I "scammed" Mint cakes off people when they still had a decent street value. I stood in G.E. and picked random 100+ combat people who might have completed "Path of Glouphrie"-quest. I typed their names into Adventurer's log and checked if they had done the quest. Whenever I found someone who had done it, I asked them if they want to get 50k and it'll only take 1min. We used the Spirit tree to go to Poison waste. There I gave them T. toads' legs and they took the Mint cake and gave it to me. Lawl

Th only reason that this item has gone up in price is simply because it is "rare". In my opinion it is completely absurd. i agree with you, Noobletio, that the number of mint cakes is infinite, but then again the path of glouphrie is a hard quest, so not many people have done it. This means that there are many less mint cakes than you think :D but im on your side
