As good as the Shins, Modest Mouse, and Porcupine Tree are, they are not great. This is great. Sorry, game over.
there is still good, even great music happening today but it doesnt get the air-play that these classic rock bands did/do still. Kids today still appreciate fine music, and they are the ones who know where to find it.
Hey you guys! Touched by all your comments about my post, it means a lot to me. Those of you in US and Canada will get the chance to see their Autumn Tour, check out the datesShine On Winter sun! Shine On Everyone, forever!
Well it is a great Fall/Autumn then as the Strawbs, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, and Deep Purple are all still playing and producing new music. They had a special something then and some of that has carried over to today. Go see them all it is more than nostalgia. I think the Strawbs have indured with a love for the music, not just the money. Strawbs have better stood the test of time than the Hair Bands of the 1980's. Keep rocking Dave Cousins!
This comes from the album "Hero and Heroine", which I first heard when it came out in the 1970's. I love the whole album for its beautful melodies, tones and lyrics. Dave Cousins is undoubtedly one of the UK's best songwriters.
What a tremendous band. I can always go back and listen to these guys. Incredible musicians. I grew up with this band and many more like them. The music of this generation, had so much meaning to all of us. I have fond memories of this era. I'd put this music on and let them take me to wherever. It was magical. Thank-you for this wonderful video ESaetre.
@YourDenverGuy commercial crap always existed and may always, but good music can always be found.change is inevitable. You either accept it or dwell in the what was......Deep purple is still together- the who put out endless wire in the 2000's and other bands are still around....bands like minus the bear and up and coming bands like transit and think big....you just have to look....I don't watch commercial tv nor do I listen to the radio- we all have a choice peace
@YourDenverGuy Why does EVERY YouTube video for any song more than twenty years old have to say "this was good, modern music is crap"? (Always citing either Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga as evidence.) News flash: there was shitty commercial music in the '60s and '70s too. Don't blame Kids These Days; you'll just sound like your parents.
@YourDenverGuy The new Generation also has Muse, Porcupine Tree etc..... We had the Archies, The Osmonds etc...... Every generation has it's Diamonds and Turds!
OMG!!! I haven`t heard Strawbs in more than 35 years. I`d forgotten how great they were. I had all their music on 8track and couldn`t get enough of them, Pink Floyd and Genesis.
The bands of this era were so good. Their music puts todays music too shame. PINK FLOYD, YES, GENESIS, ELP, RENAISSANCE, JETHRO TULL, MOODY BLUES and last but never least THE STRAWBS, pure class. I'm sure there sure i've missed many more, but my point is that they don't make music like they did during this era. TIMELESS!!!!!!!!!
@lismclis51 Yes pet, you're so right! They played their own instruments, sang their own songs and didn't have to drown it all in 'thumpthumpthump!" LOL! Many of them are still better as old rockers than many younger "musicians".
@lismclis51 Yes, they DO!!!!! before you give up hope, first listen to Barclay James Harvest (from the 70s and 80s) and then Pendragon, IQ, Porcupine Tree, Twelfth Night, Pallas, Mostly Autumn, Pineapple Thief, Fleet Foxes
Allowing for influences, Strawbs exist in an alternate universe of their own creation and this song puts 99.99% of pop music of any era to shame with its shining beauty. It cannot be played loud enough (your neighbours may disagree). For any young people lucky enough to find yourself here: THIS is EPIC.
When I first put the needle down on my new LP back in the 70s I immediately heard an autumn storm coming. The start of this piece of music really sounds like autumn in Canada. Snow's on the way -- watch out!
I remember my brother getting this album back in the mid 70's. It's still one of my favorites and I listen to quite often. With the advent of modern technology and stereo systems it sounds really great especially in the car.
I am trying to convince myself that i find the music of Strawbs, Jethro Tull, Manfred Man... etc... out of nostalgia. But, this is great music. And there were loads of great groups and singers. Today ? There are great groups, but Internet illegal downloading killed originality. Labels no longer encourage originality. And, today's radio stations will not play 8 minutes songs. When was the last time you heard Color my world as part of the whole suite it belongs to ?
Great song. I was lucky enough to see The Strawbs three times in the last few years and they have been excellent. And very approachable. And the new stuff is quite good too.
My BFF got married in 1982 and this was the first dance song....I swear nobody got it except her friends and we were all so high and love was everywhere but we were sad in our hearts because she married the wrong guy and we knew it all along...but man....this song almost made it so right..just for a moment it was so right
In its style, this is perhaps the greatest song to evoke emotion and make us simply feel, letting us be human. the winter long I will always be with you... Well done Strawbs. Happy holidays everyone.
yikes. sitting in the Victorian farmhouse, headphones on, looking out the arched windows as the soft falling snow glitters to the dark street below. There is a feeling in this song that transends 30 years of loves and heartaches. It's lonely and comforting all at once...how amazing.
This evokes the essence of autumn just as effectively as the famous Keats ode does, or Beatrix Potter's Squirrel Nutkin does (which the young C.S. Lewis claimed contained the idea of autumn). This song is one of the most haunting things I've ever heard.
I was privileged to see the Strawbs on the Hero & Heroine and Ghosts tours, and I can easily relate to many of the sentiments of those who have commented on this track.
It is autumn right now and everything described in this song is happening. What a perfect time to hear this perfect song that gives me chills every time I hear it, especially the last 3.5 minutes.
The last part of "Autumn" has been bouncing around in my head for decades now. Simple beautiful tune with fantastic words and wording. Incredible the talent of this group on this album.
LOVE THIS ALBUM!! Thanks for the tracks! (Know this album inside out - saw Strawbs once at a musicfestival in Danmark (Mitfynsfestival) - It was GREAT!

