  • FYI: Playing stops at 0:19. The rest is just fawning.

  • Hendrix was very overrated.

  • Jimi was tapped into the source of music on some cosmic level . With him it was largely intuitive.

  • joe isn't in the same building as jimi hendrix! ill just say joe does not have the talent and creativity that jimi hendrix had! don't get me wrong i like joe, but he doesn't compare!

  • dream on satriani!!!!

  • @BBAFAN001 Granted Jimi was an artist and a pro,but old Joe here is a real pro too

  • No offense Joe, but how I wish Jimmy were standing right there giving us that lesson...We miss you so much man...

  • Guys who rant about players being best never bother with what it is theyre best AT. "Playing guitar!" says metal-billie in the back. Get specific says I. Youre like hooligans rooting for home team. Good musicians have developed their style to serve different purposes and honed different aspects. All are better at something than somebody else or just personally unique. So many things you can be good at, so many reasons WHY. You cant speak of good or bad without speaking of premise and purpose.

  • People still haven't caught up to Jimi Hendrix.Listen to 5 versions of Little Wing and you'll hear something different everytime. He can sing a line and then play something completely different AT THE SAME TIME.You could tell his mood by the way he played a given tune.He wasn't playing the same stupid licks and well-rehearsed runs every time like 99% of todays players.Thankfully Jimi didn't spend all day staring at a metronome trying to impress people with his technique. It was about the music.

  • if you wanna play hendrix go get you a real strat first

  • What is he playing at the beginning? Is it a jam or part of Jimi's song?

    Sorry fo my English

  • Hendrix had his own inimitable style that is hard to duplicate in method or sound. In four years Jimi turned the entire music world on its ear. He's influenced masters from Miles Davis to SRV to Eric Clapton. From a purist's standpoint EVH might have the edge in technique. But Eddie's been regurgitating the same licks for 30 years. There is more range and inventiveness in Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower” than there is in the entire body of work of EVH.

    Haters gotta hate.

  • Acid, Shrums to open your mind, Cocaine to keep you going, Pot and Heroin to bring you down and watch the creativity pour out. Rock and Roll baby!!!

  • This is what i like about Hendrix, he breaks the rules and a lot of people dont do that... I dont know as much about Hendrix but im assuming he knew at least basics of theory because in order to break the rules you gotta know them, and i personally think jimmi was the best of all time, he was original and later became peoples example he was like a key to music, influenced many people.

  • A generation has come that has heard hundreds of guitarists who stand on Jimi's shoulders, and they wonder, what's all the fuss about? If they had the historical context of what was contemporaneous with Jimi, perhaps they'd understand. We didn't have anyone even near to him, and that was just the sound. But when you saw him too, the effect was awe-inspiring. (No MTV) Hendrix' effect on me was like what Satch describes, though he took it much further than I. Jimi founded modern electric guitar.

  • you have the biggest amp in youtube ...

  • Hendrix was very influential, but his guitar skill was shit.

It was just shit coated in candy (Distortion)

  • @ricflair1 Let's hear some of your output bigmouth.I bet you know all about shit as you are full of shit. Ric Flair sucks by the way,over-rated peroxide big mouth,Brett Hart shits all over him.

  • @ricflair1 You really have'nt listened to hendrix have you!

  • @ricflair1 you are funny! ... and deaf.

  • @ricflair1 Ugh...

  • EVH kills satch...and jimi too...

  • @StayFrosty5150 umm, no. i like evh and all, but hes stuck doing the same thing over and over. lots of flash, no substance

  • I think he played 5 notes in this entire video haha, I wish he had played more although his story was very interesting! :)

  • blah blah blah blah Hendrix blah blah.

  • Thought title said Satch show u how to play like hendrix?

  • too much talk, yeah, we get it, Jimi was great, please play!

  • talk less play more!!!!

  • Noo...I loved Jimi Hendrix.....lol!

  • Now let's do one on how to play like Vinnie Vincent! Who's with me!?

  • id love to see jimi with his timekeeping thing try to use a delay pedal, just sayin but reguardless itd still be sick

  • Joe plays very nice but this is not his style, so he better stay to what he realy knows to play and this is hiw own style.

