It's also my favorite album, although I like all his stuff. Interesting interview clips - and nice to hear none other than Mark Steyn in his olden days asking the questions.
I have this album on vinyl - bought in the year it came out when I was living in the Philippines and (pre internet) away from all the adverse comment it got. I immediately loved it, and still do. The poetry of the songs has been overlooked - and I defy anyone who hears "Train in the distance" not to hum it for a week afterwards...
This is one of my favorite albums of his. I think it is badly overlooked. What draws me to Paul Simon is his lyrics -- his use of phrases that seem to make no sense on the surface but actually make a lot of sense with a little twist. What John Hyatt calls "An Uncommon Connection"....
"Think Too Much" comes up a lot in my life when I think people are overthinking! My Godson loved it when I sang "Cars are Cars". Don't know why it flopped -- I love about every track on it.
I bought this album shortly after the show at Georgia Tech (1983..maybe you were there too). The album was forgettable, but I'm gonna take another listen. Being a bit older and mature, I think I can appreciate it now. By the way, One and One Half Wandering Jews...Carrie Fisher was half jewish (her daddy Eddie). Bad period for Paul. She got the Ovation from the central park show in the settlement. I do remember Train in the Distance...I think of that song when I hear a train...in the distance.
The backing band in the "Hearts & Bones" TV special is comprised of some of the same band members from Simon & Garfunkel's Summer 1983 US Tour. The album came out shortly after the tour wrapped up, so I wouldn't be surprised if they filmed this TV special around that time.
I know its a shame but Hearts and Bones is the only Paul Simon album I never heard. It reminds me on a very cruel time in my life, so I think I'll never buy it, but it is fascinating for me to watch this and learn about that 'hidden album' in my life. Thank you for this possibility, Ellgee82!
I believe, though not sure, that this is a series of cut-ups from the commercially available documentary "Born At The Right Time" issued on VHS via Warner Music Video in 1993. If I am wrong, apologies - I have long lost my copy, some of the footage looks familiar.....
None of the footage in this part of the series is from the 'Born at the right time' documentary. They used the footage from a 1984 programme called 'Hearts & Bones', which is included here.
Ellgee, that was excellent, and given the various sources, wonderfully edited together! I like everything Paul does, but that period is probably my favourite, because it was 1982 that I became a fan,and Hearts and Bones meant so much to me as a 16 year old. How many, and what songs did Paul mime to on that H&B special?,and in the clip where he's wearing the blue??suit-Is that from the infamous Anne Nightingale interview? Wonderful!
Hearts and Bones is so underrated. I love the album, Song About the Moon is amazing, Paul's soft voice... I agree with CommonmanVideos, this period leading up to Graceland contains some of his best stuff. Thanks for posting, great job again. Five stars. :-)
Yep, Hearts And Bones is a stunning song. It's a pity that it's not better known. I've seen Paul live several times and it's disappointing that many people in the audience clearly don't recognise this incomparable song (nor Rene and Georgette...for that matter.) The best songs on H&B and Pony are as good as anything he ever wrote (which means, by definition, as good as anything ever written!)

Dave Weckl played drums on the 1983 Simon and Garfunkel tour of Australia. He probably was the drummer on the far east tour too.

why is Dave Weckl playing? did he ever tour with Simon?

Steve Gadd used his hands to play the drums on "Hearts and Bones"? I didn't know you could do that.
samsticka 2 years ago
Not sure if Steve Gadd used his hands during the studio recording - interesting! The drummer featured here is Dave Weckl.

Dave Weckl? Never heard of him. Is he any good?
Steve Gadd originally played on "Hearts and Bones".
samsticka 2 years ago
New York Jazz drummer filling in here on Steve Gadd's original recording - don't know much more about him.... Paul must think he's good.
Ellgee82 2 years ago
I guess Steve Gadd DID use his hands to play the drums instead of sticks. How else could he have gotten the sound that's on the track?
samsticka 2 years ago
@Ellgee82 Dave Weckl is considered by many to be one of the best drummers out there.

@samsticka Dave Weckl is about as good as they gets. Except for maybe Steve Gadd!

Terrific! Ellgee, who are you? Where do you get all this highly interesting footage?
I first heard "Hearts and bones" on the 91 tour, and it was one of the very few tracks in my life that got me on first hearing. Tremendous song.
Thanks for sharing this.

I Bob Dylan had been there, Joan would have never answered the phone.
I'm glad it was Paul there and not Bob.

Hearts and Bones is a beautiful, beautiful song. I never heard any other person record this song. I first heard it in 1983 and was just blown away.
