sometimes i feel like she's just talking to me, she's such a natural actor and singer. so much fluidity between both. so amazing and inspirational when I watch her.
So Kathy says "my best friend had a little situation at the end of our senior year." At first, I assumed that this was the end of high school, because she's in her hometown and getting pregnant would be a bigger deal in high school than college. But that would mean 1) Kathy never went to college, 2) she's only about 20 at the start of the show if she spent a year before moving to the city, and a better part of the year with her ex. so now I'm thinking it's college. hm. what do you think?
@tellmewhatsahappenin you're so observant!! theres no where in the musical that says kathy's age, except that it's her birthday in "See I'm Smiling". I think it is senior year in college, especially because her best friend got a "little cute house on a little cute street" and i doubt a recent high school graduate would do that. and if she were 20 at the beginning of the show she would be 4 years younger than jaime, which isn't crazy but i always felt they were close to the same age.
Sherie Rene Scott is incredible. This song is damn near impossible to sing. Not only are the notes incredibly challenging, ranging from really high to really low, but the tempo is so strange and it's hard to keep up with. Jason Robert Brown can certainly put up a noteworthy challenge, and Sherie passed the test with flying colors. I wish I could sing like her. <3
@JennFan24 Sherie Rene Scott IS the original cast member, and the original voice on the soundtrack.... So Lauren Kennedy may be good, but she can't be better than the original.
@pyrobeast1994 Lauren Kennedy was originally cast as Cathy, and she did all the previews of this show. However, she had a work commitment in London that prevented her from doing the show when it came to New York. So, she's the original.
@JennFan24 I'm completely willing to admit to being wrong, and you are correct. I apologize for calling you out over the internet without having all of the information beforehand. ;-P
@pyrobeast1994 Though Sherie Rene Scott was the original Kathy in New York, & made the ocr, Lauren Kennedy played Kathy before her, when the show was produced in the Chicago area (& before a number of changes were made to the show, due to Mr. Brown's ex-wife's objections to aspects of it). When the New York production was being planned, Lauren Kennedy had the opportunity to play Nellie Forbush in a West End (London) production of "South Pacific," so she did that instead of "Last 5 Years."
Sherie Rene Scott is the single most under appreciated actor on Broadway right now (obviously I'm making a generalization but I really don't think it's too far from the truth). Her acting is 100% original and there is a humanity and sincerity to her stage presence which is enhanced and perfected by the earnest power and honesty of her incredible voice. The fact that Catherine Zeta Jones beat her out for the Tony is a crime - maybe CZJ can act, but there's a reason it's called a MUSICAL.
She says: "Oh! I wasn't paying attention. What exit was that? Oh... we're gonna be there soon. Are you hungry? Are you sick of me yet? (laughs) Anyway..."
@zkniajanskaya They're riding along in a car together. I believe they're on the way to her house (later in the song she says "when we get to my house, take a look at that town..."). I assume JRB was filling the moments in between verses in a clever way. She had gotten so wrapped up in telling Jamie about Carol Ann and Michael that she forgot to pay attention to where they were going.
Sherie possesses the epitome of spontaneous acting in every piece she sings... it's spectacular watching her. Every time I hear her sing, I get all verklemmpt and I think to myself, "My God, just a second ago, there was silence, now I'm so involved in what she's singing and I can't even describe what it is that's drawing me in!"
Not so sure I understand how she can be getting up and walking around at the end when she is clearly supposed to be driving in a car with Jamie. A bit of an oversight, I'd say....
I think they did that on purpose...she's supposed to be a bit plain...not as exciting as the 'younger, thinner' women she auditions against....and that catch Jamie's attention....
For some reason, I'm extremely intreagued by her over-abundance of lipstick. It seems perfect for Cathy. I mean, at this point, she's basically given up hope on men, but there's still that glimmer (quite literally) of hope in her. Sherie looks gorgeous.
yeah. And what's even stranger is that she doesn't have the overabundance of lipstick in any of her other vids. So maybe it WAS intentional...I like it =D
This song makes me cry when you think that at the same time they are showing how Jamie is falling out of love with her.....