If you want to listen "Hexdrix Style" guitar playing, listen to Uli Jon Roth.

  • just play like yourself :)

  • This is one of the best descriptions of Jimi ever explained. For all of those commenting on Jimi's ability, please be aware that this is Joe Satriani explaining why Jimi is so amazing.

For Joe to say, "Outer space delivered this to man to your doorstep" speaks volumes, and should be taken as proof that without Jimi, rock would be very different today. People like Joe understand this.

  • @MrTommySullivan Most people who rubbish Jimi go on about technique and speed. Thing is, Jimi can stop you dead in your tracks with one note whereas most speedfreaks sound like they are just practising scales. Jimi's playing blew music wide open and made the guitar cooler than an Afghan coat.

  • @wesmatron So true! I went through a shred head phase-Van Halen, Vai, Satch, Malmsteen, Petrucci, Rusty Cooley, Shawn Lane Gilbert, Moore n co but I always come back HOME to Jimi! I went through twenty years of scales, arpeggios, alternate pickin, legato thinking I'm on to something, then you hear a Jimi song and realize not one of these pyrotechnicians, speed demons, shred heads could hold a candle to Jimi's SUPERNATURAL playing. You can't notate or transcribe his style!

  • @wesmatron

    And Afghan coats are cool!

  • @Coppulor1 Indeed

  • how to play like joe satriani?

  • What does he play in the begining?

  • ROFL 95% of the people here would not be able to tell who is playing. I bet if this was dubbed with Jimi playing anything here but Joe in the video, people would still hate and say it sounds nothing like Jimi. Grow the fuck up.

  • why is he wearing a condom on his head?

  • I didn't know that Voldemort could play like hendrix

  • Joe and his guitar = one piece glued together

  • Bla bla bla

  • they should change the title to "joe satriani rambles about henrix for 4 minutes"...

  • Anyone who has ever tried to learn a Jimi Hendrix song knows that no matter how much you practice it there's somethimg so unique, genius and special about jimmi's style that you'll never be able to recreate. Also you'll find yourself thinking "this guy was a genius hoe the fuck he put this melodies together, how can anyone create somethig this beautiful." That's why Jimi is the best. Ther're faster and more technically proficient players than jimi but no one is more creative than him.

  • @sxc5rhcp Part of it is the fact that he played a right handed guitar flipped over, with his left hand. It meant that when he strummed you'd often get the high notes first. Try it some time. It sounds different and it makes the fingerboard look different. Different things jump out at you.

I'm not arguing with anything you said. Jimi was crazy creative. It's just a fun fact about his playing style. I'm always a little blown away and him and Albert Lee for doing that.

  • @sxc5rhcp Because, ya know, Creativity is a measurable thing :P It's not subjective at all :D

  • @sxc5rhcp John Frusciante has come pretty close! He's the closest I've heard to Hendrix.

  • @murfdog19 have you heard eric Gales?

  • @Carlosdamiano No. I'll have to check him out.

  • @sxc5rhcp ....hahahahaha thanks for that old man. You on a pension?

  • @sxc5rhcp haha loser.

  • @sxc5rhcp There are much better guitarist in every way these days, but Jimi is a legend, cuz of him it all started.

  • @sxc5rhcp You can say that about anybody...

  • The guitar is dead.

Study tickling the ass and roundrocks.

  • Amazing, but you sound like a fucking wanker killing a guitar.

How to play like Hendrix? Impossible. Work your ass off to create your own style.

    Fuckhead.

  • @Ariel62073 trololol

  • @sheldon227 Haha.. Learn how to play like yourself. Don't turn playing a guitar into math: How can I be like Jane? Apply the Jane algorithm. How can I be like myself? Devolop your musical vision over years by letting your inner substance take control.

Study Taoism, wu-wei, natural action. Apply that to guitar playing.

And never forget that it is only a sound-maker.

  • Everyone talks about what a great player Hendrix was (and he was), but in my opinion he was THE most innovative rock recording producer in history. Especially back then!

  • Why the fuck he always has that condom hat on?

  • Joe you would of dazzeled HendriX, your too cool.