Like isn't strong enough a comment . . . even love maybe not. I saw the Strawbs in Winter 1974 at Ebbetts' Field in Denver. I remember the snowflakes in my true love's hair as we walked out and away. My heart and musical soul would never be the same. No one I knew ever listened to them. Great stuff to hear now in the early Autumn of my life. Peace Life Love Light to David Cousins et al.

I probably heard this tune two maybe three times in the 70s. Because the FM ran so many songs in a set, I never knew who did it but I carried this amazing melody and the words "hold on to me I'll hold on to you" in my head for years. Thanks to the Internet in the 90's I finally searched the lyrics and found the Strawbs.
What a beautiful song. It is a prog classic. Thanks!!
It was and will always be an exceptional album, The Strawbs finest work, IMO...a huge part of my youth and top 10 stuff within my own many Prog Rock list of greats.
So good to be able to find this on here.....agree entirely that they never quite got that acclaim that would have been so well deserved.
Wonderful nostalgia- what days they were. Now 54 yrs old, they seem like yesterday as all of those special moments reawaken.
Brilliant, Moving, Timeless - Thank you for posting this masterpiece :)
This song is truly a masterpiece of progressive rock.I saw them when this album had just come out- brilliant!-I'm a songwriter and all of these bands were my teachers!-Thank you for posting this, my Strawbs c.d.is damaged beyond repair!
Saw the Accoustic Strawbs with Rick Wakeman at Brockdish Church, Norfolk, on 30/5/2010. Great night and Autumn was one of the highlights of the night.
I saw the Strawbs perform this song acoustically last year in Leicester. Their musicianship was second to none, and with such beautiful songs as this in their repertoire, They truly are one of the world's finest musical offerings of all time.
Wow. This bought me right back to my brother and I listening to Hero & The Heroine on his 8 Track Tape player! I don't think my kids would even know what an 8 Track Tape was!
Aaah! It almost hurts... it was so good, we were so young, we had something lost to these days: innocence and Strawbs, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple were teh soundtrack of our youth... hundreds of excellent bands the likes of which we'll never hear again.... or is it that autumn's come and hearts grow sore with cold, dark winter's approach? Sing on our heroes and heroines! Sing on forever!
@GeaVox Great post, man.... yeah, it does hurt a bit. But, my 89 year old mom still feels what she felt years ago through music. So, this helps makes me know that what I was many decades ago is a part of who I am today. Peace....
@GeaVox amen to that! Ahhhh lost youth spent sitting in the dark, swaying to the haunting vibes of the incomparable Strawbs, Floyd et al.... Thanks for invoking that memory
@GeaVox It is true. Their music (of all bands) was only one connection point with freedom during comunism era in Czechoslovakia. Petr, Zamberk Czech Republic
@peuretdegout ...but you don't realize how much better vinyl albums sounded back in the day when everybody had 400 watt Marantz or Sherwood or Harmen-Karden receivers and 600 watt Altec-Lansing or Bose Speakers....with those set-ups you didn't so much HEAR the music as FEEL the music..if you can find someone who still haws that kind of set-up at let him show you what i mean..you'll love it

