I half expected him to abruptly go "These men who seem to know my crime will surely come a second time one day more - I DID NOT LIVE UNTIL TODAAAAAY" and switch off between both Valjean and Marius
Michael would be a great Valjean. He actually have played the part before. He did it at Windsor Castle in 2004 for a Royal Command Performance.
The problem with THIS performance is the other singers. They are not on the same level as Michael, which makes the whole performance a bit weird and unballanced.
I would love to see Michael as Javert some day though <3
actually i liked him as jean valjean, i think he was a really strong voice. prefer him as marius of course, but if he can't play marius this is my second choice.
I wonder if Micheal Ball was like... 'you sang it wrong...' hm. you just KNOW he almost sang Marius' part every time. (jk) not the best performance. i'm glad Les Mis didn't turn out like this. still...i great song.
I don't think it's the best version of this song, but they were good singers and I like Michael Ball. I think I'm just spoilt hearing David Thaxton as Enjolras because he outsings everybody =) And yes, it's a bit wierd hearing Michael as Valjean, but not in a bad way.
i'm sorry... this just isn't right to me.....it's.....just....not, the only thing keeping me from disliking is A: i can't hate michael Ball..... B: the thenardiers are hilarious
hiya folks. calm down! this is a live performance. simply a show and this show wasn´t staged for being filmed. definitly not. what a huge audience and huge stage. everything needs to be bigger and a stage like that. Well, ok, they all missed the last breath6phrase, but I would honestly think, it´s just a performance for this show. Looks really like comming together of good singers, tributing a great musical. This is not the show on stage. the videotaping ruins it. Honestly
And lastly, to all the idiots who can't appreciate Michael's joy on stage and prefer to interpret his enjoyment as being "full of himself" and arrogant and every other name you've posted, if he was all these things, than why is it he's known to be the nicest guy in musical theatre. Perhaps you think you have more intimate knowledge of this man than do those who actually work with him and know him? Take a look in the mirror and you'll SEE the meaning of arrogant.
As for Michael not doing as good an interpretation of Jean Valjean as Colm Wilkinson. One word: BOLLUCKS!!! His voice suits perfectly, and his acting is superb! This is a concert ... not the actual Les Mis musical ... get a grip folks. Nothing against Colm but Michael's voice is unbeatable. And by the way, Jean Valjean was not old and "wise" throughout the story...only at the end...make-up, wig to age him, and his amazing vocal control would beat anyone anytime.
@nvieira100 Michael has actually played Valjean. He did so in 2004 at Windsor Castle in a special royal command performance when the president of France visited the UK. Ramin Karimloo also performed in the show as Enjolras.
@06s091 Yes I know. I'm really sorry I wasn't able to watch his Valjean. What I was trying to say in my comment, is that this particular performance isn't the actual musical, was actually the end of his concert, and therefore, you don't expect that he would remain in character just for this one song, know what I mean? :) Love Michael Ball's voice and acting. He's superb.
@nvieira100 I love Michael Balls's voice!!! he is superb! He was sooo close to his Marius part each and every time!!!! :) great song! But this Eponnie isn't she in "Dr. Quinn - Medicine Woman" as Mira????
Michael Ball's voice overpowers everyone else's voice, because his voice is that much more powerful than the rest (by FAR!!!!), NOT because his mic was turned up higher. For those who insist otherwise, just watch the 10th Anniv Concert performance ... Michael's voice was the only one that could be heard above anyone else's. Do you really think his mic was turned up higher for that performance as well? DUH!
I think Michael is singing Valjean because, he is the only one of them who can. He out-sings all of them.
Actually Michael have played Valjean. He did it at a special royal command performance at Windsor Castle in front of the royal family, the french president and about 200 invited guests. (In 2004)
I wish I hadn't watched this. Seriously. It left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Pretty much everyone here was pretty embarrassing. They don't know the lyrics and they sound like they haven't rehearsed at all. And that dude playing Marius needs to calm the f*** down.
I like Michael Ball, and I don't like to be confronted with the fact that he's such a smug jerk. Again, I wish I hadn't watched this.
i think hes just fuling his ego i (L) michael ball but you can tell he has peoples mics turned down and his up so he seems better than everyone else i really hate this vid i want it taken down it makes me sick !
Well...a big fan of Michael Ball, but true, this version just doesn't work! Ball's amazing, powerful as always, but it didn't go with the others. Don't think he looked aloof here, just...kind of..enjoyed himself. Marius...sucks. REALLY. His mouth, his face..looked funny. Michael BALL will always be the best Marius. Full stop.