  • Comment removed

  • We all have our own style people but if thousends listened to me that would blow my f***** mind and make my toes curl :p gotta love the legends i consider myself more of an artist and less of a crittic PEACE

  • wow, wherever you go to on youtube, there's always a lunatic present. But I'd never have thought to find the lunatic of the year in January already.

  • The thing about Jimmi and yes Eddie Van Halen is that most guitarrists Vai, Yngwie, Satch, they are purposely adding classical, jazz and other intricate stuff into their playing and that is cool but it is obvious. With Jimmi and Eddie, the thing is that they are not that disciplined in terms of technique, they are just having fun and sounding pretty cool without trying too hard to do it so it sounds very natural.

  • "shows" how to play like Hendrix. Don't you mean "Talks" about his influence?

  • its an insult when you tell someone their favorite guitarist isn't the best. if they actually think that person was the greatest player ever, then let them think so.

it's like telling someone's grandmother that her cooking is wrong because its not how you cook.

  • wtf is this

  • i couldnt give 2 shits about when satriani first heard hendrix. this video helped NOTHING!

  • @alvicious that my friend, is because you want that a guy tell you what to do, and you dont know who to absorved all the knowledge and later use it when you want to play ;)

  • @160895andy yes i want to know who to absorved all the knowlege and later use it when you want to play! maybe i'll listen to joe shitriani's story again.

  • @jonathan5008 you sound retarded! jimi was amazing! wow

  • LOL check out jonathan5008's profile hahaha this is one of his videos /watch?v=CVqIbC1CKlw&list=UUrEBUxsAQZphXH6mULRO-CQ&feature=plcp and he is obsessed with some chick in his other vids hahahahahahahahahaha

  • how to play like hendrix, lesson 1: get a strat.

  • LISTEN TO OLDER SISTER!!!!!!

  • Hendrix is the most overated artist of all times I was learning all of his songs but they are just...boring

  • @jonathan5008 YOU sir are seemingly the most ignorant person ever. Anyone can play guitar but it takes talent to be a musician. Hendrix was one of the most innovative, creative and talented musicians of all time. Not even Guthrie Govan can imitate Jimi. He was an absolute genius. All great guitarists were inspired by Hendrix. Hopefully you get out of the little "only shred metal is good" phase that you're probably in and become a musician. If you don't love Jimi, you're not a musician. Good day.

  • @jass820 I agree with you in the fact that Jimi is great, but saying you must LOVE him to be a MUSICIAN is just plain wrong

  • @88segovia Yes, perhaps I was just a bit angry for someone insulting Jimi's music haha. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. But I mean come on how can you not love Hendrix!? I'd say the majority of the truly gifted guitarists of today were inspired by him in some way, shape, or form. When I said musicians I'm referring to guitarists in this case BTW. The principle trumpet player in a symphony orchestra may not care for Hendrix, but is certainly still a musician! But in MY OPINION Jimi rocks!!!

  • @jass820 At that time EVERYTHING was innovative if it wasn't Hendrix it would have been someone else. The only thing Hendrix "did" was born first. Musicians exist since the beginning of times, when satan made his move he used the beatles and Hendrix etc. So fucking what , his "music" is like poison to the ears , a reflection of hell, black magic and voodoo. So NO , a true musician would never like Hendrix.

  • @jonathan5008 Please elaborate further on how satan 'made his move' and used Hendrix and The Beatles, and how it a refection of hell. I don't quite understand...

  • @youisretard He used music to control people to do evil things each genre has his own purpose rock is tied to satanism, hip hop to violence and drugs, pop makes young girls whores. The price of hendrix and the beatles was death and an eternity burning in hell. Here is a clue for you to understand, the word fire is used ironically to show that people will burn in hell one day.i'm sure you'll find plenty of songs like that.I can't explain everything here though

  • @jonathan5008 Because you like rock you are a satanist? No. I see what you mean but leaning more on the side of heavy metal or screamo in the lyrics but I don't understand how you can just label Hedrix and The Beatles like that. Where did you come up with this idea or here this and why do you think this because you are going from not liking certain musicians to saying that they are burning in hell and want to know, for what?

  • @jonathan5008 how did you come across this information? share a link maybe? btw, anyone can tell you're no older than 16

  • @riseofthefallen301 What information?

