  • Thanks for the Tutorial!!!!!! Great Video

  • i still cant do it

  • This will be the dumbest question on Youtube but.... I have watched enough tutorials now on warping that I am fully confident in my ability to do it. I just don't know what it IS. So...what IS it? Lol. I am obviously getting into this to have fun and not make the newest hot production so forgive me if I am oblivious to something so readily apparent to everyone else.

I know I am missing a basic piece of the music making puzzle which is blocking my understanding of warping.. any help welcome!

  • @Sabbatai Warping allows Ableton to creating a 'beatgrid'. This means that the kick lands correctly on a line. This allows a) the song is in perfect tempo, and b) you to correctly 'beatmatch' with another song. If you warp a song incorrectly (that is not accurately/perfectly), it makes beatmatching/creating a bootleg impossible as the kicks are not synced, and your song will have slight tempo fluctuations. Hope this helped! c:

  • Thanks :) still problems with not EDM acaps but in EDM acaps works most of the time :)

  • Thanks for the accapella info....The kick reference really helped...Hip hop accapella vox are still very tricky to warp.

  • ya entiendo es un proceso de escuchar y ajustar hasta q te salga, pense que podria ser aun mas facil, igual no es complicado

  • This video really is brilliant thanks a million!

  • would the complex warp method be better for vocals than the tones one??

  • thanks man :) it didnt work 100% in my case, but it helped me to warp my head around the whole warping thing, thanks a lot keep up a great job. For those who are trying to warp music without obvious beatline - try using EQ to separate only the part of the frequencies you need

  • Thanks for a great tutorial, but I also try to warp a track that HAS NOT a constant tempo (like an MJ track) and it's practicaly impossible with this method. Can you provide a tutorial for THAT scenario?

    Thanks

  • This method makes for a pretty poor and slow method of warping.

  • yeah ok nice video... but try to do this on disco vocals....you go straight to madness...

  • @planetmusicsamos : plz explain why!

  • Swedish??

  • And now I can make mashups:)

  • Thanks. I already new how to warp tracks, but I never used those grey tags before. That will definately speed up my workflow.

  • However, when I them try to move transients to correct small timing issues, when I click them, Ableton is HUGELY expanding the timing board (don't know what this is called- the bit that the waveform is essentially 'nailed' to) meaning that my waveform, instead of occupying the whole board, is now a timy fraction of it, and I'm 56 hours past it.

    V Frustrating. Anyone help?

    Thanks!

  • Still new at this, but me Ableton don't seem to be actin' quite like it should. Read on...

Trying to warp a song. Set initial main marker > right click > set as 1.1.1

    All going well.

    Thanks!

  • you are a fucking fucking fucking god maaan ;D;DDD

  • excellent! thanks! :)

  • Why not try and warp something thats NOT dance or techno how bout something unpredictable like a rock song

  • I have everything down except the warping !!! can see you warping but how to do get the 2 tracks in view at the bottom to match them???

Why does it miss the first second off some tracks? I dont really mix dance music so I like to drop from the start of the track...

  • Thanks so much! I was totally clueless how to warp since it's backwards from Ableton v7.

  • Awesome. This is sooooo helpful thanks so much for being such a legend :D :D Now I don't need to leave tracks out of my mixes that have loads of warp markers haha :P

    Thankyouuuuuuu!

    Tom

  • Hey eevryone, is there anyone who can help me as an Ableton novice..every time i try to record my vocals using a microphone over the top of my ready mde backing track , for some reason it also reocrds the backing track on the new audio microphone track EVEN THO i use earpphones ..plsss help ..cant record vocals at all on finished tracks Stephen x

  • Nice method ;)

    Thanks !!!

Vocals can't be matched in another way...without disabling warp ;)

  • Can you export or save your warped track to use with Traktor or Serato. I mean does it only warp within ableton? I've been dabbling with it and the main use for me would be to solidify my tracks for beat gridding in Traktor, can I do that?

  • EXTREMELY helpful, though I'm trying to warp Robin S. "Show me love" and it's presenting a stiff challenge since she drifts off a lot. =/

  • hey i would like to know how to warp all retro songs and match it,thanks..

  • I have to say this is the best video on warping...so thanks for that. The only thing is, I'm so sick of this music with the beats like that, that I have to say something nasty. Why the fuck is there not one person who realizes how fucking trite and cliche that crap is? Because it's just absolute shit...i'd like to find the faggots who make that music and spit on my hand and slap them silly.

  • Thank you, at least one person doing warping on a song with vocals in the start.

Where can I find a tutorial for R&B and Hip Hop Warping???

  • hey when you move the wave left and right to get it on beat, do you press ( c t r l ) and then move the wave so you don't mess with waves that are before and after the wave that you're moving? because I am wondering when you move the wave do you necessariliy have to put the yellow warp mark under the time or you can just move the wave left and right without putting the yellow warp mark? I know that you gotta put the yellow warp mark in the beginning of the downbeat.

  • The first word doesn't necessarily come in on the 1 beat.