@GeaVox appreciate hearing of others who are still out there enjoying what I have always called "Our Hymns". It has been a good life and fortunately we had the likes of the bands [and many others] to make this journey enjoyable. God bless you GeaVox.
@ecurbesor Thanks Ecu... the loss goes on, as each one of us dies, but the music plays on forever! Some of the youth with sous hearts and minds intact hear and add them to their libraries... there is eternity in that!
@GeaVox Ok, I hear ya.... but first of all, before you give up hope, first listen to Barclay James Harvest (from the 70s and 80s) and then Pendragon, IQ, Porcupine Tree, Twelfth Night, Pallas, Mostly Autumn, Pineapple Thief, Fleet Foxes..... "the likes of which we will never hear again"..... I beg to differ :)
I first heard this song on WNEW in N.Y. At midnight, a sexy voiced DJ who called herself the "nightbird" ( Alison Steele ) used to come on and play dreamy music like this. What a lovely, well crafted tune. Nowadays producers would freak out at a song that didn't follow the two minute , forty-five second format
Until 'Hey Jude' showed up, running seven minutes plus... the same 2:45 format was also the standard for most pop songs. Expanded tracks with more complexity, numerous changes & orchestral arrangements seemed to be largely unique to the late 60s & at least the first half of the 70s. The attention span simply isn't there with most of today's give it to me fast, streaming & iPod generation Y listeners.
@slimshine953 Stange thing to me is that the IPOD should allow for longer tunes to be popular. It doesn't and it's too bad. These tunes allowed the musicians in these group to show their talent, the composers to show their musical skills. It was like a symphonic movement, where you could convey the emotion, not only with words but with the music as well. I listened to the 3 minutes version that only has '' The winter long '' section. Good but not great like this version is.
I was only born in 1975 and only heard this song for the first time about 6 weeks ago. I can't remember the last time I heard a song and loved it right away the way I did when I heard this song for the first time.
From 70 to 75 Cousins and Co were so strong. Prog rock often relies more on virtuousity as opposed to great songwriting. The Strawbs had the best of both worlds and this is a shining example. What a great song. Got to see them on Feb 6 1975. My 18th birthday. These guys could really rock out in concert
Cousins and Co are still going I saw/heard them perform an acoustic version of this wonderful song in Stevenage, England a couple of weeks ago. Truly fantastic!
As I recall, the first part of this song was released as a single in the US, and made it to the lower reaches of the Black Music Chart.based on it's funky introduction.
This was one of my favorites growing up in the 70s. Am I the only one who noticed that Nintendo's Dr. Mario ripped part of the melody from this song? Since you can't post a URL search "Fever: Dr. Mario Music" and listen at :28 seconds. (This would be found at 5:00 minutes the Strawbs video we are viewing)
I call this album cover "the blow dry" album cover. Absolutely LOVE this song, and what a beautiful poem. And, yes, I've experienced them and this song live many times. And David Cousins voice is so good on this song.
Introduced to the strawbs while at school in the 70s. One of the best bands ever. Just a pity the never got the aclaime they so richly deserve. Have seen them performe live many times, and are still worth going to see.
@kw2409 I'm old enough not to remember what year I saw them live. They were the opening act for Kraftwerk. the Strawbs (Strawberry Hill Boys) came on, blew me away with their set, than Kraftwerk came on and I left in the middle of their first song. I have always loved the Strawbs.
Many thanks for posting this! Straws and their many musical friends & incarnations - Fotheringay, Sandy Denny, Rick Wakeman, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior & June Tabor, Ian Matthews...and i know i'm missing some - they put out so much truly excellent and influential music, i think it's a terrible shame that they never receieved due recognition here in the US. Before my time, I have my Mom to thank for turning me on to them. Per chance, could you post "Witchwood"? Again, thanks!
I've always loved this band, but lost a lot of my albums in recent years. This was so great to hear in good quality. Thanks for sharing. I always though Dave Cousins sounded very like Peter Gabriel - a great compliment - and their musicianship deserved far, far greater success.
I have very happy and sad memories when I listen to this beautiful album....it was the first music my husband introduced to me and when he died in the Autumn a couple of years ago I had this particularly haunting track played at his funeral. Many thanks for sharing it with us.
@commahhn I loved them back in the late 70's the melotron isnt something you heard often live, and they played it sweetly. The contrast between the 2 Dave's voices always amazed me ! Lambert actually fell down on stage at Massey hall in Toronto in 74 while doing a guitar solo and laughed his way a la rockstar through it until he stood back up smiling all the way a trooper ! great band in concert !

Wonderful nostalgia- what days they were. Now 54 yrs old, they seem like yesterday as all of those special moments reawaken.
Brilliant, Moving, Timeless - Thank you for posting this masterpiece :)

Fantastic. The Strawbs never cease to amaze me, in both recording and live performances. Cousins is a brilliant song writer.

Long live the Strawbs!

Dave and Dave still sing this beautifully
Hold on to me, I'll hold on to you
The winter long I will always be with you.

I will be the one who will always see you through

Peace....

Ah yes, Allison Steele, and her poetry. First time I heard King Crimson's Court of....took me a few years to find that.
FM was it....until programmers came in and destroyed it.
mus1cat 1 year ago
I first heard this song on WNEW in N.Y. At midnight, a sexy voiced DJ who called herself the "nightbird" ( Alison Steele ) used to come on and play dreamy music like this. What a lovely, well crafted tune. Nowadays producers would freak out at a song that didn't follow the two minute , forty-five second format
atman100 2 years ago
Until 'Hey Jude' showed up, running seven minutes plus... the same 2:45 format was also the standard for most pop songs. Expanded tracks with more complexity, numerous changes & orchestral arrangements seemed to be largely unique to the late 60s & at least the first half of the 70s. The attention span simply isn't there with most of today's give it to me fast, streaming & iPod generation Y listeners.
slimshine953 2 years ago 2

Dufresne416 ,
You're absolutely right.
This IS an absolute masterpiece!
I've loved this since the early '70s. I love how the beginning sounds just like a late autumn storm coming.
And the ending is so lovely.

Have seen the Acoustic Strawbs play this several times, In the Clasic Legends Tour with Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash and Focus.
This is the highlight for me.

despite their excessive oldness??