  • @jonathan5008 what you were stating in the previous comment: "he used music to conytrol people....price of hendrix and the beatles was death etc" did you read this somewhere or were you told so this sunday in church?

  • @riseofthefallen301 Oh that I can teach you if you want. Give me your email i'll give you information everyday so you can understand too

  • @jonathan5008 You could not be more wrong! Tell me, who do YOU enjoy listening to if you hate Hendrix? What about Jimi's music is so bad to you? BTW there is no Satan. If there is a god and he created life on this Earth, he certainly did not create the church or the bible (where Satan was introduced). We did that. Serious question here, have your parents ever mentioned the word "autism" around you?

  • @jass820 Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Metallica , Pink Floyd,Ozzy Osbourne and a lot more.If like you said there is a GOD why wouldn't he warn us about satan? And why demons fear the bible? Spiritual things are not your topic so just SHUT THE FUCK UP

  • @jonathan5008 He wouldn't warn us of Satan because Satan doesn't exist... That was what I said and you're retorted argument doesn't apply... Not important. How the fuck can you think Jimi is boring but Metallica isn't? Kirk Hammet couldn't carry Jimi's guitar case! All Stratovarius songs sound the same. At least you like Pink Floyd!

  • @jass820 Lol if you think satan doesn't exists I can show you him unless you are to afraid of spiritual things.Show me a song that is better than fade to black, nothing else matters, master of puppets, wait all the songs of metallica are better than any of Hendrix. If you think Stratovarius songs sound the same then youa re an average listener and not a muscician.Obviously your taste for Pink floyd means that probably you are from that era and your love from 70s 80s music blinds you.

  • @jonathan5008 Okay, that comment makes any other argument you try to make invalid. And I'm not from that era, I'm 18. Any Guthrie Govan song is better than anything you listen to. This whole thing had better be a fucking joke because if it isn't, I just feel sorry for all of your musical delusions and I hope you learn one day. Good day.

  • @jass820 zzzz this topic is getting old if I say jimmy hendrix is the best would you shut up? ok hendrix is the best guitar player.I hope you're happy

  • @jonathan5008 I SAID GOOD DAY!

  • @jonathan5008 Troll.

  • @jmaguerra Your mother

  • @jonathan5008 Bingo.

  • @jonathan5008 Btw, what was that Vegeta thing? Pretty neat

  • @jmaguerra The Vegeta thing is meaningless

  • @jonathan5008 I didn't ask what it meant, I asked how you did that

  • @jass820 Let him be. You actually wasted 5 minutes of your life trying to explain a moron what does 'Are You Experienced' mean? He's literally tone/music/sound deaf. And blind too. If you can't like Voodoo Child then you can seriously go and hit urself with guitar and die, trust me!

Anyways, no one can even come any close to Hendrix. What he did in 27 years of his life, no one can and no one ever will, considering the way today's music is going!

  • @vish11firefly I hope for his sake he learns.

  • @vish11firefly

you make it sem like he spent all 27 years influencing people and headlining fesivals and such..? didint his professional career last barley a decade and all his highlights are from like 66 to 70? i say hes done more money making and gaining popularity and influencing in the 41 years since his death than he did when he was alive

  • @jass820 ummmm not every great musician/guitarist was inspired by hendrix and just not liking hendrix music does not mean you are not a musician YOU SIR are one of the seeminlgy most ignorant and arrogant people ever what is your problem dude???

  • @Lincoln424242 Hi friend! Clever comeback! Come up with that one all by yourself? BTW "one of the seeminlgy most" is not grammatically correct! And I don't believe I was being arrogant at all! I never even mentioned myself, so I'm not really being arrogant here. You should know what words mean before you use them pal! But come on, name one great rock guitarist who hates Jimi! If you think you hate him, give his music a try. If you still hate it, well, I feel sorry for you. Have a nice day!

  • @jass820 Well considering Guthrie has a Hendrix style video, I'd say you are wrong about his whole "not being able to imitate Jimi" thing. Since an imitation is not a 100% accurate version, he is definitely able to imitate his sound, with a greater technical ability. Hendrix was sloppy and a lot of guitarists that want to play like Jimi don't like sounding sloppy, it's in their nature, that's why many guitarists appear to not have the ability to play like him.