I agree, it's enjoying himself. It's like they're just singing it in a living room or just as friends, like a get-together sort of thing (I can't think of how to put it in words)
cont....The fact is, Mr Ball is not a good enough actor to play Valjean. He has no depth and his eyes don't tell you anything. Of course he can sing, and I got the feeling in this act, that would have been just as happy if they had cut all of it out except for his lines and he could have just stood there on his own and belted it all out as hard as he could. On the other hand, if one surrounds themself with a bunch of below-average singers it doesn't do ones ego any harm.
I think he is a good actor, as you can tell from when he plays marius... but if I'm honest I think its his voice itself which isnt right for Valjean, I can't sort of put my finger on it... but he just doesnt sound right for Valjean
yeah thats true enough, I don't like Valjean when he sounds high and clear either (like Drew Sarich, although he is an amazing singer) I like Valjean to sound old and wise
Cosette was good, I felt I wanted Marius to succeed but he really didn't, poor Eponine was a bit grating but I think she actually sang ok and the Thenadiers got painfully upstaged thanks to the producer and Mr Himself.
I totally agree with all of the above comments, but I have heard those alternate lyrics sung on stage. In some versions, it is the finale to Act 1, and sung at the end when they come out to bow (I know it was in our one). Javert was alright, and the Thernadiers were awesome
I usually love this song and this Musical but this version that seemed overwrought and so intense, that no one on stage made much sense. Michael Ball seemed arrogant and cocky which is not attractive and the strange head movements ? They needed rehearsal and Javert loused up everything and is a disappointment. The only ones that seemed to put any effort into this at all was the Thénardier's, the most despised characters of the whole musical. BTW This song NEVER was the Finalé of the musical.
@nufc2k10 I agree Frances is amazing but when you watch the 10th Anniversery all you can here is Colm, Michael and Lea (who is louder then everyone else)
The problem with this live version is that Michael Ball is over-mic'd and it throws the balance out. Not to mention he forgets the words towards the end and then the timing goes.
They ruined this great song, what the hell are those Egyptian head movements by Ball? He isn't singing, he feels he is above all of it already; yet, sadly, he is not.....
What the hell is that dodgy Madonna look-alike doing to Eponine's part. And whilst I think Michael Ball is great, he is a) being a smug prat in this and b) has completely missed the subtlety that makes JVJ great. Cosette isn't too bad, Marius is horrendous and Javert got the words so wrong that it sounds like he's warning that the rebels will have a period. Not too impressed.
Michael Ball is too impressed with himself. This rendition licks a bum's nutsack. Colm is, was and will forever be THE Valjean, not this mic-hoarding excuse for Donny Osmond.
who are this cast, they cant be current because the Thenardiers are really old. There is a tradition in Les Mis of actors playing a number of characters in it through there career (Lea Salonga was Eponine then Fantine and Drew Sarich was Javert then Valjean) But i hope Michael Ball never gets cast as Valjean. This rendtion really wasnt good there's meant to be balance not a mic hogging Valjean!
Most of these people on stage are all great singers, but their timing at the end "one more dawn, one more day..." is awful!
And also, i know im being rotton about it, but the actor who is playing Marius has terrible ways to show breathing on stage! He breathes so big (shoulders)!
but on to the possitive! Michael Ball! Simply AMAZING! a better Marius then Valjean, but he was wonderful!
I agree with him being a better marius, and I found it amusing that he said the finale to les mis, as he knows perfectly well that it is not. Colm Wilkinson will probably always be Val Jean for me.
Colm Wilkinson fits better Valjeans character it's mature interpretation and vocals match perfectly Victor Hugo's projection of a haunted and strong Valjean... don't get me wrong though Michael Ball is a great interpreter I just don't think it can be compared to Wilkinson's performances... Ball was amazing as Marius on the 10th anniversary.
seems Ball was loving being the centre of this, just look at how he is when not singing. also like he was trying to sing as loud as humanly possible, and for him that means no one can literally be louder
OMG! I'm abslolutely horrified by their performance. Valjean and Eponine were awful. Imust rigt now listen to Colm Wilkinson to erase their voices from my head!
They are ALL, including Michael, horrible, terrible, almost killing one of the most beautiful and powerful music of Les Mis.
Colm Wilkinson will always be THE Valjean. Nobody else plays this character like him. And this Eponine, damn it !!!! Please help us, where's Mrs. Ruffelle?
True, yes they are. True, no it's not. Call me a stickler for casting, but while they are amazing in what they do, many of them are rather lame in the roles shown here.
Honestly, I think Michael just enjoys hollering at the top of his lungs. Yep yep.

