wow you got to hang with Holdsworth and just be regular? That's the coolest thing I've heard all week, even tho it was 20 years ago I'm sure it makes you smile. Made me smile just now. A Baritone !? No THAT is something I'd really love to hear !
I love baritone guitars. Man thanks for sharing. Holdsworth!
@stillphil i've hung out with allan 3 times, he's really down to earth and affable, chilin' with a wine and a cig between sets, i like that he talks to fans! good solo on this one!
I saw Holdsworth, Wackerman and Berlin play at a Denver, CO club in '82 and it was the most exhausting musical experience of my then life. I was overwhelmed by all that I heard and saw. It was a good thing.
I am no Drummer. Can anybody please explain what is wrong with Wackerman? I personally like his sound, his exactness and the tightness. To my mind, he's one of the best, AH has ever been playing with...

Chad Wackerman should not be mentioned in the same sentence asBill Bruford, Gary Novak, and especially not Vinnie Colaiuta! He's really good, but he's not really great.
Unbeknowest to most, Alan is a great proponent of moshing, feeling it symbolizes the disparate attempts to formalize the Nietzschesque Angst of existence in prototypical creative impulse manifestatory creationalism.
@stillphil That is what makes Allan so cool. A totally innovative style that has influenced many and is still humble enough to talk shop and have a few beers with some fans. I met him and talked him to death back in '90 or '91. What a cool and polite guy. I was still buzzing from when he peeled back my cap with a baritone Steinberger. I had never seen such a long neck on a guitar before. I think it was a Steinberger. Chad was there and Steve Hunt too. Great show.
Chad Wackerman was good enough for Zappa and to make drum duet albums with Terry Bozzio. Holdsworth is everywhere on the jazz rock scene in the seventies. Brilliant.
i adore the way he says "sorry 'bout that" at the ends of songs - the self-effacing genius at work - no matter how great it is, it's never good enough for him...
a chick in the audience. I bet her partner told her we're going to see rihanna ;-)

I've never heard Holdsworth repeat a single lick! It's always different - a true free-styling improviser.

I wonder how Allan first thought of how such a sound was possible to come from a guitar? It never ceases to amaze me.

all those big words yet you managed to spell Allan's first name incorrectly even though it was in the title of the video. Kudos.

LoL @ the bored girlfriends in the crowd!
Props to the girls that support even when they "kinda don't get it".
Would love to see Alan brag...ONCE !
But he's the man humility and all.

I much prefer Gary Novak on drums in this band. Chad's a bit limited musically.
CharleeVee 3 years ago
Yeah Chad's not so much to my taste. He is a monster tho.
beanabus77 3 years ago
Yeah, Chad's really limited. That must be why Zappa hired him out of about a thousand drummers who didn't last 15 seconds before hearing "next!".
pbanders 3 years ago 11
@pbanders lol....yea, Chad is one of the most diverse drummers of all time...without a doubt.

He thought himself a not so great guitarist at the time he wrote this with Tony (75). He apologized for that too. Goofy genius!