  • @c0rnp0p5 Guthrie is my idol, and his ability to play in every style and impersonate guitarists so well is astonishing! I could mistake his playing for the people he's impersonating! But when he plays like Hendrix, something about his style is just not as accurate. You're probably right, its the way Hendrix could be sloppy, but in a good way. What made Hendrix so remarkable was not his technical ability (which is not a big factor of musicality) but his style and creativity! And burning guitars.

  • @c0rnp0p5

nice theory but no. the reason guitarists "appear to not have the ability to play like Hendrix" is because they CAN'T (they would)...that's ludicrous....Jimis hard to imitate style can be explained by reason (believe it or not). he had a piano style of chording; thumb on bass, freeing his fingers for chordal soloing. his phrasing was deceptive with sudden time changes, he'd come in on the 4, etc. sloppiness is a byproduct of poor timekeeping, which Jimi was a master at.

  • @daljin1991 Oh sorry Master, I wasn't aware that you were a close friend of Jimi's and new exactly how he played because he explained it to you first hand.

  • @c0rnp0p5 You don't have to know him personally to know how he played. He doesn't need to explain anything. Just listen. That's the best lesson any musician can learn!

  • @daljin1991

Thanks for getting that said here!

One add, besides that being the general concensus among the

best guitar players I know, they agree he was, at the same time,

trying to get his single note playing to sound like a horn.

Hence the "quest" for more & more sustain and "harmonic" feedback

without distortion. Like D.Allman at that time was also going for.

With todays gear, he'd be called the best.

  • @daljin1991 SRV could do it...

  • @MrOlliguitar

srv's style was WAY different from hendrix. He did covers justice, but in his own style

  • @jass820 WELL SAID

  • @jass820 that is an as narrow minded remark as the people who prefer shred metal.

  • @jass820 Bullshit. As much as I respect the innovation the Jimi had in guitar, saying that if you don't love jimi you're not a musician is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. There are literally millions of classical/jazz who have never heard of Jimi and if you don't call them musicians that makes you just as ignorant as the person you replied to. The taste in music works both ways. Hopefully you get out of the little "Jimi is the best" that you're probably in and become a musician. SeewhatImean?

  • @jonathan5008 tell that to any qualified guitarist..probably even your favorite... and they would laugh themselves to death

  • @lambgtr7 I laugh about all of them to death cause I'm the master of the knowledge in the universe but why would I waste my time trying to explain EVERYTHING to you if you can't understand but one day you too will understand.

  • @jonathan5008 weirdo. if this isn't trolling, you need see a psychiatrist cause you're a bloody fruitcake. .

  • @bazbonehead If you trust Psychiatrists then you are very stupid to talk with.

  • @jonathan5008 hahaha. delusion presents itself overtly. you are very closed minded. it doesnt make you stupid, it just makes you ignorant because you automatically close yourself off to further learning or understanding without ever cpmfirm the truth in your own beliefs. i suffer the same affliction, yet i am different cause recognise my tunnel vision and try and STFU when i feel it coming over me. its called bipolar & you truly believe you are correct, the logic can even stands up. but ur wrong

  • Is this supposed to be a lesson

  • @ambroisevalet notice that this is part one....

  • Jimi is still da man! Joe....were u and Steve watching the Tv show Kung Fu and listening to that show intro music too? Steve's piece 'For the Love of God' 's main melody sounds a lot like the Tv shows intro music. Are my ears wrong? thanks

  • you're balled too tiny an short " an don't play a fender Startocaster ! how do you know"

  • what a stupid fuck you are ! Hendrix set the pace for so many guitarist today, Satriani would say you are a idiot and obviously don't know you're ass from a hole in the ground.so why don't you take up a hobby like collecting aluminum cans on the freeway, you moron.

  • 4:08 long video and just 20 sec. of guitar playing

  • @metzbull He´s teaching you important stuff ... you´re just so lost to be able to see it.

