@FantasticPickle We never sounded Italian. And this movie was sat in the mid-1950's. Puerto Rico was granted U.S. citizenship in 1917. We weren't foreigners by that time. In fact, even to this day, most Puerto Ricans don't know English.

I saw west side story in seattle today and was so looking forward to this scene! but they performed it with no guys and just the girls they also changed most of the lyrics it was really a let down

@airininthesky Actually, the original script of the show did not include the men. The movie changed the song, but the original writer of the song didn't like the change, so for one of the anniversaries of the movie it was preformed on-stage.

Besides, when you think about it, it doesn't really make sense that the lines are drawn so clearly by gender. All immigrants probably have inner conflicts like the one shown here, so segregating by sex seems a tad silly. (still an awesome song, though!)

yeah I didn't know that the original play had just the women singing because I saw the movie first but now I see why it was performed that way.

I realize that the gender versus gender aspect is unfair and not correct but for me it was more about missing the dance sequences on the mens side and the way Bernardo and Anita played so well off each other but I do understand your point :)
