I have to say, I love Judi Dench, but on this one, I prefer Imogen Stubbs' version in the Trevor Nunn film of Twelfth Night, it's so much more fun and interesting!
Both she and Patrick Stewart hark back to a very traditional, actorish kind of declamatory Shakespeare. It's fine, but I prefer actors like Mark Rylance, who can make the elizabethan language sound more sincere, more like actual human speech.
So many positive comments - I feel like something's wrong with me but...........I DID NOT like this performance at all! I feel like she's throwing away a lot of the text and the performance, in general, is missing so much of the humor! This should be comedic......not Hamlet.........From the very first line "I left no ring with her what means this lady" fake - then she stops the dialogue to have a very dramatic and slow acting moment....and then continues. Oh goodness. Stop "acting" already!
@rebeccajoh It's an argument but bear in mind that a) this was not meant to be the Performance of Record and b) Twelfth Night is in fact not entirely a comedy.