  • hendrix was a composer which in my mind transcends being a shredder which is not a bad thing but technique should be a catalyst for helping you express yourself musically and if it doesn't do that then you've missed the point entirely

  • Thank the lord joe satriani didn't pursue a drumming career!

  • Never before or since has anyone ever touched Hendrix's phrasing and note choice

  • this is a lesson ?

  • The only Hendrix song I know how to play is "Fire" any other song by him would cause my fingers to catch fire

  • Comment removed

  • where is the second part of this video??????

  • Hendrix was the real "freaking tockstar from Mars" !

  • ah ok i watched this to watch you NOT play the guitar AT ALL!!

  • shut up and play the guitar !!

  • Okay, so now how do you WRITE songs like Jimi Hendrix?

  • @nottwozero you don't, he wrote what his heart and soul wanted to say. Don't underestimate your hearts quality. You can write songs just a good and expressive but different. Different because everyones hearts are different.

  • @Mattydilly I agree where Joe is coming from, because it is often forgotten that a guitar genius' skill, such as Hendrix's, is particularly unique and profound in the way that it is expressed. Hendrix wrote amazing songs AND played amazing guitar. He wasn't just a showman. Therefore technical proficiency disolves into the background when truly examining the greatest guitarists. In my opinion. It is also true that someone may feel more from a Satriani song than a Hendrix song, yes,

  • @Mattydilly Also, my comment was attempting to point towards the fact that whilst someone may wish to imitate Hendrix, they cannot completely encapsulate his whole talent and retread the ground he covered. So, essentially, I believe we agree. I don't actually want or xpect to know how to write a Jimi Hendrix song. It would only be possible from the man himself, obviously.

  • @nottwozero lol i got you.

  • He is prove that aliens really exist. All though eccentric like all great guitar players non sociative behaviour all over him. He and his guitars are all he could possibly love same as yngvie and many others

  • ibanez = epic fail

  • @guitarboy12123 LOLWUT

  • so.... about part 2....

  • satriani is good but i'm sure there are better guitar player to teach or talk about hendrix then he... and this video was nothing but blablabla ...

PS-only SRV could cover hendrix with the due talent and respect ^^ ..SRVs little wing is better than jimi's version to be honest even though i'm not a great friend of covers ^^

  • @RustyPease nope thats a silly comment what you said is opinion not fact so don't state as such. If you think SRV is better and that Satch is not the person to talk about it thats fine for you but its not a gospel truth is just what you think so do not talk like your opinion matters because who are you?

  • @thomashamilton3rd ...i am someone who hasnt noticed anything related to teh title of this video, maybe you Mister-seem-to-know-better can show me in which part of the video he showed how to play like hendrix...and what he said was nothing new nor interesting about hendrix i didn't hear years ago .... ^^

  • @RustyPease lol i love srv but listen to hendrix play little wing live at winterland. SRV cant duplicate that soul

  • @Mattydilly you're right man. the solo off the winterland version is mind blowing

  • @electricladyland91 check my covers out, I'm not on the level bt I'm better than the covers you see on youtube.

  • Stoned Voldemort.

  • Joe Satriani plays super!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • learn the basics then find your voice using your emotions and experiment, you can listen to hendrix without hearing hendrix, if you can ride his trip and grab some of it for yourself use it to improve your playing, there is no secret method to playing it all comes from you and you only, we can only speculate but never understand what goes on in someones head..

  • Satch is a stoner. Who knew?

  • @Glockenator If you read any interviews with im I think he was just really really excited to do this... but who knows!

  • This guy talks a lot, without saying anything, doesnt he ?

The actual facts about Hendrix, goes between cliches and rubbish. ( Scale talk, etc ).

  • @blooperjohn THis is the dumbest comment ive read on youtube to date. You Obviously havent heard a lot of Hendrix. Holy SHit.. Never heard Him Play Atlanta, Newport pop festival. Royal Albert Hall, Maui, i can go on and on.. THe blues album, the Crash Landings album, Electric Lady Land album, man please. ALL of that are classics. And Him with Buddy was sucked? Yo who are you? Youre fuckin crazy! Machine Gun? They dont know? Earth blues? Sucks? If i was your parent i would of put you on time out.

  • didnt know joe does drugs

  • didnt know joe does drugs
