This is one of my all-time favorite comedy scenes. In a way I think Jerry Lewis was playing a joke on the audience. He was really the first one to drag a scene on much longer than it should until the audience was first laughing, then uncomfortable, and then the absurdity of the situation going on and on became hysterical again. The cartoon "Family Guy" does has learned this lesson well.
If you get the DVD, the audio commentary with Steve Lawrence interviewing Jerry Lewis is good. Jerry explains a lot of tidbits about this scene and others. Good DVD for the Jerry Lewis fan.
How either of them could keep from laughing. So much of it looked improvised--"That's my eyebrow." One of my top 10 funniest clips of all time. Thankyou for posting this.
@amazmace I was just telling my friend this last night. We were sitting on the couch laughing so hard, and the fact that makes it so funny is that neither of them laugh.
An excellent scene in a sporadically funny comedy. Movie is under-discussed and under-appreciated; plenty of subtle, surreal effects, though seriously flawed: like alot of "Jerry pictures", too long, too many scenes with no payoff, too many lost opportunities. But the man was/is a comic genius.
Mr. Lester always played the tough mobster and when I first saw this at the walk-in I thought he was going to KILL Jerry at the end of the scene. I've always wondered how much he got paid to let Jerry screw him up like that??? He must have gotten a bonus. Thanks for the sacrfice Buddy!
i would love to see the part of the movie when he ballroom dances with the 1930's gangster actor george raft, man that was funny!!!! if you have it, will you post it? thanks anyway for this treasure right here.
at 5:48-5:51 Jerry starts laughing but holds it in pretty good. then again from 6:18 to 6:21 he starts to loose it and they cut. they left it in cuz the rest was perfect
you're right about buddy lester, he is really funny too and this is truly his scene. btw, check out jerry breaking up on 5:38 and 6:15, you can see him from the back cracking up.

My reply-
I agree. And Buddy steals the show by barely doing a thing. A sign of an unselfish comedian. That's hard to find these days.
