Even though she was an Atheist god bless her!!! I don't care what people thought of her Butterfly McQueen was a great actor and appeared to be a sweet person!
And 6 years after this was filmed she died a terribly painful death, when a kerosene heater or lantern she attempted to light malfunctioned and burst into flames, catching her clothes on fire burning her from head to toe. She managed to put out the fire then crawled outside and was taken to hospital where she died from third degree burns. She was 84.
Her voice is so annoying. In gone with the wind sorry but i just wanted to throw something at her. And sorry Butterfly, disregarding the racial prejudices of the time, you were low profile because you weren't that great an actress.

If she left Hollywood in 1949, she didn't stay gone very long. In 1950 she filmed 39 episodes of 'Beulah' playing the part of Oriole. Hattie McDaniel was apparently one of the people in Butterfly's life that just didn't like her, because Hattie insisted the role of Oriole be recast when she took over for Ethel Waters in the title role. At least that's her real voice. Ruby Dandridge sounded nothing like Oriole in real life. But as Oriole she sure sounded a lot like Butterfly McQueen....
It cannot have been easy to be so trapped as an actress in what you could do. It's a terrible price to have to pay to want to act. A highly talented and underrated star undoubtedly.
I met Butterfly in 1982, we had been pen pals for about 10 years. She was very sweet, quiet and graciously signed my copy of GWTW. May she rest in peace.
@Showbiz1192 Tragically, she died in December 1995 from burns suffered from a fire that was started when she tried to light a kerosene heater at her home. She was 84.
@Lozie82 - interesting that you should use "Oh my God" to exclaim!!
As a Christian, I believe there is hope of a life to come and even if this life has had racism and other hardships, that is a great hope.
So for someone that has experienced these things, it would be a greater end than just live through it all and then just die. The End. But we all are entitled to our own choices...
What she did not mention was that she had a recurring role on the old Jack Benny radio show. I have listened to many of them and she was on it and never failed to break the audience up.
she was weak you can tell by the voice. She should have spoke like that and learned to be TOUGHER and deepn that voice.. She had a chance. thats all people WANT is a CHANCE...she was an idiot. A lot of people are type casts. She was my favorite one I liked her character best of all. She was comic relief, so cute in GONE with the WIND. She should have used the money to invest in her career to make more money. Screw the furniture buy used
@WonderWomanFan4life Yeah...and that's why you're commenting and we are watching a video posted of her. Like someone's voice has something to do with their toughness....fucking idiot.
You missed the point. I LOVE this lady. She was adorable and I guess she still is. if one listens to this you could percieve it as being very negative and that she had a bad experience. However, maybe she did and maybe she didnt.. It seems she didnt like it there very much. I would have used that voice for as much as I could have. But in my opinion she was not very smart. hell at least she was working they liked her. Yes voice means A LOT. look it up.
@WonderWomanFan4life There is truth in what you say, as how we as people are overly judgmental on stereotypes. I have a very deep voice, and I have a tendency to intimidate people. You think I enjoy that? Hell no. I refuse to judge people by such petty measures. I think her voice is adorable and heartwarming. And another thing, even if someone talks "tough" or "deep," I smell bull crap a mile away.
thats because you have MELANIN and the ability to read people. Not everyone has that. I think that Butterfly was a lovely spirit. She was not as strong as Hattie McDaniel. Hattie stayed in Hollywood regardless of all the bs. She made it work for her. Butterfly didnt like her character nor her role and elected to become a SALESPerson over being a famous actress. They loved her in Gone with Win. Everyone has their thing. her money maker was that cute voice and sweet look.
@WonderWomanFan4life Okay....see now you have made a better case as to why you think she was weak in some ways...See you have given different examples and now I can respect your opinion far more. When you just equated her high voice with weakness, that seemed like a hell of a stretch. I have read that Hattie McDaniel did not like McQueen. McDaniel said that she thought McQueen whined too much. So maybe there is something to that. But her voice was adorable, though.
