Reader is a dynamite singer easily as good as American greats like Ronstadt etc.

personally i dont think this is a good cover i think she killed the song!if id heard hers before gene's i wudnt have liked it, no one shud attempt this song its hard to make it sound good! xo
Good old Eddi...anyone remember her on the lottery show...it may have been with this very classic...she sang then released the balls and aid the immortal line 'It could be you...but its definately camalot!' such a witty fun lady
Ok just did a little more research into this little Gaelic lady. Actually she is fantastic. A lot of depth back there with her Scottish heritage. Man I love this stuff. BTW this is the best version of Town I've heard. I love her vibrato.
If I can put my tuppence-worth in, it was a shock for me to hear her do this initially! But taken in the context of the album it came from, it makes perfect sense! She's singing about her hometown of Glasgow here! I suggest you all search out "Candyfloss & Medicine"!
Umm one of my favorite songs, I remember when it first came out when I was 13. Gene is awesome. This chick Eddi Reader is awesome. I've never heard of her and that's what's nice about youtube. Jbrew she goes flat when??? Who the frick cares?? What for a nanosecond. Everybody sings a little off jack it's the engineers in the studios that bring it back. Do you really know what yer talking about.
She's cool has a fresh voice with some nice sexy innocence.
THIS IS PERFECT. I have never heard a flawed note from this woman's vocal chords. Supremely talented (check out all her excellent work as a member of the late '80s group Fairground Attraction, such as the classic "Perfect").
HI eddi reader here... what a blast it was making this ... I changed some words in my arrogance because I wanted it to be less about a young couple in love but more about every single human being in this world born loving and putting up with the world and its shadows of violence, oppression, trauma and hate..... sorry Pitney fans for not sticking to the exact words. But he did inspire me. THANKS FOR WATCHING!
@jrdouglas This song is meant to be a gritty wail of angst, sung by a rebellious youth who feels the world is against him. This vapid version sucks the life right out of it. Showgirls? Vamping? Why? The lyric "We're like tigers in a cage" expresses the angst beautifully. Replacing it with the meaningless "We're like flowers in a cage" is an insult to intelligence. You sing well, Eddi, but you've turned this classic into an insipid puff piece. It's AWFUL.
all due respect I have to totally disagree with you. the vampy sex is already inherent in Gene's original. What could be more visually appropriate during the instrumental break at 1:52?
the video story told here underscores the theme in the lyrics of a world of sleaze and power and gossip that sometimes ruins innocent people's lives.
anyhow you can't blame Eddi for the video itself which was probably conceived by someone else. I agree some of the word changes are not needed.
Hey dude relax....Did you ever stop to think that Eddi was using this song as a different expression than the movie....No ya didn't did ya....Ok...whatever the motivation was or the concept was this concept is great.....I love the small smoky jazz band kinda gig that's going on thing that happens...It's sexy, cool and musically awesome...Eddi, you rock...
@jrdouglas Ok, if you are really Eddi Reader....Then you are fricking awesome baby....Don't ever quit singing...I love your voice and you beat Pitney by miles....don't know who produced this vid but he/she is great....But sweetheart you are the best...and I know my music...Are you on FB??
She has a good voice I'll give her that but what the hell is she singing? "Ours is such a evil age? Were like flowers in a cage"?? I think it would be better if she learn the song before hand.
Fabulous video performance. Eddi Reader also made a great album/ cd of the songs of Robert Burns. Highly recommended. I saw Gene Ptney sing this a couple of years ago in Edinburgh and his 3 hour not perfect performance was breathtaking.
PERFECT !
I love Eddi !!!!