  • what a shit song

  • thanks a lot, i learned how to warp thanks to this video and now can warp pretty much any EDM track. i just have one question when u adjust the wave say on the 17th bar and then adjust on 240th won't the 17th get displaced as well?

  • yes, it might move a tiny bit, and it will move to be even more accurate, assuming the track has constant tempo.

  • @AirbaseOfficial where do you get acapellas for songs you want to remix? and what if the original song is an acapella so there is no music to reference to?

  • @AirbaseOfficial Would you possibly make a tutorial where you warp a track that isn't constant in the tempo? I'm not sure if I've ever come across one, but for instance, I've had problems with Rotunda... when I follow your guide, I get certain bits of the track which sound like they change tempo completely.

  • verrrrrrrry good explanation.

    i almost have it understood.

    thx

  • where do you get acapellas?:)

  • @smicovic Wal-mart has them on sale right now.

  • Very useful :p

Does the "Seg. BPM" on the vocal track need to match the General Tempo of the song at the end of your edit ?

    Thanks

  • @Jetamuz nope, it's just for reference

  • awesome tutorial[s] def subscribing as im still sort of new to ableton ;P

  • a man do you know how to clean vocals ? or in tips or videos for it on live 8

  • me? or airbase lol

  • great...I think you covered the most important point, which is that warping is only the beginning, most important is knowing the original song and where the vocals come in and how they are spoken either on/after/before the beat

would it have made it easier if you put another warp marker on the last word, and then hit warp from here straight on the 1.1.1 warp marker at the beginning of the vocal?

  • what other producer have their youtube channels

  • 7 skies, thrillseekers, leon bolier has a few videos, tenishia, hhmm, thats all I can remember right now.

  • Keep the good work! ;)

  • Thanks! Very useful video.... i needed to see that!! All the best! Sam :)

  • where do get the acapellas do make them or get

from a website PLEASE! post a video response

  • brilliant. ur a great teacher

  • Live is freely downloadable from Abletons website, but you need to buy the licence from them online. Or go to your nearest audio store and pick it up.

  • you pay for it, so the engineers and people at ableton live can work hard to get you great software. simple, right?

  • why is it that everytime i try to drag a pseudo warp marker (grey) it turns yellow (warp marker)? even if im trying not to double click it. any suggestions?

  • You're holding down one or more buttons.

  • THX!!!

  • AirbaseOfficial, Thank you soooo much for the video, at first Ableton 8 freaked me out, kinda wiching I could get my money back, but now I see they really improved the algoritme, I just needed to adapt and you made me adapt waaaaaaay faster! Keep up the good work and I'll be checking out your videos! Cheers mate

  • Hey thanks for the video, i got the demo downloaded and was trying to figure out how to use this software, your vid had me mixing in no time at all!

  • THANKS! d(^_^)b

  • great tutorial

    been a great help

love your productions! keep up the good work and visit us some time @ holland :D

  • Hi Jezper. This question is regarding the first (non-acapella) track that you have warped. I noticed that you have only put in a single warp marker at 1.1.1, and that's it! Does it matter not having any warp markers throughout the rest of the track, as long as you are stretching the audio? Personally I create a warp marker every time I see the beat is off, so that I can have the beat correspond perfectly to the measure. Am I taking it a step too far?

    -Jesse

  • If you know the track is a digital recording (like with trance) you can assume that it has perfect tempo all the way thru. So that only requires a yellow warp marker at the start and then you adjust the gray markers like I show. Putting down yellow markers is only usable if the track you're warping doesn't have perfect tempo (lets say with a rock track). The difference is that the yellow marker will not change the tempo after, only before it.

  • Thanks for the reply Jezper. I just started on my first track yesterday...it's sounding okay so far! I will upload it to youtube at some point and post the link here. Maybe you can tell me what you think? ;)

  • nice tutorial but still not convinced of warping in 8.. they must be crazy to change it in that way - they should worry about other stuff !!

  • hey Jezper or anyone esle =P i have a question, how can i reverse a sample in ableton live?

  • press the Rev button in a sample box

  • damn , sorry for the stupid question lol

  • how did you get the acapella?

  • hey i got a question. when he goes "at the same time" and then the other voice says the same thing but all noticeable and stuff, how do they make it like all noticeable? that could really help me out.

  • i think its soemkind of filter or multiband compression , not sure though

  • you can hear the woman's voice is kind of in the middle of the stereo spectrum and the man's voice is a bit panned to the right and I would say there is also a chorus on it so it sounds more spacy and louder...

  • you can try compressing it, but you'll lose some of the dynamics. another thing to try is setting up a small stereo delay. this effectively throws parts of the signal out of phase and gives an "up front" feel. in ableton, you can do this by putting a "Simple Delay" on the track setting both L&R to "time", drop one of them down to 1ms and the other you want anywhere from around 10ms to 30ms to get the desired effect. always check to make sure it sounds ok in mono though!

  • Excellent tutorial thanks.

  • Excellent! Thanks for another great tutorial!

  • awesome tutorial!! where can you get acapella vocals like you were using? i would love to do something with vocals like that in it.