Her voice was/is gorgeous! It was her trademark. Much like how Hattie's trademark was her Mammy look. She was a character actor (P.C., S.A.G. Now calls actresses actors too) Marilyn Monroes trademark was her sexuality, John Wayne was the Cowboy type... Character Actors who are branded to portray similar characters but in her speech it seems that she didnt like that stereotyping. Back then it was basically all the roles they had. Today it is similar. yet many move forward
if you watch shows, movies today there is still that White superiority thing as she was basically saying. She said she vowed never to play those types of roles.Well unfortunately today many Blacks feel that hollywood has evolved and changed yet now Latinos portray the housekeepers mostly. The blacks play characters like Monique did in Prescious where we look stupid, broke, and need the help of whites to make it in life. Such as GreenMile, Pursuit of Happyness, Badger Vance etc
Butterfly well hell how can one be taken seriously with a name like Butterfly??? The situation was difficult and she decided to leave, opposed to leaving a mark on Black History. I mean this was during a time where black people were still segregated and trying to be respected. There are struggles today. Most of leading Black women are all heavy set Monique, Loretta Divine, Q latifah, Sherri Sheppard, Sonya Eddy, Dela Reese. There are a few THIN sexy Blacktresses
Look up Michael Goodrich Vocal Studios. You can train the voice to have various sounds. Butterfly could have trained to speak in that mousey voice for her acting work or change to another voice if she wanted to be more diverse. BUT they wanted that shallow, silly little shallow sound. that meant money for her. BUT i understand her feelings but its the same now. The Huxtables were the BEST and probably last time we will see blacks in such a great manner.
everyone has their thing. sometimes we want to be different. it seems its fair to say that Butterfly wanted to pay for furniture and Hattie was making a living as a actor. Hattie enjoyed acting more than cooking and cleaning for REAL. So in my opinion based on Butterfly's actions I feel that she was a bit WEAK. She is sitting her talking and all i heard was she rather be a sales girl than a pro actress and make money. So based on that I can say she is WEAK.
what if a LION roared like a sweet little kitty cat. purrrrrr. have you ever seen a lion who was big strong with a kitty cat voice? What about a TIGER?? Do tigers sound like kitty cats? What about a big DISEL TRUCK does it have a engine that sounds like a VW Beetle? What about Paul Robeson what if he had sounded like a woman? would the song Ole Man River sound the same? That song requires a strong voice? Think abouut it SALES lady vs hollywood actress. She was weak
@WonderWomanFan4life Your talking about the typical sounds of animals and motors....every human being's voice is different from another. If Paul Robeson's voice sound like a woman, we wouldn't know who he was because he would never had become a singer or actor, at least after 1927. You are quite shallowly judgmental about this person BASED ON HER VOICE.
I just found her story to be a bit WEAK. As if Sidney Potier didnt have to take crap in hollywood, or other guys like Sammy Davis Jr. What about Michael jackson?? They have roles, ways they want or ALLOW blacks to be. Some people will disagree but the stuff she is complaining about is going on right now in Rap music, R/B music, Films/Tv. Seriously they make Whites seem smarter than blacks. The love FAT black women we see them always. Thin black cant be sexier than a white chic
thats was all the work they were offering. So she went to work for MACYS as a dam sales clerk. She showed them.. They are still doing that bullshit today. she should have took them money, did the best to create and help the future actors. but all this WEAK silly talk. They sometimes do not see us as EQUAL. The brokest White trash thinks they are better than a black educated individual. So her leaving DID NOT CHANGE a thing. She should have just stayed stopped crying all the time
thats true. the screw that makes the most noise is always replaced everyone knows that. YOu could be white and be replaced. Hatie McDaniel knew how to play the game.
smarter than alot of ppl gave her credit for....her birth name was thelma, & she was given the name "butterfly" when she performed in an african american review (apologies for not remembering the name) because she was said to dance like a butterfly. when she tragically passed in a house fire, her will gave most of her money to an atheist society -- for most of her life, she was an atheist. classy lady, indeed. wonder what would've happened to her career if she'd been born 50 yrs later.
