The acoustic version of this song (on yt) is even more poignant and beautiful in my opinion, you can truly enjoy the ingeniousness of the the beat/melody/lyrics there, but I suppose it's the only one I'd find very hard emotionally to listen to live. What it must mean to them I can only imagine
@MOTHIKAS You're the one being a pretentious cunt. Seriously, he didn't do anything wrong. He was comparing this song to another band that he knew. And even if you thought that was kind of a tool move you don't have to say it. You're the one acting like his thoughts aren't worth speaking. YOU'RE being the pretentious cunt here.
@zzply honestly i understand him, fanboys like alternativepal are always making comparisions with other band's songs, probably he didn't did research and though that this song was a radiohead rip-off, but it isn't simply because this song was mada before. however i think that the "tired of fags..." part was unnecesary.
@142ldiferALTl144 i just didnt like his reference to the song sounding 'very Radiohead'. Radiohead back in 1994/95 were nothing more than a U2 wannabe band.I have no time whatsoever for hipsters who think that the sun shines out of Thom Yorke's arse.Radiohead are one of the most torpid bands in rock history imo,and its thanks to them we have had to endure easy listening piano shite like Coldplay,Keane ect for the last 10 years.
@MOTHIKAS True, but thanks to Radiohead we have OK Computer or Kid A, which are easily the best albums of the past 15 years. That's why the sun actually does shine out of Thom Yorke's arse. Course there was a time when the sun shone out of Richey James's arse too...
@Colliermoose Ok Computer is in my opinion, one of the most overrated albums in rock music history.People have been told for so long that it is brilliant, that they just shrug their shoulders and accept it as fact.I however DONT.Another reason i despise Radiohead is that they clearly inspired horrid bands like Coldplay,Keane, and all the other naff piano rock shite that has infested festivals and charts for the last 15 years. MERRY XMAS
@MOTHIKAS In my opinion it deserves the attention. I genuinely think it's toweringly complex and beautiful, but if you're told something's 'the best thing ever' before listening to it, it can raise you're expectations to no limits. I listened to OK Computer before I really knew anything about music, and it blew my balls apart. This album is similarly excellent, but VERY underrated by the public. But I think we can all agree that Coldplay and Keane are crap (gay even). THANKS YOU TOO
I think it's really sad that if you Google the lyrics of this song, a lot of the results will be Pro-Ana blogs. I doubt that was what Richey intended when he wrote this song.
Everybody should dislike this song. I like it, but eating-disorders are so horrible. Dislike this video wouldn't mean "I dislike the song", it would mean "I hate what it's talking about".
It is so sad to see people very skinny, who thinks they are still fat and need to lose more weight, again and again and again.
You can hate what it's talking about but it happens everyday and talking about it can help the men and women cope with the effected it gives, eating disorders. For your information overweight and obese people can be anas too and die just as easily, it's not just skinny people.
@somedayLAsomedayGC I know it is a horrible subject but it raised (and still does raise) awareness of the subject and makes people less afraid to talk about it and their problems. As nikkituckernedda said, it really helped her. I think if Richey knew it had helped at least one person, he would be very very happy and so he should be. The Manics to me are more than just a band. They have a purpose, they write some beautiful but haunting music and bring causes to awareness that others don't :)
@pkightley yes I think about it now and what I wrote is a bit stupid, I realise. You're true, music helps people. But still, I didn't talk about the song, more about the disease.
I can't help shiverring when he sings "I wanna be so skinny that I rot from view"...
This is a horrificly beautiful song. It's like that work of art that horrifies you but is just so beautiful and thought bringing that you just must have it.
@hyllaf I recall a mid-90s BBC - or possibly another British channel - documentary about a young woman who was bulimic - binge eating packets and packets of crisps and bedridden most of the time. I think it was called Charlotte's story. Not been able to find it on YouTube but it always stuck in my mind as one of the saddest things I'd ever seen.
@lexxfive i just finished all five parts, thank you so much for exposing me to that, ive always wanted to be a psychologist, and that documentary was so fucking powerful i know what i want to be now, it literally slapped me in the face and gave new value to my life, now i just have the urge to help others come to where ive come, i kinda rambled but thank you so much,
...Oh yes, people alway seem to think it's just any kind of disease. But Richey showed through the lyrics of this how this intended gradual suicide and the knowledge of being seriously ill can coexist. The lyrics are so intense and shocking...like Maynrd James Keenans "The Package" and "Weak and powerless".
i was 15 when this song meant the world to me, someone finally understood what i was going through, richey made my head make sense.
It wasnt about being skinny, it was about extreme self control, my mum actually did feed me roast beef and only eat a ryvita, creepy huh? anyhow, i nearly died, i stopped counting when i got under 80 pounds (under 4stone), blackouts and advil were a daily routine. i'm 25 now, never thought i'd make it. I turned self control around to work for me not against me.
It's from an old documentary from the early 1990's about a woman who had anorexia and bulimia. It's her words. I "think" her name was Caroline, but don't quote me for sure. The videos are on youtube somewhere.
I liked this, the audio sync is a little off due to youtube upload but it still works. Some very nice images
in there, I loved the one at 5 seconds, the little crow
commenting that 'the end is drawing near', where did that image come from, is there an artist I could look up? I would loved to have seen/heard this played live more, I think they only played it during the X-mas holy bible gigs.