Michael Ball is too impressed with himself. This rendition licks a bum's nutsack. Colm is, was and will forever be THE Valjean, not this mic-hoarding excuse for Donny Osmond.

vaya !! esta ves como Valjean , no como Marius.....
MIGUEL2005LIMA 2 years ago
who are this cast, they cant be current because the Thenardiers are really old. There is a tradition in Les Mis of actors playing a number of characters in it through there career (Lea Salonga was Eponine then Fantine and Drew Sarich was Javert then Valjean) But i hope Michael Ball never gets cast as Valjean. This rendtion really wasnt good there's meant to be balance not a mic hogging Valjean!

they all look very arrogant and smug

wow. shockingly bad. they shouldn't have been allowed to butcher such a great song.

Colm Wilkinson will probably always be Val Jean for me.

who is Javert
thegaythespian 2 years ago
He is a great singer, but definitely a Marius, NOT a Valjean

Too old for Marius now. He hardly looks like a young lethario, let alone sounds like one. Too mature!

hi hi, is this from a DVD?

Is Marius in this on Jeff Leyton?

Eponine was shocking!! Loved Michael Ball tho!! I think he should be Sir Michael Ball!!

Ball was amazing as Marius on the 10th anniversary.

abc123abc123youme 2 years ago
not a fan of eponine.
seems Ball was loving being the centre of this, just look at how he is when not singing. also like he was trying to sing as loud as humanly possible, and for him that means no one can literally be louder

marius shit!!!!

I think Micheal Ball was amazing in this, his "One Day More!"-s at the end were much more powerful than Colm Wilkinsons
nekwera 2 years ago
OMG! I'm abslolutely horrified by their performance. Valjean and Eponine were awful. Imust rigt now listen to Colm Wilkinson to erase their voices from my head!
Pavlinek123 2 years ago
horrible!
simbob987 2 years ago
They are ALL, including Michael, horrible, terrible, almost killing one of the most beautiful and powerful music of Les Mis.
Colm Wilkinson will always be THE Valjean. Nobody else plays this character like him. And this Eponine, damn it !!!! Please help us, where's Mrs. Ruffelle?

Actually that was pretty ridiculous. You couldn't hear anyone else! Maybe it was a mic issue?

elliottmajor 2 years ago
Valjean ? You must be kidding ! Colm Wilkinson did it so well, how can you even think of replacing him by anyone else, no matter who ? ^____^
Meiroh 2 years ago
Jeff Leyton is always over shadowed by Colm, but he was pretty amazing.
Supercreck 2 years ago
no i mean in this performance. No one compares to Colm for ValJean, but here the marius is awful. just clearing tht up so you dont think im weird ha
elliottmajor 2 years ago
Ok. He's Marius. Not Valjean
sovietmonobrow 2 years ago 11
Then I agree I don't think I'd cast that guy as Javert. Not that he can't sing. He just doesn't have the Javert look.

Great song. and great video.
Just not as good in suits and dresses.

"Do I die and do I dare?" Aah, to heck with this, the casting is all fouled up. Lame Marius. Amazing Marius turned lame JVJ. Lame Javert.
6x9equals42 2 years ago
This isn't a performance of Les Mis. It's just a concert. They are all amazing singers.
nkennedy09 2 years ago
True, yes they are. True, no it's not. Call me a stickler for casting, but while they are amazing in what they do, many of them are rather lame in the roles shown here.
